[META] Attn: Mods Can we get some thread-locking action going on? We have people posting nearly duplicate threads.
Seriously, it's getting incredibly annoying. People just go straight to "New Post" without bothering to scroll or use the "Search".

I agree with you completely, and I'm not trying to be a dick... but the mods have sat by and watched this since day one, and I don't think they're going to start modding now just because you ask. The time to do something was when it was a manageable problem.

I understand the whole kind-hearted trout thing, but can't the mods just lock those threads after they've been trouted??
PS. They seem to all be MIA since the movie opened. I guess they've all given up?

Hiya Ghidra,
we're not going to lock threads. Use of trout (always accompanied by a link to the relevant thread) to point out to people that what they've posted has already been posted will cut down on these things. Not posting in a thread, as will happen with trouted threads, will cause it to rapidly drop off the top of the forum. No need to lock.
Searching is wholeheartedly encouraged (though it's not always successful - as I know myself )

The worst part is when they call you "elitist" because you know how to use the search function. I apologize for knowing how to use it correctly and I have the patience to look before posting hastily. I think the mods are being overwhelmed with these threads and are trying as hard as they can but most of the time they let them sink into the forums.

Nope - not overwhelmed at all. And definitely not sitting back and watching stuff.
We might moderate in a hands off way, but it certainly isn't passive. Duplicate threads soon disappear, they're also tagged when we get the time so that you can just ignore them. This process is speeded up if you guys draw our attention to them by trouting and linking to the duplicate thread. I'm happy for you to PM me with trouts too if you spot some I've missed.

to peoples defense all of this is very exciting and is hard to sift through all the random chatter to find good-hard info/speculation.

Thanks for the response, Mikeyj.
I guess I have a heavier hand than some people.
PS. The forum is running much faster now, I've noticed. Or maybe it's just my T1 at work.

SkitteryMocha, spot on - it is exciting and hard to sift through chatter (nothing wrong with chatter mind )
Euchre put together an excellent guide on how to make the most out of the search function: linky in case that helps you or others with their forum-delving.
It is going faster - phew! Makes modding much easier (sorry, it's not your T1, though I'm sure it's very shiny )
We've had an influx of new people with the film's release, but it doesn't take long for them to catch on to the unforum's (extremely natty) style. Especially when those that know the ropes are also welcoming, explain stuff and generally guide in the right direction.
cheers

You can trout yourself by editing the first post and changing the title to include [TROUT].

I'm just posting to say that I'm not mia. We're paying attention.
And about not locking threads, we have a philosophy that you don't need to lock threads to facilitate a conversation. And this subforum has shown that philosophy is successful.

NICE!
Not sure if trouting exactly works cross forum like that though, not at that level (Cloverfield subforum to Cloverfield subforum it does). I'll add the tag if that proves to be correct.
As far as mods being around, I spent hours after returning from the midnight showing going over the forums, and in the following days as well. We don't lock threads, this is a directive and has it's reasons defined. Whether or not you or I disagree, this is the current policy and therefore we are bound to it. I don't see it as enough of a problem to foster or engage in public debate about it.
Being this forum is speculative in nature, so there will be disagreements and many threads created to discuss various elements involved in various combinations. Sometimes it's hard to say if a subject is different enough to warrant the application of the 'trout' concept. In such cases, multiple threads with apparently the same topical basis may exist and may experience cross-posting where the subject matter tends to overlap. This is only a 2 dimensional linear threaded model, so we can't integrate it in any more refined a way.
I think one thing that causes such frustrations is that trouting is supposed to have a different outcome than it often does. When a new user especially is trouted, they tend to go silent when others are celebrating a trout in an 'in your face' sort of way. A more tenured member may take this well when they are trouted, but new members would only be discouraged or offended.
What should happen when a person is trouted is that they and everyone seeing the topic should carry their information and discussion to the existing thread. This buoys up older threads which may have a subject matter which bears revisiting or might benefit from new information. The OP of the trout should take that information and repost it in the thread pointed to, and thus bring the thread back up, and allow the trouted thread to drop. If the trout is a post in a thread, it's just a matter of carrying the information to the other thread. If this was the result of most troutings, I suspect locking of trout threads wouldn't be seen as such a potential detriment to the dialog on the forums.
Referring back to the initial part of this post, I'm going to CC most of this to the thread linked - as an excellent example.
