Oh, I had also enjoyed the game, althought it was partially local (not reachable for me geographically). The German contents were interesting...

But people, who knows? Is it really the end?
Perhaps it's just beginning?

I mean, look at reason #1.

Quote:
Reason #1. For some reason a few people called the cops thinking it was a real thing and not a game....

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
What if the game begins there, where it ends? I mean, this plot would be pretty cool: some people want to do an ARG, they play and enjoy it, but the game crushes, they get problems with "people called the cops", and perhaps - with the real Junker corp.? (Game in game, or other said: the game is out of control like in "Faucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco?)

Possible, but i doubt it. I notice a number of the websites and resources have been "shut down by request of the creator".

Still, would make a cool storyline...

Or shut down by The Man (being the over-powerful idiots at the collage or the cops that overreact all the time) Smile

Even I've got that message:
Quote:

No Name <conspiracy08>
Subject: First Clue
I realize that many of you have decided not to play my game. The "other guy" told everyone that I was a reason that he stopped his game. I also know that someone took the first clue. I looked for it yesterday and it was not there. The second clue was in its proper place.

The first clue, once decoded, said, "Go to the place where Redwoods no longer grow. No need to count rings." I subsequently gave an interested party a hint about the meaning. The hint is, "Forestry".

I want all of the clues to be removed because I am sorry and ashamed that I led to the ending of a far superior game. I had hoped that the original game maker would embrace my challenge and find a way to compete and integrate me into his game. I was wrong.

I am too busy to find the clues myself and clean them up. However, I do not want anyone to obtain the identity of the original game maker and use it for evil. SO, I want to offer $20 to the first person to find the final clue and send me an e-mail description of it. Some of you will think that $20 is an inconsequencial amount, but some of you will think of good use for twenty dollars. I am not wealthy enough to offer more money. Please find the clues and e-mail me when you have come to the final clue. There are two checkpoints along the way. You must decode and send answers to two seperate e-mail addresses before receiving the next clue. In this way, I will know the people who are truly competing and those who are hangers-on.

Please complete the game and I will give the first person $20 in cash at a drop point so that we do not have to meet.

New trailhead or it's continuing?

Got this e-mail at 7:02PM:

Subject: it sucks that the conspiracy game ended...
From: John Blacksmith <bleedingmaroon08>
Quote:

Hey, you probably don't know who i am or why i am emailing you. The only way that you might know me is that i was really into the A&M game that recently ended. The one called the conspiracy. I am the one that made the blog that closely followed the events. I got your address because one of the emails was not send with blind carbon copy protection. I am kinda pissed off because i love ARGs and having a local one was a blast. Ofcourse some people were not matured enough to play and it was hijacked by impostors and whatever. For future reference, unless you get the info from the main websites or already known emails, then is just someone else trying to ruin the game for you.

ok, ill step down from my soapbox, i am really emailing you because my friend Eric Remington has been several days missing. I attached a picture of him just in case you know him or heard from him at A&M. He is my best friend, so please help me find him.

I wont ever email you again unless you actually reply telling me that you want to help out finding Eric. So dont expect any more emails, i hate spam myself.

Best of Regards

John Blacksmith

In My Expert opinion...

...this looks like a new game. Err. Gamejack. NewGameJack. GameNewJack? whatever.

I started catching up on this thread a day or two ago out of spite. I live outside of Dallas, Tx, and have many friends who go to A&M. But College Station is just out of my "I've got nothing to do this weekend let's take a random trip somewhere" range. Plus, the friends who go there are not the type that would really get into this, so I wouldn't even have been able to participate in it vicariously.

Now, I have a friend from high school whose brother went missing some years ago. she made a FaceBook and Myspace group about it, all about "Help Find So-and-So." She's sincere in her efforts, but expects little out of it.

Looking at the Wordpress account listed, it reads far more like a novel than a actual plea for help/where are you message. Also, the post on Jan 25 is quite flippant for someone who's been concerned about a persons whereabouts.

Quote:

Well apparently Eric is alive and well after all. I just got an email from him and he seems to be playing with me again. I mean i know i am obsessed with ARGs like the cloverfield one but ive been worried sick. Eric, dude, call your parents because they are worrried sick. Where have you been?!

Your email only had the subject as "Help" and a picture.
*pic*
'Genesis'
*/pic*
Well I left town and went to Austin to see my parents this morning. Whatever it is ill go check it out when i get back on sunday. But i am still not going to bother, just call me.

Kind of a strange way to get back in touch with someone, no? Two things are odd about this. One, his immediate dismissal of worry when he receives a one word email with a picture of a book in a library. Second, the photo itself. go ahead and follow the link to his account to have a look. I'm tired and can't be bothered to save and upload it. Go ahead, I'll wait.

The photo is tagged as "Genesis." Now, I can't read no Russian, so I don't know if that's a reference to the book itself, or if it means that *something* starts here.

Another thing I just noticed, what the hell kind of Dewey Decimal System is that library using? Obviously something so standardized that the Military Encyclopedia by Stocqueler [which can be read here in it's entirety] would be printed with it on the spine. I volunteered in a library some time ago, and I don't recall a U 24 S86 designation for anything. Or, maybe I'm just addled by sleep-dep at this point.

