i have a sanyo hd cam my self that is also only recording on sd card
not that panasonic crap they use in the movie Smile

7 hour ist the time window of the events, not the time he is recording

it is hd recording h.264 for 1h 20 min on a 2 gb sd card

a 4 gb card max 15 euro / 21 $ (2h 40min)

a 8 gb sd card round about 30 euro /45 $ (5h 20min)

where is that "extreme expensive"???????

if youre gonna think so deep into that sd card/tape matter

think about something thousand times more important

whats about the battery????

everybody who also owns one of this stylish hand-sized
camcorders knows what i am talking about

the battery is NEVER NEVER NEVER matching the capacity of your sd card

-7 hour time window
-always ready to film
-usage of the cam light

even with energy saving set to max
(lcd screen off after 15 sec without cam usage......)

3 or even 4 fully charged battery packs minimum for a 8gb sd card Very Happy

To save myself that puzzle, I just assumed that Hud grabbed batteries when Rob did.

Hmm thats cool... i got an Xacti C6 as well... the awesomest sanyos around!!! and I know its off topic but where on earth do you buy a 8G sd card for that kinda cheap??? In hawaii were lucky to get a decent 2G for $50 bucks...

oh yeah very true the battery to "cardability" ratio is very important!!

I just assumed that the characters use of the word "tape" was common shorthand that many people use. A friend of mine has one of those TiVo recorders, but she always says that she "taped" a show.

I assumed the same. I wouldn't expect Hud to say, "hey guys, I SD'd the monster!"

That was my thought, they couldn't even show the camera in the film so there isn't anyway for us to know what the camera was, in their reality or whatever, doesn't matter that we know irl.

Anyway, even if it is an inconsistency, it doesn't surprise or really matter to me, films are plagued with inconsistencies and continuity errors, even the most well-loved movies.

Maybe I am confused but the movie I saw which was an unedited recording was only 81 minutes long....not 7 hours. Obviously HUD did not record the entire 7 hours. Wink

2gb for 50$ omfg thats really expensive

here in germany sometimes they sell sd cards in the supermarkets besides the tomatoes 2 for 1 2x2gb for 25 euros /36 $

even 16gb sdhc here in germany for 80$ compared to your 2gb 50$

but dont be jealous

for eg the prices for cpu or grafic cards are just crap

they chance the dollar sign with the euro Sad

means 500 dollar grafic cards costs 500 euro here

that are 730 dollar

so whats more worse? Very Happy

and @ bill the movie is 81 min but the events take place on a 7 hour time window means 7 hours of beeing ready to film

You can find the SD cards on sale at OfficeDepot a lot. I purchase 2 gig SD cards there at $19 every couple weeks for work. Geeks.com is another place for very cheap memory cards.

I need a new HD camcorder, I will defiantly check into the Sanyo HD cam.

I also agree that everyone says taped for anything recorded. It is a habit we have gotten into after all these years.

Just to throw a little wrench into everything here:

I have a camcorder that uses both SD cards and Mini DV tapes. So there could be the possibility of the tape playing while the SD card is stopped. I think this is highly unlikely, but I figured this should be considered.

Additionally, could it be possible that the Beth/Rob footage wasn't filmed over at all and that the editor of this footage somehow spliced this stuff in?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Of course he didn't, we saw Hawk doing the beginning and Rob do the end.

Usually the cameras with both media use the SD for stills and the tape for video, more so on the older models than the newer ones.

The slide at the beginning of the film says:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
DOCUMENT #USGX-8810-B467
DIGITAL SD CARD
MULTIPLE SIGHTINGS OF CASE DESIGNATE
"CLOVERFIELD"

One can easily explain the confusion:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Since it says "document" instead of "exhibit", we need merely assume that we are watching an SD card recording to which the tape was transferred.

to tape = to record

in modern vernacular the word 'tape' means to record, or is a generic term for media on which stuff is recorded.

I have a tivo, and we always say 'did you tape that show', ' i have to set it to tape' etc.

The fact that anyone says 'tape' in no way means that the media was magnetic tape.

Yea, about the battery life, he only filmed like... about 74 minutes, with the flashlight on for about... 1-2 mins?

That seems reasonable for a new battery.

Having seen it a second time now, I'd like to note that there could've been charging time between the initial shots as the party is being set up. Also keep in mind that all the 'flashback' footage is not going to impact the batteries.

The light was on for more than 1-2 minutes I think, but Hud wasn't recording the whole time they were hiking the tracks either. Not too powerful a light on that camera either. My mom's older DV camera with tape (and hence motors which eat power quickly) can do as long as the 'current' day's events without problems.
