The name Cloverfield is only mentioned in the beginning where it states

MULTIPLE SIGHTINGS OF THE CASE DESIGNATE
"CLOVERFIELD"

As far as interviews I've seen of the cast...thats all it is...the government/military codename given to the incident...and that it only began as a codename for the actual movie itself...but then the producers decided to run with it.

In numerous interviews with the cast and director and other people who worked on the movie...the name of the street the studio is on near J.J's Abrams old office.

Matt Reeves had a slightly different explanation. Cbf explaining but here's a link that has the interview...its the last question in the interview.
http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/2008/01/laist-matt-reeves-interview.html

Here's a theory I just came up with. Its complete speculation. 4 leaf clovers are lucky right. So a cloverfield would be extremely lucky. If Rob and beth
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
survived the explosions, the bridge collapsing on them and the attacks of the monster
, then when the tape was found they would've been rescued, and someone says "you guys are extremely lucky to be alive...you must of been in a whole field of clovers to have been lucky enough to survive that" and thus they designate their story/sightings on the SD card as Cloverfield.

However, I think thats highly unlikely. And I think the codename Cloverfield is given to the MGP incident as a whole, not just the codename given to their footage. Because it says multiple sightings of the case designate cloverfield...which would probably mean multiple sightings of the MGP attack as a whole...

I think i just shot down my own theory haha

OK! Now for the little monsters. They fall off the big monster. Looks like quite a few fall off, which seems odd coz u don't see too many of them. I assumed they'd be running all over the city. I didn't quite see where theyy were falling from. You only really see where they're falling from in the 5 sec scene where you can see MGPs arms on his underbelly, and i was too busy looking at them that by the time i noticed the little ones falling off, the shot had changed.

Anyway. If nothing else, I would say they derived from a crab. They look a little more spider like in there movement (and when I saw them in the infra red scene I first thought thats what they were)

they have at least 6 legs...possibly 8...they move bloody fast so its hard to tell, and HUD is a bit shaky with the camera at times grrr!! haha! But he makes us laugh so hes alright!

Their head/face...well honestly...to me...it looks like a deranged crab claw. Its like a pincer...and it snaps closed really quick. The pincer...its vertical not horizontal, like as if the pincer was like a jaw...it would open and close up and down like a human...not sideways. And on the inside edge of the pincers it had sharp jagged edges (like a crab claw has, but more extreme, like teeth, but they seemed to be the same colour/texture as the rest of the pincer)

I noticed two black beady eyes (in infra red it looked like there was more eyes...but i couldnt tell)

actually this following image...it has legs very similar...but less...and it has ridges on its back like this creature would...but it doesn't look anything else like this creature

hope that helps

I haven't seen anyone get MGP's face and head right yet. Good tries, but everyone wants to make his mouth too even of an arc. The middle of his mouth has a distinct upturn where his lower jaw protrudes up towards his nostril area. He doesn't so much have nostrils to speak of, at least not pronounced. His gill-ear structures ride higher on his head, and the head is more boxy. Take a look at a pug's head and face for comparison.

I agree with Euchre...

The eyes look a lot like Abe Sapien's from Hellboy
The mouth has a W shape with teeth at the very end. They look much like the Predator's mandibles only smaller.
Has six legs with the front "arms/legs" multi-flexible and can bend forwards and backwards
Very rigid tail that the creature has full control of
Small arms underneath the belly (bringing the total to eight arms/legs)

My wrist is giving me problems, otherwise I'd draw it out

The smaller monsters look like a mix between the arachnids from Starship Troopers and the Flying Spaghetti Monster. The beaks are smaller than that of the arachnids though.

Once again, if I can get this wrist to cooperate, I'll try to post up a sketch

anything else i should look out for

Ya could you try to find out what the fuck the word "Cloverfield" has to do with the plot of the movie. If its really only the name of the street the studio is on in santa monica my head will explode because that is soooo lame.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I had a theory on this as well. I think that one of the first plants to come back up after an area is destroyed by bombs or fire or whatever are clovers and plants that are similar to clovers like grasses. Assuming that I'm not mistaken, since they bombed Manhattan into oblivion it would eventually be overrun with clovers and look like a field of clovers, hence case designate cloverfield for the incident.

Good comparison, but I'll add that MGP's mandibles do not articulate.

Sorry, but in the shot with Hud underneath you only see 6 limbs. He's only a hexaped.

From HUD's POV, you are right...however, he can only see the front-hind set

Overhead shots show six, I am almost positive of this. The two underneath bring the total to eight if you count them.

I only ever saw two long front limbs, two shorter back limbs- and two floppy tentacle-like limbs on his underside..
bringing the total to 6, not 8.

Where are you getting the extra set of limbs? I never saw him actually USE anything other than the front 2, and back 2.

NEW DRAWING

I don't know if the OP re drew it or someone ripped it off, but I'd say that even if it is, the detail is WAAY better :

that is the closest yet....because now the tail is correct!

hurrikenux...MGP doesn't have 6 legs...it has 2 front legs/arms and 2 on the back...thats it. the best view of that is from the helicopter

and it definitely has 6 small arms/tentacles on the underbelly at the very least...bcoz you see them all at once in the news report in the electronics store where rob gets the phone battery. Its right as she begins to talk about ther small creatures dropping of MGP.

however hurrikenux...I do agree that the small monsters resemble the arachnid warriors from starship troopers. The way they move...their legs...but most of all the way they snap their mouths...its almost beak like...like a crab pincer

but yeah...they are much smaller...and not as colourful! haha

as for the mouth of MGP...I am inclined to agree with you there. Especially when it roars.
