Just got a AIM from NRU SEC.

Quote:
I know you (and the other script kiddies) have been attempting to gain access to NRU resources while pretending to be a student, attempting to register as a new student, and have attempted to get passwords reset for existing students.

Cease and desist all actions Mr. Miles. Go back to school at NEIU. Go back to designing websites for mom and pop pizza joints. You wouldn't want yourself or anyone affiliated with you to get hurt.

So I have established they know about the emails sent to the profs. They know my emails is attached to a university, and that I design web sites.

But by saying: and other script kiddies, they are refering to all of us..

What can we assume by all of this

It seems that they don't want people pretending to be NRU students.

What screen name sent this to you?

nru sec was the actual screen name that actually IM'ed me.
so is the email part of the game or just the PMs telling us to pretend to be a student.

From what I can tell, the curtain is down. Someone wants you/us gone.

To me, it seems that NRU is fully aware that we are trying to pretend to be students and that they aren't going to fall for it. As far as what the PMs are trying to say, it's either that pretending to be an NRU student will be futile, or that if we are to pretend to be a student at NRU we need to do something differently or go about it from another angle, as the method we are currently using will not work.

"script kiddies" usually refers to those who run scripts from a shell account or something similar, rather than those who try to go through official channels to try to gain unauthorized access. The press release from the other day sounds more like the actions of a script kiddie. I wonder if the secretary is just fed up with their systems being poked around.

...brute forcing IS generally frowned upon in this genre as not being "fair play", especially when you have amateur PMs with limited bandwidth to spare.

I am not a script kiddie and resent being portrayed as one. And Mr. Miles, what was the exact formating of the AIM nic - AIM doesn't accept spaces. Was it NRUSEC, NRU_SEC?

AIM screen names can have spaces.

I hardly think that this is the case. Sounds like some good, old fashioned PM work -- that is, getting the university to send out a threatening message, supposedly to 'script kiddies'... thus, building our mistrust of the 'powers that be' at the school.

Either it's just a nice little interaction before the game launches (provided it hasn't launched while I was in the shower) or, if someone really did try a brute force attempt, it was a not-so-subtle warning. If the latter is the case, here is an even less-than-subtle warning:

Don't brute force. Ever. Because if you decide that you are gonna be some smart-ass with a perl script and no ambition to solve a puzzle/login the way it was intended to be solved, get the hell out of my way. Brute forcing in ARG history has always led to problems. And seeing how Acheron isn't sponsored by Nike, Coke and the letter "H", trying to force some sort of solve through scripting is only going to bring the game down. Bring down a game and suffer the wrath of an angry muthasucka in sunny Manitoba, among others.

That being said, enjoy the rest of the game! I'm chalking this interaction up to PM creativity in the downtime before launch.

darn the letter H for not sponsoring this project....they're missing out on a great opportunity to shoot up the charts and be considered in the ranks of A, B, and C.

The letter 'H' is probably too busy with its commitments to sponsoring such events as 'H'olidays, 'H'ot c'H'ocolate (mmmmm) and 'H'olland to even think about sponsoring Acheron...which is obviously sponsored by the word "Arghhhh".

(At least "Arghhh" is what springs to mind every time I try and figure out what's going on) Confused
