Are critics jaded by movies today?

New ideas are hard to come by with movies these days. Even when there is an orginal idea for a movie, even if it's doing something old and worn in a new way, critics seem very harsh when meting out their judgement of these films.

Are critics just jaded these days? The only films that seem to garner solid ratings any longer, are foreign films and documentaries. Cloverfield already has a low 40% rating over on Rottentomatoes.

Or perhaps critics don't care about fun movies. To them, gone are the days when seeing a flick was about having fun. Just watching some great action with a big tub of popcorn. Movies have deep acting, complex scripts, and a profound meaning and purpose.

It's a pity that so many fun movies are lambasted by the media more often than not these days. I'll be seeing Cloverfield on Friday, and I know what to expect. Medicore dialog, lots of action, and a fun movie. It's a giant monster flick, not Gone with the Wind, or Ghandi. Too bad so many critics expect every movie to have as much meaning as those sorts of films these days.

I've always thought that critics are jaded.
Most movies I love got TERRIBLE reviews.

You have to figure, after seeing hundreds, maybe thousands of movie- it's probably hard to please them anymore.
They love movies like 'crash'- where it takes racial stereotyping to the worst degree, but since it addresses the issue, critics rave about how amazing it is.

A little monster movie, with really no social commentary? Of course they're not going to love it.
It's almost like people don't want to have fun at the movies anymore.

Think they are jaded. I dont listen to reviewers, more on word of mouth or fans posting reviews.

I think critics have no say on how good the movie is, and I learned that the hard way, (let's just say I'm not going to listen to anyone who says Syriana is a good movie...).

I believe that the best reviewers are the audience themselves. Ther opinion should count, not somebody who makes a living telling people what or what not to watch.

Just because some critics say a movie is good doesn't mean that everyone will like it.

Lord of the Rings for example, I hate those movies with everything I am.

I liked Legally Blonde, and the critics hated the movie but loved Reese Witherspoon.

All that matters is your opinion. Not the critics.

as of right now, its too early for rotten tomatoes to be a trusted source of average scores. wait 2 weeks or so until after its out and THEN look at RT, they barely have any reviews on there.

It's highly doubtful. The people trying to get into pre-screenings are pretty much already hooked. However, I'm fully prepared for it not to live up to the hype, but that wouldn't make it a bad movie to me.

If I didn't know any better, I'd swear that post was made by my sister, but she knows nothing of this site. Probably has no idea about Cloverfield at all, except the MySpace ads.

Just goes to show though, no matter how wrong someone is, there'll always be at least one person who agrees with them. Smile
