Several sequel ideas I'd like to see...

I'm all for a sequel to this just because I think there's so much more story. If this were a real event, imagine how many videos we'd all be gobbling up on YouTube (provided we weren't the ones running for their lives). That being said, here's a few ideas I'd like to see acted on:

1. An alternate version of the same story we just watched, preferably from the POV of a low-ranking military person. Seeing the story from the point of view of a National Guard reservist being mobilized would be hella cool, plus it would give Goddard plenty of opportunities to drop us juicy bits of exposition regarding the hows and whys that the gov't has been able to figure out.

2. This is, most likely, the least likely to happen and may not be suitable for a feature film, but I'd still like to see it (possibly as a viral for the sequel or the DVD release). Basically, I want to see a story that addresses "What the hell is going on with the rest of the country right now?" How are the people in suburban Indiana, Los Angeles, and everywhere reacting? Specifically, I'd like to see something with Rob's mother or anyone who has family/friends in the danger zone. Admittedly, it would be hard to tell a story where the majority of the action would be watching a character watch TV/search the web for information, but I think if done properly, it could be quite engaging.

3. Call me a sap, but I like to think that there's the slightest chance that Rob & Beth (or at least one of them) pulled through. Make it like Halloween 2 and pick up where the first movie left off. Again, gives the filmmakers a great chance to give us more answers re: MGP and maybe we even get to see him (provided he survived) tearing shit up during the day!

Just some thoughts... Lemme know what you think.

I'm going to put a spoiler around this, just because if you don't feel like reading my opinion, you don't have to. All I can say is:

After seeing the movie, I wonder how there can be a sequel.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I mean, lets just say for the sake of argument, The Guys behind Cloverfield are "incapable" of making a classic Hollywood money-maker sequel, a la Blair Witch 2, American Psycho 2... etc.

How do you top this?

Doing a sequel that's essentially the same movie from another POV will never fly, IMO. The reviews will be "I liked it better when it was just called Cloverfield." If some reviewers couldn't grasp the fact that this was not just Blair Witch with a "real" monster, and subsequently panned the movie as being everything we've seen before, what hope does a carbon-copy sequel have?

I really hope Reeves, Goddard, and Abrams are creative enough to think of something that would not only top this movie in cinematography, but also in story. This is already a story that is designed to not absolutely need backstory or even a proper "this is what happened afterward" ending.

You know?

Long time lurker here, just wanted to post my thoughts.

I think that if the sequel is the same time line from a different POV it will turn the unique aspect of the movie into a gimmick. I mean, I like the idea of seeing the event from the same angle, I just dont know how they can keep it fresh. Enough people dont really understand the point of the movie as is (being more about the little people than the big monster) and a sequel that does the same would only scream cash-cow. Being from the POV of a solider would be cool but might seem weird, its kinda hard to fight and shoot (film) at the same time.

Personally I think the perfect sequel would be to come out of the frame created by the format of the first movie and show the military analyzing and talking about the footage. It would be quite a spectacle if they used that to show all sorts of snippets of data from the attack. So they could create a collage that takes maybe, news footage from the rest of the world, then pictures/ video from other survivors, then answer some questions by interviewing survivors or showing news footage of the Chuai station, etc... Basically wrap up the story without doing what every other movie does by showing the planes bombing MGP, him making a nasty noise, and then dying, then end.

Cloverfield didnt follow the standard linear monster movie path and that was why it was so interesting. I think showing people trying to figure out what happened would just make the story seem that much more real. I mean look at every major history event from WW2 to JFK to 9/11. Yea we know the main story enough to be satisfied with it and have some closure yet there are still unanswered questions. And lets face it, this is a JJ Abraham movie, nothing is ever going to be 100% answered.

I think they could have added another 30 minutes to the movie to wrap up some of big questions that everybody is wanting answered. I mean. someone found the footage, right? When? Who? My opinion is that they could have made this movie complete and then if there were cries for a sequel, gone into a back story or a godzilla-like thing with scientists and every-stuff!

Could anyone see if there is a sauce to prove this true?

Why do that, when you can sell admission to another movie which looks into that stuff?

Because some of us don't have the time or the money to keep going back again and again! But thats the mentality of the "Rich gettin richer, and the poor gettin poorer!"

This was posted on Yahoo news.

http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/justthefacts_cloverfield.html

The 5th item on the list mentions some details about a possible sequel. Not sure how they'd make that work though. They should film an extra camera like it says and add it to the DVD and make the special edition DVD like a case file full of different clips and info.

I think that many people would be turned off by a sequel that had the same style, different cast. Instead, I see the sequel to Cloverfield working like the sequels to Godzilla, in which scientists and officials follow up on the events that the monster dished out in the first installment.

My guess, is the second film will, if it is straight-forward, begin with a military officer's voice placed over footage seen from the first film and other helicopters present. The voice would say something like, "At approximately 7:15 PM, May yadda yadda, the specimen known as [insert prototypical name] rose from the New York harbor, and proceeded into the city.."

From there, I don't know if the second movie would be about the hunt, or Tagruato getting THEIR due-and-proper, or what... I have no idea.

Trouting is only for making a new thread that is about the same subject matter as a thread already in existance. You can't get trouted for posting anything inside an already existing thread Very Happy

A sequel would be nice, but they would have to be very, very careful.

Once thing wrong and J.J. gets shot by some Cloverfield fanatic.

Er... that would really suck.

I would cry and kick and scream and giggle.

Anyway, I'm up for a sequel, but not from the handheld style same time of attack type thing. I want something equally new and fresh.

I don't think it'll do that well, though. It seems like the whole world generally hates Cloverfield, but we never get that on these boards.
