[SCC] Terminator: Story so far
Take back the Future! EniTech / Dyson Trust / Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles

Ok, because we're now in CFwP, and quite a lot (a LOT) has happened since the initial rabbithole, I will attempt here to write a story so far, for people to get caught up. It's a relative summary of the wiki Timeline.

- For a shorter paraphrase (rather than this timeline breakdown) see the post below this one.

- Also see the third reply below for an outline of the movie timelines compared to the TV show (since there's debate as to how Terminator 3's events affect the overall timeline of the franchise)

* Rabbithole 1/2 - takebackthefuture.com

* InsaneFox first noticed a strange Terminator-esque ad on TV, which included the reference to Takebackthefuture.com. On the website was a large slow-moving countdown that was quickly determined to be counting days.

* While the countdown..counted, audio clips were occasionally heard saying lines such as:
Quote:
"Listen to me. Skynet - it's happening again"
"This is real. They will take over. We're all in danger - my mom's not crazy."

* Rabbithole 2/2 - enitechlabs.com

* Via youtube, various people came across a video post from a company called EniTech Research Laboratories which seemed to be revealing the team had developed technology to take "pictures" of the future (video), using the theoretical tachyon particle.
dictionary.com wrote:
n. A hypothetical subatomic particle that always travels faster than the speed of light.

* Wikipedia on tachyons.
* In short: because the tachyon travels faster than light, it's theorized that it travels backwards through time, rather than forwards. Due to this physical property, when the tachyon camera takes a photo, the photo must be processed (taking up to 17 hours in some cases) to depict the tachyons captured. In effect, the image formed is actually an image from the future, determined by Enitech to be approximately 1193 days (the estimate has since been refined) forward in time.

* Enitech's website contains detailed information about their research team and this project they've revealed to the public called "The Gardner Project". "Gardner" refers to Martin Gardner, who depicted the 'Tachyon telephone' paradox in his book Aha! Gotcha - Aha! Insight.

* Enitech's staff consists of a number of scientists (link) - mainly:
Frank Bentley: Chief Research Engineer
Anna Kies: Senior Manager Special Projects
Mike Shelton: Lead Research Associate
Jacob Gustar: Advanced Research Coordinator
Kevin Altair: Senior Engineering Manager

* Enitech also maintains a blog (link) which has been active since June 15, 2007 (their first entry), and which has become their main tool for presenting information and data to the public, as well as being used for public interaction (via comments).

* Enitech's blog - catch up

* Enitech has logged a number of entries since their team's inception. Most notable entries describe...

(August 28, 2007 - link)
Frank makes notes of the Facebook group he created (link) for X-Cyberdyne employees (this is the first official link to the Terminator franchise) - we find out that Frank used to work at Cyberdyne before it was destroyed (ala Terminator 2)
(September 12, 2007 - link)
Anna gives some background on the project name
(November 20, 2007 - link)
Frank explains why they're being open about this project, now bringing it to the public.
(December 23, 24, Jan 3)
Anna posts a few photos from the camera, examining the before/after processing (original photo from today / resulting tachyon photo depicting approx 3 years in the future)
(January 6, 2008 - link)
Frank posts their first public video hosted on youtube (link) asking for public opinion and ideas of what to take photos of. He also explains the "observer effect" (wikipedia) (in short: the idea that as soon as you have knowledge of an event from the future, the event's occurance is affected and thus the discovery is, at best, no longer an accurate view of the future, and at worst may produce a paradox)

* Community involvement begins

(January 9, 2008)

* Two blog posts discuss photo subject ideas proposed by the public, such as: A newspaper stand, a public clock or date item, a mirror (the camera itself), and more.

(January 10, 2008)

* A person by the name of "Zoltan Gerts" posts in the Facebook about his father who worked at Cyberdyne for 11 years, and the subsequent tearing apart of their family. Zoltan's father hasn't been heard from since. It's unconfirmed as to whether Zoltan's post is to be considered "in-game", though Zoltan himself appears to be a real person (with suspicious links to a marketing firm). Frank, however, quotes his comment in Enitech's blog.

