Hmm... webbed claws could be a possibility. I'll make some changes in my drawing to see how that would look.

I'm pretty sure there are not claws of any type at the ends of the abdominal appendages. I think it's something like the suckers at the ends of a squid's long tentacles:

Here's a pretty clear image of the appendage:

Clover,

I'm sorry I ever doubted you. You are completely 100% correct about the teeth. There are two sets and I have the proof finally! I found a higher quality version and with a little photoshop magic it's pretty clear.

Just as the monster is about to chomp:

Down the hatch Hud!

He's got "canine" teeth that show when his mouth is closed like a crocodile. There are four small teeth inside his mouth you can only see when he opens his mouth.

Good eye!

Edit: Just for fun, The last thing Hud sees in his life: The monster's tongue!

Yay! =D Thanks! Now I can stop worrying about my eyesight. XD

@ D3MO Re:Bat... I'm sorry, but I don't see it. I understand where you're going with the shape of the forelimbs, but if you recall Hud's final scene, you can see, I think it's on the left of the screen, that Clover has a bend the bat does not. Clover also has that long arm part I'm not sure what it is (if the small bend is like the elbow, what's that second bend and long arm part? Wrist and palm? How awkward!)

@ D-Ares- I know the shape is right for it, but Clover seems to be in the wrong family/class/whatever to have tentacles and hands with claws. So I'll be stubborn and continue to say no tentacles until either the DVd or the toy prove me wrong. XD

This is fun, discussing monsters like real animals. XD

I just realized something, watching that video; the night vision disappears mid shot. I'm pretty sure Hud didn't have time to fiddle with the settings and switch off night vision while being attacked by the parasites.

Watch Hud's final scene closely. I still insist the "outer" mouth opens and it's "real" mouth is behind that. I'm sorry I keep bringing it up, but only one other person sees it to and I wonder if we're just seeing things?

...

As for the "tubes"/"claws" debate... Webbed claws? I definitely see the end flex like a widening tube, but in my mind, belly tubes are just too weird. Webbed claws/flippers that grab things sound more reasonable (or as reasonable as I can get concerning giant monsters ;P)

*laughs* Holy crap! I didn't realize people meant that the second mouth is INSIDE the first! I thought that people kept connecting that to the whole 'people-suckin' belly' rumor!!

Yeah, I totally agree about it having two rows of teeth. Didn't know that's what I was disagreeing with...

Also, to D_Ares;
While I think that they do look a little like tentacles in that shot you posted, they also look a lot like flippers, not to mention that watching the shot shows that they're clearly jointed; a tentacle wouldn't have joints. Other shots of the abdominal limbs (such as Hud's death) show the same thing. A jointed tentacle doesn't make any sense.

Sorry for the doublepost, but I wanted to bump this thread.

Red = joint
Blue = Flipper

See? Where MGP is loosely based off living things, a jointed tentacle doesn't make sense. Now look at the flippers on a plesiosaur:

Looks like the diamond-head shape of a tentacle, but seems much more plausible.

what if it's just a jointed flipper w/ suckers on it?

I'm pretty sure what we see here is actually just the middle hands balled up into fists.

why fists? I gotta be honest, my first instinctive notion wasn't 'fists' when I saw it... If anything [and I know it's wrong] they looked like hooves. [again, I know they're not hooves] but that was my first perception. The fact is, no one saw 'claws' on the smaller appendages... So there is no confirmation that those were even hands. We saw joints and that was it... A fist would at least tense and relax itself, or it would have shown a more lumpy appearance to it... Or even to emphasize that it was hands, they would have shown them... shown some sort of movement in any way...

Actually, I saw hooves the first time, too. But we know that's not right.
Still, if they ARE claws, they could have that triangular shape; after all, think of how MGP's hands fold up when he knuckle-walks. There was a picture somewhere of a sort of retractable flipper between two finger-claws that would fold downwards towards the base of the wrist-- I like this idea. At the same time, I think it's more likely that they're JUST claws or JUST flippers. Also, we've bandied the idea of more than one set of auxiliary limbs about, so there could be both claws AND flippers.

Still, for me, the idea of a tentacle with joints doesn't make sense; where the monster was designed to have realistic features, jointed tentacles are right out, since a tentacle is designed around the contraction and expansion of certain parts of the muscle that makes up the tentacle; bones would get in the way of this, and if there are bones, it might as well be a claw or flipper.

It is fun to speculate. I cannot wait until an official photo of the MGP model, artist drawings or the toy comes out so we can see him in all is glory.

I agree with D3MO that MGP strongly resembles a bat in the face and arms (upper body). Your not alone my friend.
Clover, it does seem to have an extra bend but I would wager that a bat was one of inspirations for this creature. The Bat comparison was discussed a while back after the early screenings.

I always think that roar picture headman posted makes MGP's head look way too narrow. Any explanations why this is besides the ol' 'perspective!' deus-ex?

longo armo

Know it's been discussed elsewhere, but I thought this was a good pic to show how really long the bat arms can be compared to the body. In this pic, the whole front arm still doesn't fit in the picture.

Just thought I'd sprinkle this thread with another image. I had a few hours to kill, so made this. Accurate: no. Nice Idea: I like to think so.