He then goes on to update barely two hours later with this:

Quote:

I called Eric's parents again and they still haven't heard any news. Apparently Eric's bank account and school savings have been depleted. I went to his apartment today and a neighbor told me that he hasnt seen anyone going inside for ages. Thinking back I guess something has been wrong for a long time, he wasnt very social the last few days and he somehow changed.

Again this is not the Eric Ive known since high school, he is not the kind to miss even a single day of school, yet I dont think he has been going to school for several days. I hope he is ok. Where ever he is.

Kinda quick change of thought for our friend here. The layout of the information layout so far reminds me of a game I got into a while back, where someone disappeared and our main point of contact was very "oh, where did he go-he's probably just fucking with me-now I'm worried again-oh looks like he's possessed by demons/was abducted by aliens/was kidnapped," all in a short frame of time, and then the game got started.

So, yeah, in effect, I think we got ourselves a game here, possibly in the same vein as suggested by kosmopol, the game-from-a-game setup.

Man, now that i did all that, I remember why I love playing ARG's so much! Investigation and speculation is addictive! Maybe I'll even try and get in touch with our Mr. Blacksmith...

[p.s. And if this turns out to be completely real, and this guy is truly concerned about his friend... I'm gonna feel like so much ass...]

This is really damn confusing.

Gamejack to game shutdown to gamejack on game shutdown?

My head is spinning.

Sweeeet.... Now I'm interested.

Don't know how to look up the Russian, though.

Also from the blog (1st post):

John Blacksmith wrote:
I contacted the good folks at wordpress and apparently one of their servers cached fire or something

"Cached" would be both a grammar AND spelling error there, and rather an odd one, wouldn'tcha say?

I googled bleedingmaroon08 and got 3 hits: 2 from the blog and 1 from the conspiracy08 blog, which of course ain't thar no more. At the end of each result, there are Google's usual links for "Cached", "Similar pages", and "Note this". Except there is no "Cached" for bleedingmaroon08's blog. Clicking on "Cached" for the conspiracy08 blog takes you to Google's cache of the page from Jan. 20, which implies that bleedingmaroon08's blog didn't yet exist at that time (I'm guessing, I'm new at this cache business). Interestingly, there WAS already an email address, bleedingmaroon08SPLATgmail.com, as seen on the conspiracy08 blog.

Head spinning? Check.

The russian book is a military encyclopedia/dictionary, presumably in the library of Texas A&M University, but I'm only making assumptions since I live across the water, but it would seem a reasonable one to make, seeing as that is the one John Blacksmith and Eric Remington(?) both attended.

Checking the U24 S86 designation now - looks like some kind of standard library code, and considering how old that military encyclopedia is, the book is a specific re-print with the number imprinted onto the spine. I think it may be a way of locating the book in the library, U24 could be an area in the library and S86 a shelf number...

Also the note and its translation, unless the guy who decoded it only did a very rough job, there are some misused words and grammatical errors in there which I wouldn't expect a university student to make, maybe there is something to be drawn from that, maybe not. Noticed a few spelling mistakes and such in his About section on the blog as well, once again not the kind of thing I would expect from a University major..

It may be a little late in the day, but I will see if I can bring anything substantial to this..

the Japanese postcard thingie

Couldn't find much on the Enlightenment Society in Tokyo, or rather I found a lot of stuff that didn't seem related. My google-fu is not so good.

This was my first try at deciphering kanji and I don't have the capability to display them on my puter, but from what I was able to figure, the first one means "enlightenment," and the last two together mean "society." I couldn't find the second one, but I am severely hampered here and have no idea what I'm doing on top of that. Confused

Japanese has many words from traditional chinese (usually with same or similar meanings) and yeah, I'm pretty much confirming that it the first two do mean "enlightenment" and the second two do mean "society".

Uh, I noticed the picture is of a brain flower? In that case, there are flowers that are called brain-flowers (Celosia, or something?) It's not much help at the moment, but I'm not really getting anything from that picture at all (I too, have limited google-fu).

I will talk with my friend tonight with regards to the Japanese, he knows Tokyo fairly well and may even recognize the script in the picture and at least confirm what we already suspect.

One more update on the blog so far today. The Muse song that is quoted in the letter is 'Thoughts of a dying Atheist' off the album 'Absolution'.

Although I'm struggling with the 'Brandenburg' text on the boarding pass, there are several flights, with connections all over the place leaving Dallas at 1020pm, all run by American Airlines, which is no surprise seeing as Dallas is their home airport.

More during the day no doubt..

http://www.penchinese.net/English/Members/huangxiang/huang-poet.htm

Could be something, could be nothing, but it does talk about him founding 'The Enlightenment Society', whether or not this is just a coincidence though is another matter..

A little about him from the American equivalent website of the one above;

http://www.pen.org/author.php/prmAID/169

and the PBS website provides a little more information, although slightly older i think...

http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov1999/wellfoundedfear/questions/char_poet.php3

I think you are right about Celosia hoj_lebowski, certainly looking at pictures it seems a reasonable assumption to make, even tho the name 'brain-flower is not specifically mentioned.

The article below is taken from the Texas A&M University website, Horticulture department, the same university that Blacksmith and Remington attend...thought you might like that tenuous link... Smile
