If the bridge collapsed on them, it would have protected them from the bombs. Granted, they would have had a couple broken bones. And by a couple, I mean several.

"It's interesting -- you turn the clocks back 10 years to a time where the Internet was not so readily available and where you couldn't find out anything you wanted to know about a movie by a couple of key strokes, and that's what J.J. wanted to do with this," Vogel says. "Pull back some of the information, and that's what he did. It created a feeding frenzy."
Isn't this the marketing plan of Blair Witch?
Although Blair Witch pretended to be "real" and didn't allow any information about the actors to be given out by anyone, including the studio, so no one could tell if they were actors or students or dead or alive. I know my niece was convinced that Blair Witch was real, at least in the beginning. I think the reaction of audiences who are too young to remember what it was like when Blair Witch was released is quite different than the reaction of those who do remember it. I think the same thing will happen, over time with Cloverfield. People will know what the monster looks like and how it ends, so the impact can not be the same as the first frenzy there is now.
In contrast was clearly always a movie. Despite the claims, there was information leaked while they were shooting, including the final scene with Rob and Beth.

The more recent TV spots probably had a lot more to do with that "frenzy" than Abrams' clandestine marketing plan, but the amount of hype generated by Paramount Pictures within the geek community shouldn't be discounted if it delivers at the box office.
I agree with this. The marketing heavily relied on the power of the images of the film - not the backstory of any of the characters.
Quote:
"They definitely left it obscure enough that you don't quite know," Vogel says of his character's fate. "There are really only two people you can tell really bit the farm and the rest of us are just kind of there."
This sounds more like an actor looking for another payday/job than solid information from someone knowledgeable about the film.
