It's really, really hard to compare this to Godzilla. They are so diverse and different. It's difficult to say whether or not this will go on to be a legend, or not. It depends how the producers carry it from here.

In my opinion, this is a hell of a lot better then Godzilla. It's more fast paced, scarier, and downright intense.

I have a feeling that it will carry its legacy the distance. Whether it has a sequel, cartoon, mini-series, webisodes or not. The movie hasn't even been released and it already has taken it's place as a pop-culture icon.

i probably wouldn't go that far. godzilla is in a class of his own. kinda like babe ruth is to baseball, his records now seem minor compared to today's stats but he started it all and brought something more to the sport over time. he is a legend, same with godzilla. overtime he set a standard and eventhough if compared to more modern movies seems minor.he is still popular though because, well he is godzilla. cloverfield has a way to go, but honestly i think it is a GOOD start.

Cool pic Slusho! Very nice job on that indeed. I like that better than the other ones. The only drawback is that looks like Venom. I think someone said the back feet had 4 toes, two on the front of the foot and two on the back.

Ah, I hadn't found anything about the toes, thanks.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but by all description this is not an American Godzila. Or at least not yet.

Godzilla had a storyline. We knew what created it, where it came from, where it went, its strengths and weaknesses, its adversaries, etc...

If you look at this monster based on the movie alone, you don't know squat about it.

I'm fearful that this might go the way of Blair Witch: first movie was innovative (I didn't like it, but still), but then they attempted to try to explain things in the sequel and failed miserably. Sometimes *not* explaining things is a good thing; mystery is sometimes healthy and fulfilling.

If it wasn't for mystery, would Lost have gone as far as it has?

Anyone(SlushoAddict?) want to line up the new design pictures with the monster moving between two buildings shot to see what we were looking at all this time.

Did you watch J.J.'s speech at the TED Conference posted on cloverfieldclues.com? he speaks about the "mystery" of the things he does and likes. It really explains why he does things the way he does.

First post here, as I've been an on-and-off reader of these forums, but I feel I must comment on the MGP art designs as I have known what he looks like for quite some time now.

Some of you will think I'm lying, but basically back in November I brought up the subject of Cloverfield to two of my friends, and to my complete surprise I found out that they are involved with MGP (they do NOT work for Paramount). They opened up their work email accounts and showed me a computer generated portrait of MGP.

And from what I've seen posted in this thread, the pictures have been quite accurate. If you combine Slusho Addict's conception with the crude (but accurate) pencil drawing that is the first link in this thread, you pretty much have our monster.

The key features I remember from the picture I saw are this:
- My initial impression when I first laid eyes on MGP was that it reminded me a lot of a Rancor from Star Wars. It's face was just as ugly as a Rancor's, though slightly different. In fact, my friends said he was known as "Mr. Ugly" back at their business. I do not remember seeing any reddish lungs on the side of the head, as sadly the head is what I remember least.
- Brownish-gray skin that looked slimy/wet as it reflected light off of it
- Extremely long arms with long fingers - with those arms MGP would have no problem throwing the SoL head many, many blocks. As mentioned, these arms seemed to have an odd angle in the way they were bent.
- Large, muscular legs
- A simian-like gait. I described him to some of my friends as "a lean, monkey-like rancor with long arms"
- A growth coming out of its chest. From the images they sort of resemble vestigal claws. From what I remember seeing, it looked as if something (a new monster?) were growing out of MGP butt-first. My friends did not know what it was, as even in their circle is was a closely-shrouded secret.
- I do not remember much about a tail, but most likely it was largely hidden behinds the main body in the picture

And here are some more tidbits about Mr. Ugly (as I call him) that I was made privvy to:
- Global warming is what stirs him up from the ocean; however, as you may notice, there are hardly any aquatic features on him.
- Our monster is merely a child, or a "teenageer". It's is not a full grown adult yet, and there are others of its kind, even a mother
- It's height easily matches and surpasses msome skyscrapers (this is should be painfully obvious)

I cannot say for certain that the tidbits I just listed are truly factual, as I am just going off the word of my friends. But regardless, I saw what I saw. You may ask why I am now just saying this - I promised my friends that I wouldn't go spill the beans to everyone I knew, for their sake. Plus, I enjoyed seeing everyone speculate on what our monster looked like and I didn't want to ruin it for everyone so far out from the movie release.

That's all for now, and by this point a lot of what I just posted isn't anything new. I'm surprised at myself for holding out as long as I could on revealing this. Enjoy.
