[SPOILERS] My Cloverfield Review from Philadelphia
Definite Spoilers

Saw it a screening tonight in Philadelphia.
Spoilers ahead, so if you don't want the movie ruined don't read this. This is the regular guy review and you've probably already heard most of this in earlier reviews, but here it goes:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
5 people running from a monster. One of them has a camcorder. It's all told YouTube style when the military finds the video tape.

The monster looks like a giant ape mixed with a lizard mixed with a fish with fangs. It has a long tail. It's really lanky and greyish green. It has really long arms that bend backwards and it walks like a combination of an ape on all fours and a bat walking on its wings. It's about 35 stories tall.

The monster scratches its back on a skyscraper and little flea things come off, but they are really vicous when they land. They are dog sized and look like spider crabs. They bite people and then the people's stomachs swell like a full tick and burst open. Pretty sweet.

The main characters are pretty likeable. The camera guy is hillarious. There's a love story which is kind of lame. The main character's brother's girlfriend has amazing tits and you spend a lot of time watching her jiggling them running around.

Least impressive was the monster which kind of sucks. I really wasnt impressed with the cgi.
Monster gets a 9 for it's overall bad assness but a 6 for its cgi. It's all about the details on cgi. It just didnt feel right.

But overall it was as believable as a homemade monster attack movie could be. People at the theater had mixed reactions. The old people there did not like the shaky camera technique. Some guy said he felt sick after. But if you play a lot of video games you should be used to it. The girls were scared. I jumped when the monster attacked the helicopter. The camera guy gets eaten by the monster and it you get a feel of what it's like to be eaten by a 35 story monster.

Also, I've heard confusion about the ending. It seemed very simple...the military nuked Manhattan including Rob & Beth. The soldiers kept repeating how the government was going lay down the "heavy hammer" or something and then there was a bit of a countdown and then sirens went off and then BOOM EXPLOSION END OF STORY.

What's interesting about this movie is I feel I got more out of than others at the theater becasue of my knowledge of the ARG, but regual people don't know jack shit about this movie. My brother and my girfriend for instance, both avid movie fans, didnt even know it was a monster movie. They thought it was a film about a terrorist attack.

Also regarding the ARG and it's non-existence in the film...people outside the theater were clearly upset they was no exposition on the creature's background in the film. I heard multiple people saying variations of: "But were did the monster come from? They never explained it at all"

I would have liked a little something besides Rob's brother's Slusho shirt. I think Bad Robot is really underestimating the intelligence of the general audience and is also dismissing the ARG fans. I'm not saying explain it all away, but how bout a little somethin somethin. And these were girls with no expectation besides being scared asking for this.

And I think another 10 million spent on the creature would have helped. It's a go see and it felt like a ride at Universal Studio but could have used more and a better monster and more Slusho.

Edit - Added big tag for consistency, but thanks for mentioneing spoilers Smile - MikeyJ

I was reading the review saying "Yup... yup... sweet... sounds tight... yup... cool..." and then I saw that part and found it amazingly funny for no apparent reason. Rock on.

Ive seen most of the pics on here and this is the closest, BUT
- the head needs to be rounder (although when you see it head on it looks very narrow like you have it)

-the arms need to be much skinnier and a bit longer (the elbows need to be over the head).

- the superflous arms you have are too functional looking. The monsters are more sickly, dangly and lower in the body

- the sacks on the head are bright red

- the monster is VERY SKINNY, this is a bit too compact.

The other guy who saw the movie said it didn't really have a "monkey-like" face to it.

This tells me you just don't every really see the monster.

One question...is there ever a time when the monster stands up straight, stares into the camera and screams? I mean a good long shot?
If not then I don't care if he tears up half of Manhattan, it just isn't a monster movie. If I change my mind and not see this in the theaters, the lack of such a shot will be the reason.

Genre reinventions, characters, whatever...I don't care.

Is this a MONSTER movie? Monster as in Rawwwwwwwwwwwwwr!!!!

You see the monster a lot, but very quickly and from a single angle each time. Every time you see it it looks slightly different which is another reason people are having a hard time describing it.

When you see the face head on for a few seconds at the end it looks like a narrow sharp fanged fish mouth. But other times its a super round head, but small for its body.

What the movie, and its treatment of the monster, reminded me most of was a Universal ride, like Jaws. Peaceful then MONSTER LEG RUN! then quiet and then MONSTER FACE RUN!

The bridge scene really felt like this. He knocks the bridge down, with all the characters on it, and there's super mayhem but you never see the monster in the scene. Like when Jaws arracks the boat at Universal you just see a fin and then the boat rocks and you're supposed to imagine the rest.

Lots of quick and cool shots but almost forced like- here it comes but we can't look because we already had a shot of him. The two best shots of him are:

- In the helicopter the military pounds it with a direct hit and you can se him fall and Hud is screaming, "Fuck yeah that's what I'm talkin bout!" and out of the smoke his face pops up right next to the camera and swats them down. Very nice.

- Hud looks up and sees the monster from toe to head and they just stare at each other a few moments before he gets chomped.

Also, the little flea monsters were really effective. I thought I would hate them, but theyre cool. Similar in nature to the spiders in The Mist but much better and scarier in their presentation.

Does the title have any relevence whatsoever in the movie? Is there any actual reason to call this movie Cloverfield...Or did JJ and Co. just cop out?

Cloverfield meant absolutely nothing to the movie and as far as I could tell it meant nothing in the ARG.

I really hope to god they didnt name it Cloverfield just because that's the exit ramp for the producer's office and it would be an inside joke for them.

Like, "So we need a name" "
"How bout Cloverfield? That's our street!"
"Yeah? You don't think it's kind of arrogant and little too insidey for the audience?"
"The audience won't know the difference"
