I have a suspicion that kaitei no mitsu is involved with MGP, but we haven't seen how or why. We did indeed see how powerful an effect it had on Jamie, and it has psychoactive effects. Even less sentient beings experience distortions of sensory input from such substances and a less complex mind's confused reaction will result in just as potent a response. Our friend MGP may not have been a mutant, but something fairly rare and unique and quite dormant. I'd bet the actions at Chuai specifically aroused MGP into action.

If this thing was alien, it came from a very earth-like planet. It seems to have no issues with an environment like ours.

I agree that its probably alien, but it seems far too robust for origins on earth or a similar environment.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Nothing of this world -- or similar -- could be so bullet-proof, rocket-proof, bomb-proof and apparently...nuke-proof

Also, would anyone have preferred computer-enhanced stop-motion? Or even regular stop-motion? I know I would've (think Harryhausen+Cloverfield.....aw, yeah, that would be kickin').

I think the Ray harryhausen style is brilliant, but its a bit dated IMHO, Jurassic park was going to be stop motion until Speilberg saw how good CGI was.

The stop motion technique just isnt as believable as CGI, but it is brilliant

EDIT: I dont think that they would be able to get some of the same camera angles with this style either

Good point about the camera angles and such; I guess I was just dreaming.

As far as stop motion not being as believable as CGI: CGI is almost always recognizable immediately and it almost never looks real. Neither does stop motion. Considering those two statements, I would prefer stop motion because it is simply...some adjective...to look at (I can't find a word that fits, but what I mean is, it makes what you are seeing seem more three-dimensional and physically real. The bugs in "Starship Troopers" were computer models animated through stop motion, but because of the computers, it looked smooth. What they need to do is use a real, physical model, then smooth it out with computers). That said, I have been fooled by stop motion before (the last scene in Aliens, some of the scenes in The Thing), so it can look pretty real.

The real deal...

From best I could describe it.. it's a giant bat-like creature. It has HUGE (but thin.. well.. schoolbus thin lol) legs and the body and head look like a bat's head. It's got some sort of bubbly breathing crap coming out of its head, but other than that it's pretty close to a giant bat with no wings. The long appendages are there like there could be wings, but it kind of stilts around on them. Pretty much looked like it was dragging itself along and tearing the heck out of things with those long legs.

Go see the movie.. it was worth the money just to see the monster and I'll be honest, although it gave me a headache, the way they filmed it did make the movie a bit scary in places. I would not suggest JJ do another movie (part 2 or whatever) in this manner, but it was an interesting method of making a movie. What needs to be done now is either do a real film version of the thing and release it with some background/etc. so we know where the monster came from, or do a second movie with the thing moving on to destroy much more than NY. This time though, the hand-held cam crap has to go. JJ could have done so much more with this movie. The movie will leave you wanting more.
