One more day like that and it has already made a profit.

With an estimated $50 million plus for the weekend, it's safe to say Paramount is flipping every green light they can for the sequel(s). I wouldn't be surprised if they film a few at once (as in Matrix 2 and 3 and LOTR).

I'm glad for everyone invloved that it is opening big. Considering the budget, no matter what this will be a succesful venture all the way around.
I do think there will definitely be slight dropoff from Friday to Saturday though since because it was an event movie a lot of people rushed out to see it immediately on Friday.
Also I wouldn't be surprised if it takes a major hit next weekend as the word of all the people complaining about nausea gets around. Not to mention it is just naturally one of those movies you see opening weekend.
Still though, that's a damn impressive opening for a movie not many people knew much about.

If Friday was $18M
I see Saturday topping $20M - Friday afternoon people are working and all day Saturday will be packed as well as usual Saturday viewing.

Actually...it looks like Cloverfield made $16.75m (according to Boxoffice mojo).

The Saturday numbers will be much lower than Friday, since Fri included the midnight showings.
I expect a $45m 4-day weekend.

Of course this will change movie marketing as well. Like what MTV did for reality television, this will like lead to many new ARG/Viral marketing promotions for new flicks.
Let's just hope they don't all suck after this...
P.S. I bet the sequel has already been green lighted, because word-of-mouth and good reviews have all but guaranteed this will be a "hit."
