Greatest Marketed Movie Ever?
Could it be?

Just wanted to put it out there…but could Cloverfield be the greatest marketed movie ever? Honestly, I have been excited about upcoming movies, but I have never been this excited about a movie opening. I faithfully visit sites and forums everyday seeing the latest developments and what clues people have found. I think that by marketing this as an ARG it's brilliant.

Few of the things they have done that were great, were…

1) Having a teaser with no title…I have never seen that done before…maybe posters of sequels, but you knew what the movie was based on the picture. No teaser title sealed it for me, after seeing Transformers; I was talking more about the teaser and hitting the web when I got home.

2) Having alternate connected websites. This helps build the back-story that other movies either fail to do or try to squeeze into the 2hr attention span of the moviegoers.

3) Utilizing My Space. I may have gone there a few times to see what's up (I not a My Spacer), but the forums kept us up to date with important info. But, they try to make you care about these people and once again, more back-story.

4) To further tighten the bond of total strangers, when people would order items from Slusho!, clues were added, but you had to piece it together with someone else thousands of miles away. Wow!

5) But I guess the biggest one is the mystery and kinda sorta knowing what's going to happen, but not really. Most trailers, you know what's going to happen; because they show all the good parts and most movies are predicable. You know that John McClain is going to kill everyone and say "Yippee Kay Yay", Optimus Prime will beat Megatron, Lt. Ripley will kill the Aliens (even though she died in A3…ok surprise…but they regenerate her to kill them again), Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks get together in Sleepless in Seattle". But, here we are not sure whom if anyone survives. I mean Rob is a marketing guy…what's he gonna do feed the monster pie charts and spreadsheets until he explodes?

So, anyway what do you guys think of their marketing…
1. Greatest Ever!
2. Not Bad
3. So-So
4. Seen Better
5. Worst Ever and a Waste of Time!

I think it isn't the best ever, 'cause I hope JJ Abrams won't stop amuse us with his mysteries.

But at the moment, it's imho the best movie marketing.

sorry dudes, not to burst the fanboy bubble going on, but this is far from GREATEST EVER. Titanic holds that record, and shall for some time. Over a Billion bucks grossed Worldwide is far beyond what Cloverfield can accomplish I'm afraid...

ummm, you need to read a little closer before posting. They didnt say greatest film ever, or highest grosser ever. They said best marketed film. The stuff leading up to it, the websites, the viral marketing , etc. Thats what the question was about, not money

LOL Rookie LOL

yeah...no worries...working in the film industry for 4 years doesn't make me a rookie. Your "marketing" is JUDGED by the amount of money you gross. And, trust me, if you lived anywhere outside the US during Titanic, you saw it everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE. Besides, take 4 or 5 people off the street if you were to compare the way both have been marketed. Then ask those people which one they've heard of. There are still a LOT of people who don't know a THING about Cloverfield, and couldn't care less. Titanic, on the other hand, had a HUGE marketing plan, that, as much as I hate to say it, ultimately "pwns" this underground-stuff us geeks are into.

I guess the reason why I like it and posted this thread is because most marketing is forced at you (even now the closer we get to the opening more and more commercials are popping up for Cloverfield, even though the mystery is still there, it sucks because now it's being forced at us). Why I think this is great marketing is that it gets the viewer involved. Just like the wii, now kids have to get off their ass and play (yeah it's still a video game, but you get the point). It's not like, ok...you see the trailer, you see the commercials, you go to the website to signup for a free giveaway and then you see the movie. Here, yes those not all wrapped up can still enjoy the movie with just those basics, but this movie generates dialog (i.e...Like we are having now...funny thing when I had dialog with people about Titanic, I was like why would I want to see that, I know the ending...the boat sinks! When I eventually saw it on DVD, I do agree great movie, but I wasn't compelled to see it right away). All I'm saying is that this movie draws people from around the world to work together to better the movie going experience. Regardless of the movies outcome either blockbuster or just busted, I still will enjoy my time playing Nancy....errr Nathan Drew.
