[META][RANT]Can uF stay cool...
as the movie approaches.

Up until a week ago, uF was the one stop shop for all thing Cloverfield, with honourable mentions to CloverfieldClues.com and The Effect.

Recently the number of trolls, gamejacks, fake spoilers, and petty name calling has gone through the roof. I await all the real spoilers with some trepidation.

I'm just wondering if uF can last the next 40 days without devolving into some horrible online Lord of the Flies deal.

Gahhh!!!

Rant over, you may resume the madness.

I would probably mind less if the troll/pointless/trout threads were quickly deleted or locked, but instead every time I check back here it seems like there are ten new ones cluttering up the top of the page. Even the dumb "HAY I SAW THE MOVIES GAUYZ IT WAS GOOD LOL!!!" or, "HEY I THINK I FOUND THE MONSTER *obligatory whale monster pic*" shit tends to rack up enough replies to keep it drifting at the top for several hours.

DO NOT WANT.

I'm grouchy, but it doesn't take more than a few minutes to scan over the threads titled READ THIS BEFORE POSTING, etc. The internet may not be srs business, but it's getting pretty obnoxious and we're still over a month out.

EDIT: Found this up in the aforementioned READ THIS thread: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting

A++

*Grabs conch shell* i do aagree that we should start locking the obvious game jacks and 8 million versions of the "monster pic." to be honest i doubt any new site will come up, the ones we have will be flushed out more completely and then teh movie will come out then we get a website recapping it all. which would be nice. i think we all ust need to take a deep breathe and relax. (i am guilty to being an ass on here too and for that i am sorry. thank you for putting me back in check)

I don't mean this to sound insulting in any way, but is the site understaffed?

The mods are just trying to generate an environment that's conducive to free-thinking and doesn't scare newbs. Locking and deleting threads would scare new users away from posting info that they are unsure of, and even though Trout isn't exactly an insult, I'd still feel a little bit worse for the wear if I got slapped with one of those, and the first thread I wrote got locked and deleted. That'd probably turn me off of starting new threads for a while. Also, the mods frankly expect us to act more mature, so that if we respond to trout or troll posts, it's only to post relevant information debunking said post, or clarifying its nature in a clear and well-though-out way. Obvious trolls should be off-limits though.

The fact is, we (and by we, I mean me) haven't exactly been the most mature with our posts. Posting lol in response to a suspected troll is not conducive to argument. Such a post should also explain why said thread is so lol-able. Insults are unnecessary, as funny as they are at times, unless (again), one explains why said poster is an asshead (...this unfortunate medical condition ultimately causes the patient's face to turn into an anus).

Generally speaking, I think we've actually been doing pretty well with most stuff. The only problem is that people are just a little too eager to post in troll threads, so our more important threads get pushed down. Would it be too much to ask that everyone who posts in a troll thread also post in two or more actually important threads, so as to keep them alive and above all the trolling-stomping action?

If someone made me a mod, I'd keep this forum in tip-top shape.

Someone obviously doesn't know how to use the LOCK or DELETE button.

While I am not a mod in this particular sub-forum, I am a mod here at UF. We do not delete posts, we may edit offensive content, but in general, we do not delete posts - admin policy & that's all i have to say about that.

This sub-forum has taken on a life of it's own & grown like a hydra on steroids. one day can equal 2 full new posts pages. That's a lot of time for volunteer workers to spend on just one sub-forum. most of us cover more than 1 area of the boards.

those of you participating in this forum that would like to see it have a bit more control can help the moderators by brining to their attention spam posts, rather than replying to troll posts, let one of the moderators know about it - you can easily pm your forum moderators by clicking on their names under the thread title, send them the direct link to the posts in question - you get that by clicking on that little yellow piece of paper with a folded down corner that is found at the bottom of every post, and then, ignore the trolls.

Feeding trolls only encourages them! Please don't feed the trolls!!! Cool

Threads can be locked & it will happen faster if those of you who care about this part of uF help us out by being proactive. Please remember to be nice to the new visitors, and be sure that you are dealing with a troll and not simply a n00b. IF it's a n00b, take a moment to guide them to a more pertinent thread & please, do it nicely.

I can promise you that we here at uF are looking forward to the movie's release, because, frankly, once it releases, the interest & spec will die down & maybe the folks who are here only for Cloverfield will find somewhere else to play - sorry if that sounds harsh, but you really should see what it looks like from our side of the fence.

/rant

We now return you to your regular programming Smile

Yeah, that pretty much sounds like 'you people that found this because of Cloverfield are not welcome'.

So please, tell us you want us to leave, delete the forum, and be done with it.

Great points
But probably from the 'Golden age'

I reckon Redhats alright. I mean the site was here and only known by a few hardcore ARG players. Cloverfield comes out and all this new traffic is rushing here from youtube, imdb, cloverfieldclues, 84-hours.net and bringing all the trimmings of a popular online site without the serious aspect they had before.

If I were here prior to July I'd probably be used to the level of traffic and deal with it accordingly. However, I don't think ARG/ARE are stopping anytime soon Redhat, so you can probably expect all the people here to refer to this place in the future for any and all content that can enrich a movie/game/other medias effectiveness (I've already been through the CF section for the Dark Knight stuff)

So I don't think it's going to calm down after Cloverfield, quite the opposite.

It saddens me a little, because I've been a part of a site and have had fond memories from it, then something changes and it's gone or warped forever. But them's the apples - like it or not.

The moderators aren't nearly strict enough here. The 'friendly' atmosphere worked before, sure, but now that morons have broken the gates they need to be a lot less lenient, at least in this forum.

I suggest locking all repeat topics and letting them die. That way threads that actually have useful content can be toward the top of the forum, as opposed to 3 "OMG WHAT'S IN JAMIE'S BOX" threads or 5 "OMG LEAKED PICTURE OF THE MONSTER YOU GUYS HAVE SEEN 1000 TIMES!!"

And if the moderators are so overwhelmed by the amount of forums at UF, I suggest we have Cloverfield-dedicated moderators.

Moderation is something of an art. I think this forum has achieved a nice balance. I'd hate to see the standards changed in reaction to a sudden influx of new posters. The old, purist unfictioners probably don't like this subforum, but rest assured the site owners love it. Cloverfield has put unfiction on the map. Make no mistake.

As important as moderators are, the secret to a great forum isn't a secret at all. It all hinges on the maturity of its members. We all know, for example, that replying to an unwelcome post is counterproductive. But that doesn't stop many who know better. So if the forum goes to s**t, the blame will lay squarely with those of us who talk the talk, but are too weak to walk the walk (read: ignore the trolls).

p.s. this meta stuff is the beginning of the end and by entertaining it, I'm not walking the walk. So, last post on the topic. Peace.