* Anna posts the results of one of the public suggestions - take a picture of a person, organize for them to appear in the same location at the estimated future time/date, and see how they look. They took a picture of Jacob Gustar with a regular camera, then with the tachyon camera. The future photo shows the wall, but no Jacob (blog link)

(January 11, 2008)

* Responding to another public suggestion, Enitech took a before/after picture of the San Francisco Bay and skyline. The result astounded and alerted Enitech to the apparent city-wide disaster that looks to occur in approximately 1191 days. (blog link)

(January 12, 2008)

* Two more public suggestions are tested in the second public video blog (blog link). A photo of a newsstand reveals a future San Francisco Chronicle newspaper with headlines: "CDC Closes Hospitals", "Quarantine compromised", "Sunny forecast for solar power from self-healing cells". Another photo was taken with the camera pointed at itself in a mirror - revealing nothing but static.

* Takebackthefuture.com is updated, and now shows a red eye, which when clicked fades in a map of the world. The map changes showing the timeline of events from what can be assumed to be "Judgement Day" (Skynet's self-awareness) through its effective take-over of the planet at 3 billion population (while humans are reduced to 47 million). Near the beginning are a few red radar blips, followed by a virus-like outbreak covering the globe, while blue population dots are replaced by red. Near the end, three blue radar blips appear (likely human survivor fortifications) in southern Mexico, northern Colombia, and Israel. The countdown then reappears after a mancing appearance of a Terminator skull.

(January 13, 2008)

* Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles episode 1 airs on Fox.

(January 14, 2008)

* Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles episode 2 airs on Fox.

* Frank posts a new comment in his Facebook group responding to numerous requests for information about Cyberdyne.
Frank Bentley wrote:
Lately I've been getting quite a few messages looking for information about Cyberdyne Systems. To everyone contacting me looking for information...

The company is gone. They haven't been around for years. Unforunately they were ruined by the attack in 1991.

If you're still interested in that type of work then I would suggest you should check out the non-profit trust setup in my late friend's memory. Though it's not the same type company, they do have similar cutting edge research projects.

* Dyson Trust is discovered after much digging and looking through potential domains and websites. Dyson Trust was created in 1997 in memory of Miles Dyson (killed in the events of Terminator 2), honouring his memory by reviewing and providing grants for scientific projects once a year. Enitech is listed as their current project circa 2007.
* Dysontrust.org also has a Secure section that is restricted to the project team and requires a login to access.

* Mike posts a photo of Anna at her workstation (blog link), obviously worried and concerned about the future, now that they've uncovered what appears to be proof of a major catastrophe that befalls San Francisco. On closer inspection, we find a strange piece of paper against the window with letters and numbers in a hexagonal shape (a puzzle to solve).

(January 16, 2008)

* Enitech announces their partnership with Dyson Trust

* Another tachyon photo is posted (blog link), this time a before/after of a nearby neighborhood in San Francisco. In the future photo, we see an enormous machine clutching a school bus amongst a destroyed neighborhood.

(January 17, 2008)

* Anna posts a video blog, obviously still bothered abotu the future, but now also about the fact that everyone's going nuts over the photo that Mike posted of her, and she firmly tells us to stop it. It's noticed in the background however, that there's a whiteboard with a number of seemingly scientific scribblings. These scribblings eventually lead to the solution for the hexagon puzzle from Anna's workstation photo.
* View the full explanation of the puzzle and it's solution here

(January 18, 2008)

* The secure page on Dyson Trust's website is hacked - the solution to the hex puzzle at Anna's workstation is her login and password to this section.
* Within the secure section are a number of documents revealing a wealth of information about Dyson and Enitech - a rejection letter for a previous proposal called the "Centurion" project, and a letter outlining the origin of the tachyon device and project.
* The latter document reveals that a small device was discovered with a note directing the finder to contact Enitech, which at the time did not yet exist. They went to Dyson Trust for help, who eventually green-lighted the Enitech team from Dr. Frank Bentley, who took the device and researched it, eventually producing the now public tachyon camera as the product of their research. Along with the initial camera (a modified Canon PowerShot S100), they were given four "punchcards", the meanings of which were unknown.
(as of this writing, the secure section is once again secure - for an archive of what was previously found, visit the wiki archive)

* Mike posts a new blog entry revealing more tachyon photos Enitech has processed (blog link)

* Having discovered that her login to Dyson's secure site has been hacked, Anna decides to go public with the contents of the secure section. She records a new video from location of the first camera's discovery, explaining the punchcards in person, and that they believe there are four more cameras hidden around the United States - the punchcards holding the keys to their locations.
* The video is cut short however, when they notice a dark figure approaching in the distance. They flee to their car in a way that indicate they're being chased. In the car, we see Anna trying to start the engine frantically, when suddenly the hooded and masked figure appears at her door trying to break in - we briefly see a glow of red eyes inside a pair of goggles before the team escapes the scene.

