New to ARG

Hello..

I have read through a bunch of stuff about ARG and i'm thinking of starting with it.

But first i got some questions.. i don't know if this already has been answerd so don't get mad if somone has...

1.- How time consuming is it to play ARG's?
2.- Do i need to be a genius or something to crack the problems?
3.- How deep can the puppetmaster go? I mean. is it possible that the puppetmaster search me up IRL to get the story to keep on going?

i wasn't sure what topic i should put this under.

hi martin

acheron is my pretty much my first ARG - but i think i can answer some of these questions

1. time consumption ultimately depends on you. to keep track of what's going on and follow the story will probably require you to log on everyday or two and spend an hour reading posts and visiting sites ... however, if you want to try your hand at the puzzles, depending on how tricky they are, and how adept you are at that sort of thing, you could easily spend more than an hour a day ... and if you get obsessed (like i'm starting to be with acheron) you could find yourself checking email & sites a couple of times a day, plus researching crytopography, plus doing lots of googling.

2. i don't believe you need to be a genius, but if it's the first time (or the first time in a long time) you've tries your hand at these kind of puzzles a learning curve is to be expected. those more experienced will probably find a solution faster (because they'll at least have a vague idea of where to start) but then again a newbie could see something fresh .... it also depends on the kinds of puzzles the PMs use ... lots seem to involve crytopgraphy, maths, etc. but not all. there are also likely to be challenges involving role play, more traditional detective work and who knows what else.

3. you're in control of what information you give to a PM. you don't have to use your real name, you can give them no physical address or a PO box. i'd always encourage you to use discretion and common sense (particularly if you're getting requests for information from someone not confirmed to be involved with a confirmed ARG). it *is* possible that there will be (and there has been) games that involve face-to-face contact, and that may include someone coming knocking on your door. if you're up for that, go for it, but just always be as wary as you would be giving info to any stranger.

these are just my thoughts, and like i said i'm only just embarking on the adventure myself. hope it helps though - and welcome Smile

cheers,
aiesha

Welcome!

Some answers

1. It can be very time consuming if you really get into it. But it's up to you how much time you spend. You can catch up easily on the message boards if you take a break.

2. Nope. The genius of the group usually carries the day.

3. A full immersion type game could get very up close and personal. For me, it's one of the attractions. With the last two game launches (CTW and Acheron), you could opt out of full contact and keep it online. Other games may not be so overt.

As much or as little as you want to spend on it. I agree with the comments made by others (I am also fairly new have joined only a few months ago) - to keep on top of new developments, you should check in at least once a day if possible once the game gets rolling.

No. Most of the puzzle solving is a cooperative effort, there are may ways to help with the process, doing research, keeping a daily log for others to follow, interacting with the characters (some people are good at the puzzles but have a hard time with getting close to the characters), adding any comment or question that may trigger someone else to solve a problem are all important. I haven't made a puzzle solve directly but have jogged enough memories of others to allow them to do so. That is why we work together as a team. Wink

There is usually an option for either Limited immersion (minimal real life interaction) or full immersion (and as much as you want to provide beyond the requirements for Full), YOU are in control of How Deep you go, not the Puppet Master.

The PM's can only use the information that you provide. If it is given to the PM with your registration then all characters may have access to it, if you only give it to one character, then depending on what happens to the one character will determine who has the info. They will not search you up to keep the story going, and at any point you can request to withdraw from the game and have your information wiped, or change the degree of immersion you want by contacting the administration team of the game and requesting a change.

You will only be contacted through the methods that you provide. No one will go looking for your address and show up at your door demanding that you continue to play, unhappy gamers leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
