Pre-movie monster footsteps?

OK, I'm trying to figure out if I was just imagining things, or if my theater was actually doing something cool here.

I went to see the movie earlier this afternoon. About 10 minutes before the movie was supposed to start, while the screen was still showing theater advertisements and whatnot, I heard what sounded like a very heavy, monster-sized, footstep come from the speakers, but it sounded like it was far off. In other words, it seemed like it was coming out of the speakers in my theater, but was made to sound like it was far off. Then a minute or so later, there was another one, with an actual roar with it. The footsteps then continued with one every minute or so up until the trailers began to roll.

It was quiet enough not to overshadow the adverts that were on the screen, but my friend also heard it, although he wasn't sure what it was.

Now, with the spacing and the amount of bass in the sound, it sounded exactly like a large monster walking in from the distance. I'm sure it was not just bleed-through from a neighboring screen since I heard absolutely no other sounds except for the rythmic walking, and I was in the only screen that was showing Cloverfield in that particular theater. Plus, my theater is a pretty nice one that I've never had a problem with being able to hear movies from adjacent screens.

So my question is, did anybody else have a similar experience at their showing? Or was I just reading too much into what I heard and my ming was playing tricks with me?

We had those at our theatre too, but it was different from how you described them - Ours were super-loud, more frequent and happened in a short amount of time.

OK, that make me feel more sane. See, I thought it was plenty loud, too. And it might have been more frequent than 1 or 2 every minute. What had me thinking that it was really quiet was that nobody else in the theater seemed to notice it, and even my friend was doubtful that it wasn't just from a neighboring movie.

Glad to know I wasn't imagining it. And by the way, it was a really awesome touch for this movie.

Yeah, I thought it was a great idea too.

Nobody noticed it? My friends were able to hear it easily.

Yep, I remember hearing those. People expected a monster to burst on the scene because of it, and it was a lovely tease if you ask me.

There wasn't anything else showing in the theater I was attending.

Believe I heard that as well
No other boom movies at the theatre

I noticed that myself, I wonder if that's a pain the ass to implement or not? Guess not if my poopsburg cinema did it.

I believe they only have 1 digital "movie room" at the cineplex.

That's what that was? I saw that movie three times yesterday and kept thinking that the movie was starting, especially right before the Star Trek teaser. I didn't hear the roar, just the footsteps and kept thinking it was in whatever movie was playing. Duh!

On my second viewing, different theater, different city even - same thunderous footsteps.