(January 21, 2008)

* Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles episode 3 airs on Fox.

* Mike posts a higher resolution capture of the figure from their latest video blog as he approached from the distance (blog link). It's clear at this point that the figure's appearance matches that of the Terminator "Chromartie" from the TV show - the evil Terminator out to find and kill John Connor (who also incidentally shows signs of a 'smarter' AI than previous Terminators who would solely be out to cause destruction and chaos in their singular goal of finding and killing John Connor - this Terminator seems more reserved and arguably 'smarter').
- Side note: Chromartie in the TV show began wearing the hood, mask, and goggles to mask his appearance having survived and calmly left the scene of a firey explosion.

* Enitech receives a message from someone claiming to be "a member of the Resistance".
Resistance wrote:

You have the pad so here are the first 2 device locations.

* Along with the four punchcards, this message forms the second puzzle to solve.

* The puzzle was quickly solved, revealing the locations of the first two cameras with two of the punchcards (for the solution process see the previous link). The remaining two punchcards have yet to be put to use.

(January 22, 2008)

* vpisteve took it on himself to visit the location of one package - in Granada Hills, LA. Twice. On his second visit, he (and his daughter) found the package. It was a thermos containing a Canon PowerShot S100 (with the back removed so-as to look modified, or just to fit in the thermos), a battery charger, a USB cable, a 32MB CF memory card, and a multi-survival tool. The memory card was scoured, but no files were found, and no other messages were in the package.

* The second package, located at a store in New York City, was reportedly picked up by a person named "Bill". Soon after, "Zoltan Gerts" posted again in the facebook group saying that he'd been contacted by a person naming himself Bill, wearing a hood and mask and goggles (*gasp!*) who said he knew Zoltan's father. Bill gave Zoltan the package, mentioned the resistance and something about 'preventing someone from compromising the integrity of the code', and the instructions: face north, take a photograph, conact enitech.

wiki link for package photos/descriptions

(January 23, 2008)

* Frank posts an update recapping all the package discoveries so far, seemingly to verify the existence of "Bill" and legitimacy of Zoltan. Steve has a camera, and Zoltan now has a camera.

* Steve receives a message from a flickr account named "The Resistance" (link), warning him to keep alert. He replied, to which he received instructions to find the Security Trust of Los Angeles, and take a picture of Box A117 inside the bank vault, then send the photos GPS coordinates, and give the photo to Enitech for processing.
(side note, episode 1 spoilers: The Security Trust of Los Angeles is the bank that Sarah, John and Cameron were led to, where they eventually teleported to 2007, after Cameron built a time displacement machine with components hidden among various vault boxes - Box A117 holding the keys to the rest; it was also registered to an "E. Boykins", known as "The Engineer" to Cameron - another resistance member sent to 1963, employed at the bank, who prepared the components for them)

(January 24, 2008)

* Steve gets a photo of the bank (it is in fact the same one from the tv show), but is unable to photograph inside the vault. He takes a picture of the outer wall nearest the vault. He responds to the Resistance and submits the photos to Enitech for processing.

* A new photo appearas on the flickr account - a collage of newspapers reporting on various robot advancements around the world. The central article, however, is edited to show a block of two-digit numbers ranging from 0-5. (flickr link)

(January 25, 2008)

* A new video blog is posted, where the Enitech team states their concern for the future and that they're taking precautions to protect all the data they receive in relation to this project - photos, information, etc - in a very safe vaulted location in case it may be useful to any survivors.
* Throughout this video are discovered a number of hidden frames wiki link).
1) One directs us to a method for contacting the Resistance (email takebackthefutureSPLATgmail.com).
2) One frame boldly states "The Turk is not dead"
(side note, episode 3 spoilers: The Turk was the name of a chess-playing AI robot developed by Andy Goode which was supposedly destroyed by Sarah at the end)
3) One is a portion of a crime scene photograph hinting at the name "Jacob Gustar"

* A message to Enitech asking about Jacob says he's alive and well, sitting with them right now.

* On emailing the Resistance email, a response is sent containing a second number-pair paragraph. These two number pair blocks are found to be the second part of the punchcard puzzle

* Another email to the Resistance asking for more information about Jacob's death prompts a reply containing the full photo and details seen in the hidden frame (wiki link) - the crime, however, is dated April 11, 2008. This explains why Jacob didn't appear in the future-photo test against the wall that Enitech tried January 10th.

