my only gripe is the abrupt ending. i was hoping for a last shot at the city with the monster or something. and i'm not sure if they'll be a sequel. i guess it just depends on how many liked it, and if the studio thinks a sequel will make enough off of it. i also wanted to say that even though the movie is rated PG-13, i thought it was o.k. for a little younger group. i went to see it so i could rate it for my kids who are 7,8,and 11. they love monster movies, i think i'll take them to see it, although it might be a little slow in some parts for them.

I was just angry that Beth started to run after having been knocked out for hours with a pole in her shoulder, I was like WTF?!

I know huh.

Everyone in the theater, including me, went "Oh HELL no!" when she opened her eyes.

It might have been a bit realistic, until they all survived the heli crash.

We went "Oh HELL. NO." when that happened.

two things:

first, about midway through the movie i realized that because it was filmed in the first person, unless they threw a helluva curveball at the end, the movie would have to end either with destruction or the battery running out; either way, i knew people were going to be disappointed.

second, a friend said it would have been cool if the movie ended with the camera following a nuke flying through the sky and then a flash of white light.

Eh...their adrenaline was running at full power.
I don't have a problem with Beth and Rob running like that.

... No problems with the ending, except that I wasn't ready for it to be over (d*mn you J.J., you brilliant evil genius, you..! Twisted Evil ), and I'm already ready for more (did I mention d*mn you, J.J. Abrams..?). My hub didn't care for it, but he's not a fan of horror-themed 'moc doc' anyway - as for me, "Cloverfield" ROCKS..! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy ...

what ever happened to suspending disbelief?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
even still. the timeframe between the crash and when they woke up still alive is unclear. what if they crashed, passed out, and woke up 10 minutes later. you're telling me that big ass monster in an empty city with no military attacking him (for the moment) couldnt stumble upon central park in time to curiously come across the only human left in new york standing in the open grass?
[/spoiler]

Suspension of belief is what you give when they offer 300 foot creatures and buglike parasites. But in the context of their film, they tried to maintain a "this is real if it wasn't fake" sort of framework, and even with their virtal marketing campaign. So it just seemed really weird for the ending. It's as if it was ONLY put there so you could see the first-person view of getting munched by a monster. Cool stuff, but beyond unrealistic. I said I loved the movie tho, I'm afforded a few quibbles. :p

MGP was headed towards Central Park just like the chopper was when the bombs knocked him down, and he swatted the chopper down. It takes a little while to get to Central Park, it is in the middle of the city after all. It's also the widest most open area he'd been in since walking ashore, and all of the sudden there's nobody assaulting him. It's likely he'd take a breather because it was just opportune. Notice he wasn't in full rage when he saw Hud and didn't just lash out like he had been all night. He did however have that little guy with an object pointing at him, like all the soldiers had been. Good reason to get a little agitated. He already knew the thing holding that little object was a good snack. All the reason in the world to bite.

As for timing, they were a couple of minutes late. I can easily see a 20-30 minute knockout after the crash, during which the now unmolested MGP in his new free ranging space can settle a bit. He could've been standing there fairly quietly and with them worrying about getting out of chopper wreckage on fire (they did say it could explode after they dragged Rob out) they might not notice until as you saw they turned around...
And BOOM! Guess who's there?

And ajspring - a shot like you speak of would've broken the POV. It's clear JJ wasn't going to do that, and I'm glad he didn't. It kept the plausibility high.

I hate to say it, but you were watching a movie about a giant creature (sea/space/otherwise) detroying a city... did you expect some rediculous level of scientific acuracy?

couldent of been a nuke, from all the movies we saw, we know a nuke brightens the day, makign the screen white, and is so loud that you don
t hear anything till like 5 seconds later, Was just a ton of bombs and missiles, probably like 300+ of them, all out once. And how would the film be recovered in the same spot/who would go in there after a nuke goes off Neutral

Unrealistic: Not compatible with reality or fact.

Cloverfield is about a unknown monster rampaging in New York, I think if any of us say "unrealistic" it wouldn't be fair to the whole movie. I thought the ending was great, better than any other monster movie, which the typical ending is

A. Monster dies, everybody is happy.
B. Monster spawns off a little baby monster.
C. Monster gets taken to a island to live wonderfully..

But no, from the looks of Cloverfield, all the main people could've died from the movie and the monster could still be causing hell. It was a perfect ending, not some happy raw raw movie.

I can disprove the nuke theory with two well placed links.

First of all, at the beginning of the film, it said that the recording was a SD card found at the area formerly known as central park.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SD_card

A nuclear attack would create a Electromagnetic Pulse
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_pulse
That would essentially wipe the memory of the SD card.

If it were analogue film, it would probably be a different story.

I'm agreeing there, and dropping nukes on you're own territory would just be plain stupid.

I think that there are two monsters, yeah it can seem unlikely but one thing I noticed about the monster at the end of the movie (I've only seen it once, and I watched it disregarding what little of the ARG I knew at the time) that it does seem rather small, and yeah it's hard to get the scale when there isnt anything to compare it too.

But, what happened to all the parasites? Why weren't there any on it? If it IS the same monster they could've all died from the bombing run (considering they all do sit on the outside of the monster). If it is different monster, maybe it isn't host to them? If it had the ability to spawn parasites, why didn't it send them after Rob and Beth? Actually, when I watched the movie and saw them running for the bridge in central park for shelter, I thought for sure there were prolly going to be some hiding under there...I really don't know why.

OR maybe other theories are true and it only really cared about HUD (because of slusho) and so didn't bother with the others, but if it did care about HUD it sure didn't play with him for long. I kinda trailed off there but yeah, where the hell are the parasites? The (possibly) second monster doesn't look like it was particularily big enough to even hold many parasites on it.

i can see them being knocked off by the bombing runs. so we saw the 'naked' version of MGP?
