the May thing

I think the Coney Island scenes are there to pay tribute to the Beast From 20000 Fathoms, the inspiration for the original Godzilla, which in turn inspired JJ to want to make this movie. That is where the bf20kf was killed. He could have chosen any number of places for them to have a special flashback day so that just seems to make it obvious to me that is why it was there. May makes perfect sense for that. I also do not believe that just because the movie is released that this is the end of this viral thing. I think there is much more to come and a lot of things will get wrapped up or pulled together in the sequel.

It's perfectly obvious why the film can not take place in January.

If all the people who supposed saw the film before tonight had said something this would have been cleared up.

All the "flashback" scenes of Rob and Beth are them talking about and going to Coney Island and riding the rides.

The rides aren't open in January, it would look ridiculous to date it as January. Nobody goes to Coney island in January unless they live there.
The "flashbacks" are a large part of the film, they were not going to reshoot them just to fit the ARE and the movie would have been less than an hour without them. Besides they are a major portion of the plot.

So, the dates in the ARE are meaningless, they just couldn't be bothered to make them match the film.

Not necessarily true. Whose to say that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Rob and Beth didn't ride those rides in August/September and then a few months later they have the going away party after Rob drops the ball with Beth
. I think the filmmakers really made a big mistake by not following through with the viral marketing. They're going to have a lot of disappointed fans pointing out that they screwed the pooch on that one.

Because the flashback scenes are also dated, they are eaxactly one month before May 22.

The timeline of him leaving so quickly doesn't work IMHO anyway.
They should have just made the date when the monster hits 1-18-08 and set the flashbacks further back a few months, like in September.

OK so we're complaining about the lack of precision and consistency in a Hollywood marketing campaign.

No were are complaining about the fact that it would have took about 10 minutes worth of effort to have it match and they couldn't be bothered.