* A second blog post is made revealing the results of Enitech's processing of Steve's vault picture. The bank is reduced to rubble, and there's a large plaque on the wall with the label "RESIST" and a symbol. They're also in the process of developing Zoltan's photo from New York. (blog link)

(January 27, 2008)

* Catherwood reverse-engineers the number puzzles (after everyone's everyone's essentially ripped the puzzle to shreds trying to solve it), and determines the solution, and the path to get there from the punchcards and number pairs (full puzzle solve). The locations of the final two resistance packages are determined - near Austin TX, and in Orlando FL.

(January 28, 2008)

* A new blog post reveals the processing done on Zoltan's photo from New York. Zoltan was instructed by Bill to face north at a specific location and take the photo. The result includes another RESIST and symbol plaque. (blog link)

Semi-enshortenated Paraphrased Timeline

Enitech and Gardner

EniTech Labs created a website to bring their latest research: The Gardner Project to the public. Their research has developed a 'tachyon camera' - a camera that takes pictures of future. A video blog on youtube raised a ruckus from people calling it fake, a hoax - but we knew better. An early blog post on their site Enitechlabs.com referenced Cyberdyne, linking it to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show on Fox, which has an extended reality / viral site Takebackthefuture.com.

The tachyon camera produces pictures of tachyons (theoretical particles that travel backwards through time), photos estimated to be about 1193 days to the future, also the number the counter of TBTF.com seems to be counting to. January 13 saw the premiere of the TV show - and the day the counter read 1193.

Pictures revealed so far by Enitech show a chaotic, destroyed future San Francisco, including newspaper headlines claiming viral outbreaks, hospitals closing, and more. We even see an image of an enormous machine clutching a school bus.

Miles Dyson: In memoriam

People asking Frank Bentley, the Enitech team lead, about Cyberdyne via his "Ex-Cyberdyne employees" facebook group, are prompted to look for what we now know as the Dyson Trust - a group set up in memory of Miles Dyson (killed in T2) to offer grants and funds to proposed scientific projects, once a year. Its history is this: After turning down a project named "Centurion", they approved another based around the discovery of a curious device (a small modified camera). The project was approved, and Enitech Research was formed, led by Frank. Their research eventually produced the tachyon camera.

DysonTrust.org has a secure section, and through a badly placed self-reminder note (for login and password) of team member Anna Kies at her workstation (it's seen in a photograph posted to Enitech's blog by coworker Mike), the community hacked into Dyson's secure section and retrieved two historical documents related to the Gardner Project (info about the Centurion project rejection, and origin of the Gardner Project and Enitech). We also learn that along with the original camera Enitech received were four punchcards they believed held the locations of 4 other similar cameras hidden around the US.

Red eye

With this private info now public, Anna records a video at the location their original camera was discovered, and tells us more about the punchcards. They're rudely interrupted however, when a dark figure is seen approaching from the distance. Anna (and Mike, assumedly) flee the scene, just barely escaping the masked/hooded/goggled/red-eyed figure. This person has the same appearance as the bad Terminator from the most recent episode of TSCC.

Enitech soon after receives a message from "a member of the Resistance" containing two encrypted paragraphs. They're quickly decoded by the community using the punchcards as keys (song chords, where the Pink Floyd song lyrics were keys to the encrypted vigenere texts accordingly). Two locations are discovered: One in LA, and one in NY.

Firing canons

Vpisteve manages to recover the LA resistance package, containing a Canon Powershot S100 and a number of survival-ish items. The NY package is reportedly retrieved by "Bill", who no one hears from... until "Zoltan Gerts" posts in the facebook group that Bill approached him and gave him the camera (convenient!) stating he knew Zoltan's father (an ex-cyberdyne employee who went missing years ago). Bill, strangely, also is described as having the same appearance as the menacing figure from the video, and as teh bad guy from TSCC - however, this one seems to indicate he's working for the Resistance.

Vpisteve receives a message from "The Resistance" via his Flickr account, with instructions for taking a photo with the camera - of Box A117 at Security Trust of Los Angeles (the same bank from episode 1, and the significant box also seen in the TV show). Restricted from photographing inside the bank's vault, Steve nabs a shot of the nearest wall to the vault of the outside of the bank, and submits it to Enitech.

Resistance isn't futile

A new image is added to The Resistance's Flickr account of a bunch of robot-related news articles and contains a number puzzle. It's analyzed out the wazoo, an no one can decode it. Yet.

