Apparently some of you haven't followed all of the series over time. There are still people enamored of 'classical art and culture', of which car culture is one. Tom Paris on Voyager restored a '69 Camaro in the holodeck, and drove it (yes, synthetically but accurately), and in another episode called "The 37s" they beam aboard a '30s era pickup which he manages to start (and scare and confuse Tuvok, no small achievement to pull off on a Vulcan). What this doesn't jive with is the original series' episode "A Piece of the Action" where Kirk can't drive a '30s car to save his life - although to be fair, back then many cars did not use the modern arrangement of controls (anyone ever driven a Model T?). I don't think there's any problem with the plausibility of a collector having a usable original - or by then, certainly an excellent replica - of a Sting Ray 'Vette. Most of the '30s street rods you see today have no parts from the '30s at all, and there are more fiberglass replica Cobras than there are originals - but how many of you could really tell the difference?

I am reminded of the Rush song Red Barchetta about now...

Oh, and nobody rides around New York in a horse drawn carriage that'd look as at home in 1808, do they?
(Like uh, the one seen wandering around in Cloverfield?)

You are absolutely right Euchre, some of us haven't kept up with the series. I have a passing interest in the shows, but I only watch them when I notice them on the TV. I don't actively seek them out.

Actually, I am more of a Star Wars fan (hence the screenname I chose. Lord, I wish I could change that thing to something less goofy. Laughing), and am more familiar with that universe. But still, far from an expert.

Anywho, back on topic: I didn't know that about the cars on Star Trek. Maybe there is nothing weird going on then... Wink

Doh! I had been looking at all of the swirly special effects for something time travelly.

Although that would actually be pretty badass, Kirk was born in Iowa in 2233. But that makes a very valid point; how did a car from 1965 survive in fairly pristine and driving condition all that time (and even better, why the heck would anyone even know how to drive it)?

They can build starships with an apparently infinite supply of raw materials in record time... You don't think they can keep a Corvette in driving condition? Wink

(ETA: I thought the Corvette was a '67, but I could be wrong Smile )

As for being able to drive it: for God sakes, man... it's KIRK! Is there anything he CAN'T do?!?

Besides, my seven year old son can probably drive stick shift better than I could. Being able to reach the pedals is another matter...

That's the easy, naive answer, not the answer of a real trekker, or trekkie. Razz

As for the time travel speculation:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Leonard Nimoy is in this film. Old Spock will be traveling back through time to help stop some time traveling Romulans.

Also, two "easter eggs" with user names and passwords required are on the official site now. Just search through the comments here for things related to easter eggs on how to get to them:

http://trekmovie.com/2008/11/17/new-star-trek-trailer-online-official-site-updated/

Basically, wallpapers of Nero (the villain) and Uhura. But, apparently you need a user/pass. No one on TrekMovie.com seems to have cracked it. Who knows, could lead to something else entirely.

Kinda Off-Topic
Slusho

For all of you Slusho 7's in here, a new review at AICN of a 30 minute screening in NY mentions Slusho:

Quote:
In the first clip, we meet Kirk at a futuristic bar (with Slusho mix for sale and menus containing moving pictures!) hitting on Uhura with a terribly ugly alien sitting in between them at the bar, just chilling out.

No idea if it's actually Slusho or a Slusho type thing...

To this I can only say...

Jar-Jar Binks

Twisted Evil

I think we are going to see a LOT of Slusho in anything Abrams and his associates create. Get used to it.

What, who, you mean the Jamaican bunny alien? Laughing Hey, at least he was supposed to be the comic relief. Kirk was the main character. (Don't get me wrong, he was still pretty http://isitbeertimeyet.ca/gallery2/d/775-2/kirk.jpg)

If Captain Kirk knew what you guys were saying in here he would come in, rip his shirt off, and proceed to kick the snot out of each of you. When he finished he would then seduce and ravish your significant other. Leaving, he would turn and give an insightful monologue about you and your defeat, and then beam out after having bested you in every way possible.

Lets avoid all that shall we?

Shocked RESPECT THE KIRK. Shocked

Shirtless Captains and Insightful Monologues are no match for a good blaster at your side... Cool

He'd rip off his shirt and then seduce and ravish another man?!?! I think I might keep it up just to be able to video tape that happening...then of course make millions selling it off to fanboys. Razz

@Jedi_Geek Hehe, that's always how I thought of JarJar. Like we're supposed to be evolved monkeys or something, he reminds me of an evolved rabbit...from Jamaica who fried his brain from smoking too much. Laughing

That would be quite the scandal, would it not? I can see the headlines now...

James Tiberius Kirk, famed captain of the Starship Enterprise, bares all in steamy male-on-male sex tape!!! Star Trek fanboys shocked, titillated by spectacle!!!

Well obviously if you're a lady Kirk would forego the above fighting and skip straight to the seducing...of you.

Come on, are you going to tell me you could deny this man?
