-Feelings about Edwin-

-We've all talked about his puzzles and codes, but I don't think we've really discussed what we feel about Edwin himself. What does everyone think about him?

Do you feel that he's a monster? A slave to the queen? A sellout? Or do you feel nothing about him, only his work?

Re: -Feelings about Edwin-

I confess, Psyche -- I approach Edwin with impassiveness deliberately.

He's a scientist, and in the world of science and reason and logic, there's not much room for emotion (it doesn't contribute in a productive way). I think he both recognizes this and appreciates as much.

At the same time, I find I enjoy his manner of speaking and attention to details. Some are turned off by what they deem to be a rather cold personality, but again, look at his line of work -- he's just being what he is: a scientist/inventor. Feelings interrupt the logical flow of deduction needed to prove theories, correct mistakes, etc.

Personally though, I like Edwin. I picture him as the kind of person that I could hold honest debates with; bias uninvolved. It's refreshing to find another mind to 'do battle with'. However, as is custom, he's stayed in strict character this whole time, and I haven't really gotten to 'know' him. Although, that's implying that there's more to be known.

Plus, you're automatically interesting in my book when you mention anything Hannibal Lector-related. It's not often that I find another person that enjoyed the book code as much as I did Red Dragon. I just love solving things, and Edwin taps into that.

I think I like Edwin. He does seem a bit cold and scientific but I think this is from a lack of experience with social interaction and not a lack of desire to be social and this is something that I can relate to personally. He wants to offer us tea and tarts and be a good host but he has had only lab rats for company, possibly for years.

I think he is very passionate about his work and devoted to the Queen, enough so to perform dangerous tests on his own brother, but I also think that underneath he is a little worried about Morcar and possibly a bit guilty about testing on him. I think he is torn between his concern for his brother and his drive to understand whatever it is these tests are studying. And possibly afraid of the consequences from the Queen if he doesn't finish his research.

He does seem to be concerned about Morcar's disappearance but he is not actively searching for him... maybe he has an idea of where Morcar is and this is somewhere Edwin really does not want to be? Edwin seems to me to be more concerned with his work than his brother but I don't want to be too quick in judging him for that because we aren't sure what pressures he is under from Her Majesty or the importance of what he's studying.

Maybe he feels he is doing what he has to do, at whatever cost. Maybe he has had to make a choice between scientific discovery and possibly damaging a relationship (or hurting someone) and now he must live with that burden.

On the whole, I am drawn to Edwin. I know he has feelings because of the way he talks about whatever was in that cage and the way he finds beauty in math and science and relates it to the soul and the human experience. I think he just has a hard time expressing those feelings and is probably a little self conscious about his abilities to interact with people in a non-scientific setting. But he is reaching out to us...

I like Edwin. Just enough determination, a little bit of humor, a dash of madness and a whole lot of passion. I don't think he's a monster for using his brother to perform his experiments. I think he just believes his work is of great significance and needs to be achieved. He has shown some amount of guilt, so I know a conscience is still there. There's a ghost in the machine, if you will... Razz

He's a very collected guy, with a great mind. I'm very fond of the way he thinks.

I like Edwin a lot. It's been a long time since I had someone inspire my desire for science and research, and it's a great breath of fresh air to feel my brain being ignited like that. I think my family grew tired of me rambling about all the things I was researching for Edwin anyway, so I suppose it's good that he's appreciating all the information I'm throwing at him.

-I have mixed feeling about the guy. I enjoy talking with him, because he has some interesting views (Sybil wants to have his babies), but I don't agree with his methods.
As I've said in Vent, he's got that detached, clinical personality type that mirrors my sister, so it's nothing new to me. But he doesn't seem to have much emotion when it comes to Morcar. That disturbs me.-

Edwin

He showed me his emotional side. We even got to the point of terms of endearment.

I love him. I miss him. And We're going to have tea together.

Edwin = cool in my book.

Edwin

I have to agree with Melody on Edwin. He is a fantastic person. He is intelligent and inventive while also being an aesthetic genius. He loves his brother and cares for him greatly. I hope that we can aid him before it is too late.

I've actually liked Edwin from the start. However, in the beginning, I saw him as a cold, detached scientist without care for his brother. I saw him as using his brother for experiments - though I did get the feeling that Morcar consented to these experiments, so it wasn't all cruelty.

While I didn't appreciate him from some emotional aspect, I saw him fascinating for his love of science and pursuit of truth in symmetry. Even if I hated the math part of it all! I also identified with him on being unused to socializing and for loving Leonardo Da Vinci. One of my favourites.

Now that we've learned more about him, I realize that he does have an emotional side, and that he is quite human. That only made him more likable to me, naturally, and I think I see it shining through in his e-mails just a bit more. Maybe I only just noticed it, or maybe he's adjusted to all of the socializing.

I really enjoyed this week, even if I was unable to contribute anything, and I look forward to when Edwin is unsilenced. And to having tea with him! ^_^