A new video blog secretly gives a method to contact the resistance via 'hidden' frames: an email address. We're also told "The Turk" (a chess-playing robot from episode 3) is not dead. We also find a photo of a murder - of Enitech team member Jacob Gustar. (earlier, one of the photo tests Enitech did was to take a picture of him against a wall, plan for him to be there in ~1193 days, and see what he looks like - he's missing from the future photo - now we know why).

Hexed

Steve's vault photo submitted to Enitech is processed and reveals only rubble - but there's a big plaque with the label "RESIST" and a strange triangular symbol (like Anna's reminder note, a symbols which could form a hexagon if 6 are placed together), hanging on the building's remains. Shortly thereafter, Zoltan's photo from NY is also revealed, capturing a startling moment in time of what appears to be a large gun being fired with its muzzle flash, but in the foreground is none other than another "RESIST" and symbol pair (this symbol is different than the first).

An auto-reply is received from the Resistance by anyone who emails them containing another paragraph of number pairs (as seen in the flickr image). Working backwards, Catherwood cracks the code (both of them), again paired with the punchcards' lyrics as keys, and the final two camera locations are revealed: One in Austin Texas and one in Orlando Florida.

The hunt part 2

Rosekitty bravely finds the Austin package at 6am January 29. The Orlando package is still undiscovered.

...Welcome to the now!

Background timeline based on the movies

I found a nicely pieced together timeline of events from previous movies and how they relate to the TV show on another forum (posted here) which I think works and is nicely concise. General rumour is that the TV show 'doesn't recognize' the events of Terminator 3, but that may simply mean it's in an alternate timeline that 'didn't happen' due to events that have since occurred changing its history (and thus producing the events we now see in TSCC).

Here's his breakdown (and a bit of clarification):

Quote:
After being delayed in T2, Judgment Day occurs in 2004. With a basic army already supplied and more modern technology, Skynet makes accelerated progress in taking a majority of the planet ,and develops the time machine two years earlier circa 2027. Skynet returns to its original plan, dispatching a Terminator to 1999. Tech-Com successfully seizes the machine for a brief period and dispatches an engineer to 1963. The ripple effect eventually leads to Sarah's cancer remaining dormant. The resistance sends units to 1999 and 2007 before Skynet regains control.

Timeline 1:

-1997: Skynet Defense Network goes online, and triggers a nuclear war, leaving 3 billion dead.
-2029: Skynet sends two Terminators to 1984 and 1995 to effectively eliminate John Connor. Tech-Com sends Kyle Reese and a reprogrammed T-800 (movie T1) resulting in...

Timeline 2:

-1984: Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese successfully defeat the T-800.
-1985: John Connor is born.
-1995: The T-1000 is destroyed by the Connors and the T-800. All current Skynet research is destroyed. (movie T2)
-1997: Sarah Connor dies of leukemia.
-2004: Robert Brewster and CRS activate the Skynet Defense Network, triggering the events of Judgment Day (movie T3).
-(2032): Skynet sends the T-X to 2004. The following events shorten the war to 2027.
-2027: Skynet completes its time machine and dispatches a Terminator to 1999 (TSCC). Tech-Com sends its own, plus a technician to 1963 resulting in...

Timeline 3:

-1963: The Tech-Com technician uses future knowledge to construct a time machine in the Security Trust of Los Angeles' bank vault.
-1984: Events of T1 happen as originally.
-1995: Events of T2. Sarah Connor shows no signs of illness in the following period (possibly due to something 'The Engineer' did? This may also affect Brewster and CRS' triggering of Skynet in T3, as John would still be with Sarah, and leading events would play out differently).
-1999: 'Cromartie' attempts to terminate John Connor, but the plan is thwarted by the reprogrammed Terminator (Cameron). The Connors and the Terminator travel to 2007.
-2007: *current*

I'm wondering if they changed timing in the DVD releases, because I just watched T2 - the 'extreme' edition - and it's got the scene with John Connor at the beginning set in 2029. It's implicit that's when the two Terminators are sent back for the events of that movie.

Something that has occurred to me about this whole timeline matter is that before John Connor sends back Kyle Reese, SkyNet had to be created and Judgement Day had to play out. This means that eventually, a neural networked CPU that leads to an emergent sentient AI has to happen. The only thing shifting these events in any way is the people in the future trying to mess with the past. The end result according to most time paradox issues is that they should eventually self-nullify and history will precede as it originally did. It would seem this is still likely, given that the same basic events always arise. I actually haven't seen T3 yet, but the grandest irony I see so far is that in T2 they accelerated the eventual creation of the AI. My suspicion is that we are going to eventually be led to the 'destined' creators of the AI and the original - and effectively true - course of events.
