I appreciate the baseball reference, a little sports talk is nice...

it looks like an oiltanker... just look at how much smoke there is.
also it seems they blurred the oil leaking out of the tanker... you can clearly see the water is black to the left of the ship

also those kinda look like claw marks:

The ship actually looks a little bit like a Naval vessel (a Destroyer, maybe)...which would explain the relatively large military interest.

And, I still think the black thing might just be a bulbous bow.

So I opened up 1-18-08 to view the image, and then started reading the comments on this thread, and forgot about the open window, and despite knowing what it was, the roar still scared the shite out of me. I nearly jumped out of my chair, and my co-worker, two offices away just shouted: What the hell was that?

Ehm guys, If you all really want to know how a tanker sinks when attacked or damaged, look at this (kudos to someone else finding it first)!
Michigan Daily News article about a tanker sinking.

LOL...the same thing happened to me!
Except I'm at home...still scared the crap out of me though.

Anyway...at least the pic has done one thing...it's got this board talking again.

Here comes some wild speculation:

1) What if it is, as Chrizy said, a military vessel? Something about it jsut looks wrong - color, distances, etc... - I can't quite place it.

First off, the color feels wrong; most tankers I've seen have been lighter or white. Secondly, there are towers behind it that don't seem to be part of the main tower.

Dunno... We're assuming it's a tanker, but something feels wrong.

You know what it reminds me of?

Pic 1
Pic 2

That's a battleship in Pearl Harbor.

2) Yes, we saw the article explaining the sinking of a tanker if snapped in the middle, but what if MGP tore through the tanker end to end?

Why do I think that? The tower we see isn't wide enough; a tanker is significantly wider than that. There also looks to be structural damage to the tower itself to the right. Also, this might explain why this thing is still afloat in such a way; the main tank is partially intact, and the air pocket is keeping the boat at that angle.

MSC

It looks like a ship from the military sealift command. They're the ones that do all the refueling for the Navy now.

As sad as it sounds, I am actually doubting there is a video from which this could've been taken.
We have already figured out the fact smoke on this pic was created using the clone stamp tool. This proves that the image has been created as a static bitmap image, not taken from a video. Or do you think they really took one frame and added even more smoke to it? :) That would be pointless.

I guess it's there just to make us aware that something else is going on besides the Chuai station attack, and now it's not the eco-terrosists, since we can actually see the "scars" on the hull. Remember, considering we are all in an ARG, we don't even know anything about any possible monster threats yet. We only know that something's fishy with Tagruato.

Well...people have already seen the movie, so it's pretty obvious this pic doesn't have anything tangible to do with it.

However...it might have sequel implications (let's hope).

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
going with the theory that they might still try to salvage the time line sort of....

Perhaps this is military vessel. Here's my theory:

This is a Cuban military vessel in a Cuban harbor. The ship doesn't look like anything we are quite familiar with. The US military helicopters? Castro realized the stuff hit the fan and called Gitmo to help pick up the pieces. The US realized that the stuff hit the fan and actually helped pick up the pieces. Very Happy

Ok, two things i've noticed.

1) Whatever they blurred out on the right is obviously something which the public would a) notice easily (ie, landmark) or b) something they're not supposed to see.
-Im leaning towards landmark of some sort, and I think we should focus on whatever the hell that is foremost.

2) In front of the apparent claw marks on the side of the ship, anyone else think that circular hole/object may be a logo or sorts? Or whatever is left of the logo?
-Any chance someone can crop that with photoshop or something and then rotate it?

These pictures are obviously not part of the movie timeline. Don't see what the big debate is. This could be a shot taken AFTER MGP attacks New York. As I said before, these pics could just represent a file someone has on the "Monster Attack of '08"

They could've just blurred out the SOL in the backgound just to keep us speculating.

If this ship was coming to the aid of the damaged Tag tanker...then perhaps MGP hit the tanker on the way into town and this ship on the way out. Very Happy
