Could be something, could be nothing, but it does talk about him founding 'The Enlightenment Society', whether or not this is just a coincidence though is another matter..

You're talking about the Chinese poet Huang Xiang, right? I'm not really seeing anything about his society being located in Tokyo. I found mention of an Enlightenment Society that was founded when Taiwan was under Japanese rule, but that was in like 1919, and the name was later changed to New People Society or something (sorry, this is just a fly-by post before work).

This isn't exactly what I found, I think it was one of the penchinese sites.

I think you are right about Celosia hoj_lebowski, certainly looking at pictures it seems a reasonable assumption to make, even tho the name 'brain-flower is not specifically mentioned.

FWIW, I did a google image search for brain flower and Celosia popped right up.

Looking at the image on the blog, do the edges look kinda weird to anybody else? This was the picture found on the USB drive, remember. I dunno, the edges of the paper just look jagged & pixelated, but the interior of the image is smooth. Weird.

The picture is called "they". I have no idea what this is, nor what connection it has to Eric's disappearance. Any ideas what this is ? The enlightenment Society?

Wonder if the "they" is important, or the fact that John capitalized Society but not enlightenment. Ooh, also just noticed that in the picture, it's the other way round - Enlightenment is capped, but not society. No idea what to make of that, though.

I'm confused, where did the ticket come from, and the last page of the diary - were they posted earlier or somewhere else? Anyway, why is the diary scan called india.jpg? "Pretty much every major library in the world" - maybe we're supposed to look that book up and figure out what experiment Eric did.

Maybe this is silly, but the emphasis on the lyrics makes me think there may be something hidden under Eric's pillow in his apartment.

Yes, thats right. Like I said, it is probably just a coincidence, but I thought it was worth posting.

It looks like it was a postcard that was scanned in, but I will take a closer look. Hopefully have the kanji confirmed tonight as well.

I'm guessing the book he's on about is the Soviet Military encyclopedia in the picture entitled 'Genesis' in the Jan 25th entry. You'll be looking for a first edition tho I think, not a reprint as that was done after the split of the USSR and likely won't contain the information that is required.

Not to my knowledge.

Most of the pictures have strange names, perhaps I should pay closer attention to those as well.

Good call, hadn't thought of that. Also didn't really take into account the fact that MUSE is in capital letters. Like I said the song was Thoughts of a Dying Atheist from the album Absolution, maybe there is something in the theme of the album? Will have to have a listen when I get home.

And is it me or does the flower emblem look like a crude way of disguising a bastardized pentagram, that is with the 2 points to the top representing the 'beast' as opposed to the correct way round with just the one point on top and the two points on the bottom representing 'woman' basically..

Wow, now that you mention it, I totally see the pentagram. Especially due to the circle around it.

Nothing useful to add from me at the moment, except...Whoa, I wish I could travel to Japan (to the Enlightenment society, I'm presuming?) in First Class, just like Eric. Maybe that's where a ton of his savings went- towards the ticket.

EDIT: decided just for the heck of it to pull out the words on the enlightenment society card-thing. Just in cases someone needs to google, and has better luck. I'm not sure if the words will come up but they look okay on mine:

That would be the logical conclusion, as well as hotel rooms etc, if only we could figure out where in Tokyo they are and what precisely they are...

ooook, just found this...

Now, I know Texas is like, huge, but this can't just be a coincidence....

Sorry, but that's exactly what it looks like to me. Texas is indeed, like, huge Smile - College Station and Brownsville are nearly 400 miles apart. Plus that blogspot hasn't been updated since July.

Yeah, kinda thought it was a little to good to be true. I am used to traveling a couple of miles up or down the road and ending up in a different county, so when it comes to the states my distance perception is thrown all out of whack...

Wow, it begins to be more and more interesting, even if we are on the wrong path.

Could somebody post the "Genesis" picture with Russian? I could translate it.

啓蒙社会

Interesting is, I found mention about 啓蒙社会 (Enlightenment Society) on this Wikipedia homepage: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E6%88%A6%E4%BA%89%E5%93%B2%E5%AD%A6
(戦争哲学, engl. for "Philosophy of war") in the capitel (平和論), "Pacifists".

Quote:
平和という状態が自然に実現できないことは歴史の事例から明らかであり、啓蒙・社会的措置・国際機関などによる平和構想が練られてきた。

As far as I understand Japanese the translation of this sentence is:
"The examples of history have shown clearly: the condition of peace itself cannot be naturally realized, so the international organisations like "Enlightenment society" are working on this tasks".

Any Japanese reading people, is it wrong translation?

Googling for (啓蒙社会) brought one more found. (Sorry for spamming, hope it's the right way of searching)

http://ci.nii.ac.jp/naid/110004655329/en/

THE NEW TOWN OF EDINBURGH AND THE SCOTTISH ENLIGHTENMENT

Quote:
In this paper, the influence of the Scottish Enlightenment theory of the Ideal Society on the development of the first New Town of Edinburgh, one of the major urban developments in eighteenth century Europe, is considered focusing on; 1) the members of the leading circle of the Scottish Enlightenment, many of whom were associated with the New Town project; and, 2) the provisions of building which were published by the Town Council of Edinburgh in 1768 as an Act.

(I'm tired now to translate Japanese, perhaps later - if it's really related)

The site is OOG, I think, because to write an scientific essay about Scottosh Enlightment society in Japanese is too far for an ARG.

Hi guys, just jumping in on this one, did have a real go at the Enlightment translation last night, but like others drew a blank.

I did notice that the pure translation for enlightenment society (only on Babelfish) threw up a few different symbols and meanings but after a while it started to annoy me as I was squinting too much to read the tiny symbols!

closeups of the Russian book

I played with the second a little to try to make the letters clearer, but I'm not sure how effective it was.

EDIT: For those who want to play along with kosmopol, here are some links I just found: http://www.purplehell.com/riddletools/cyrillic.htm and

Oh, thanx,

it's really Военный Энциклопедический Словарь, a Soviet Military Encyclopedia. The book design shows, it's really from Soviet era.

So, linking this to kosmopol's wiki find, would that possibly mean that we might (if someone found the book) find information on philosophy of war (and thus enlightenment society)? After all, it is a military encyclopedia...

Could be possible, though I suppose, even if there is a mention about the Enlightment society in Soviet military encyclopedia, this mention is surely very negative (because the Soviet doctrine criticized pacifism very hard). I'll go to our local slavic Library, perhaps they have this dictionary.

Seems John slept with Eric's girlfriend, and Eric found out... oh, teh drama.

Perhaps more importantly, we now have our enlightenment society: http://humanenlightenmentproject.mfbiz.com/
