I honestly dont remember seeing anything in that last shot of coney island that was out of the ordinary. imdb is full of crap. That whole point of that scene is meant to convey a sense of irony over the fact that MGP kicks NYCs ass.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
FYI, in the final scene, Beth looks toward the camera and says (paraphrase) "today was a good day" and then it cuts out.
yeah and a week later the guy who is your best friend and who you just slept with for the first time is going to decide to dump you and go to Japan.
Don't feel too bad though as he will risk his life to save you so you can get bombed to death later.

I haven't seen the movie, but just from the description, it goes, as you said, for the ironic. Like the $11 dollar man saying, "It's going to be the best night ever."
That's the one question I have... if there is a whisper at the end, and it IS Rob, then he's still alive after the bombing? If that's true, would there be a sequel, and if so, do you think it would involve him, or just go somewhere else in terms of where the monster goes next?
In other words, with half the characters dead in the end, and the love story at its climax, do you think Rob and Beth would be in a sequel, or would it be an entirely new cast altogether, suffering through their own 1-18-08?
SEQUEL POSSIBILITIES:
- The hunt for MGP
- The MGP attacks Paris
- Rob becomes a daddy!

Coney Island idea. I am convinced the reason Coney Island was used as a backdrop for that portion of the story is to pay homage to the Beast From 20000 Fathoms (which a lot of people thought this movie might be a remake or adaptation of). That movie influenced the original Godzilla which inturn influenced JJ to make this movie. Its the original American monster from the deep movie. I for one saw nothing crash down into the water. Maybe it was because I was so disoriented from the motion sickness...lol.

Beast from 2000 Fathoms was referenced in the credits, so was king kong, I guess there must have been footage of the movie playing somewhere in the chaos

You mentioning that made me think of an episode of The Real Ghostbusters where a group of cultists summon Cthulhu up at Coney Island, and there's Cthulhu spawn running all over the place. I made a thread about it, but I guess that RG episode was probably an homage to both Lovecraft and The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms... so perhaps Cloverfield is referencing those things as well. Just the similarity struck me as funny is all.

I never saw the monster falling from the sky at any point. The last shot is indeed Rob and Beth at Coney Island, but most of the camera work is them filming themselves on what may be a farris wheel. You think they'd see this big thing drop from the sky and comment on it or zoom in.
Besides, that would detract from the point of that scene which is to make people feel for the couple.

I saw this movie today, (I live in Australia) and i can confirm that something DID indeed fall from the sky in the last scene. Rob and Beth are sitting in a ferris wheel high above the location (I am not fammiliar with american geography) and in the background a small object can be seen falling from the sky into the water behind.
The object appears to be small, and falls a long distance away from the shore. It does not seem to "crash" land and instead "dives" immediately into the water in a very streamlined fashion.
As for a whisper, I nor my friends were able to hear it if it did indeed occur.
Needless to say, this is possibly one of the most brilliant movies I have ever seen.

But let's say that this does happen...
Does anyone remember the Tagrauto headline about the chunk of that fell off the "ChimpanzIII"- perhaps that's what it was. how long ago was it when that was posted/ when it happened?
[spec] and I'm starting to wonder what exactly woke the monster up? Was it their drilling? Or was it the chunk from the ChimpanzIII falling from the sky?

[FOUND IT] The Tagruato Headline: Hatsui Satellite Works for the Futura
Quote:
In their latest gesture to reach out to fellow man, Tagruato used the Hatsui satellite to try to identify a rogue piece that is thought to have fallen off of the Japanese Government's "ChimpanzIII" satellite. Although Hatsui's work has not yet been able to confirm the identity of the fallen piece, Tagruato scientists and engineers are busily trying to track and recover the fragment. According to Hatsui data, it disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean late last week.
That probably answers everyone's question about what it was...[/quote]

No it doesnt, all this viral shit does not relate to the movie (no relation made what so ever)... why should a small peice of the puzzle like a space satelite rogue peice falling out of the sky make any relation?
Maybe it was a dead bird, or something else... or maybe
im wrong.
