[Spoiler] My problem with the "discrepancy"
it doesn't make sense

I have not seen this pointed out yet. My main problem with the

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
date of may 22 or so is that there is absolutely no reason in the film to direct any character to say the date, or to show it at all. Even if the film was always intended to be in May, and the ARG made everyone think it was January, they still could have gone back and quickly edited the few times a date is mentioned.

Let the audience just assume the date, it's not like it matters when giant monster is devouring the city. Other than temperature, it is likely kinda cold on a january night, who cares. Obviously people are just gonna run like heck, and not go to the coat-check to retrieve their coats.

If they never mention the date, then there is no discrepancy. Only a few moviegoers who will assume it takes place in January and complain that the characters weren't cold enough

well in the actual movie there is no temp on the news cast. the teaser trailer had a temp on it but the teaser was shot back in may just for the teaser. the actual movie was filmed again. if you compare the scenes from the teaser and the widget they are different in background and clothing. plus look at the news cast... same lady everything else is different, and no temp.

Is there anything obviously spring in the parts that are flashbacks to Ron and Beth's "perfect day"? Do they talk about spring or is it an exceptionally nice day?

IT could be that the ARG will continue through to May, and that the story will continue until then. Except that after the 18th we will be on the 'inside' of the story so to speak.

That's another thing. Why not label that scene as 'several months ago', there is no need to say "four months ago" and have it a perfect spring day. Or just label it 'last spring'. Or, don't label it at all, and let us figure out that it is a flashback (play some 'flashback music' or something).

It's not like there was a critical plot element related to the amount of time elapsed. (of course, I haven't seen the movie, so who knows).

It is just very weird that they have the character state the date at the end of the movie in the speech (as LC person had stated). I also assume they have some date stamps on video playback or something as well, and all those things are really irrelevant to the movie. If they remove all hints as to the calendar date, the viewers would not even notice. That's all i'm saying.

One of the reasons I was a big fan of "The Blair Witch Project" was the way it was marketed, with the Missing posters and the website and the special that aired on the Sci-Fi channel... all of it played into the idea of the events being real, that this was found footage and edited together to try and understand what happened to these three people. That was a great viral marketing campaign, so much so that people actually believed they were watching real events. Even if not, that viral marketing served to make "TPWB" one of the most profitable (if not THE most profitable) film of all time.

"Cloverfield" has botched the marketing substantially if in the film the dates don't match up the the ARE/VMC whichever it is. If they don't line up, this whole ARE/VMC can be summed up in one word: FAIL

Quite a few things, robclov. We've been lead on, like blind shoggoths, only to find the conclusion just as baffling as the clues themselves. It just doesn't work. May is wrong. It should be January.

Thank you Great Old One, nobody has said it quite as clearly and concisely.

It's perfectly obvious why the film can not take place in January.
If all the people who supposed saw the film before tonight had said something this would have been cleared up.

All the "flashback" scenes of Rob and Beth are them talking about and going to Coney Island and riding the rides.
The rides aren't open in January, it would look ridiculous to date it as January. Nobody goes to Coney island in January unless they live there.
The "flashbacks" are a large part of the film, they were not going to reshoot them just to fit the ARE and the movie would have been less than an hour without them. Besides they are a major portion of the plot.

So, the dates in the ARE are meaningless, they just couldn't be bothered to make them match the film.
