NoMoreParents.com: viral ad or future ARG trailhead?

What is http://www.nomoreparents.com? It seems viral ad-esque, but it's hard to tell.

Notes:
The domain is registered through DomainsByProxy

A full listing of the random(?) images that flash on the main page can be found in the /flares directory.

The source reveals strange text about solar flares, and links to sites about killing children/infanticide:

Quote:
<!--the phone's dead the power's out I don't know if we should just sit herehttp://messybeast.com/kill_kit.htm -->

<meta NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="victor and I are going to stay here until the police come or the fire department or till the fuckinghttp://www.ratbehavior.org/infanticide.htmneighbors put their brains back in">

<meta NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="they're backhttp://www.bridgeman.co.uk/search/view_image2.asp?image_id=188647 inside">

</head>
wake me up when you get home? I heard the solar flares are going to be great tonight_

<!--http://www.pomc.org/ -->

<!--you told me mom andhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filicide dad ran away-->

The site was found through a blog post written by Asher Sarlin (a web cartoonist). No, I'm not shilling. That would be dumb.

PS: also posted at Ask MeFi

PPS: I know I haven't been around in awhile. sorry. Please allow me to reintroduce myself: I'm danman_d.

In case you hadn't noticed, towards the bottom left hand corner there is text that says "spring 2007" when highlighted.

Vaguely reminds me, from the text posted in the original post combined with the url, uf an old(er) young adult book series "Countdown". All the adults die (hence nomoreparents?), etc. Can't recall if there were solar flares or not. And I don't know what did it, 'cause it's been years (like around early 2000) since I read any of it, and I never finished the series. One difference(?) is that it was New Years Eve/Day (midnight) 1998/9, iirc, when it all started.

Suffice to say, I'm at least watching this, if not taking part (if it fills out into a fullblown ARG).

I dunno, but to me, the fact that there are 12 .gif files (12 .gifs, 12 books) and the mention of God in one (God vs. demon, and the description I read says that the book series has something to do with a demon), really makes me think 'Countdown' even more. But that could just be me getting my hopes up, since I loved those books when I could find them.

The websites in the source are all about death of children (or baby rats) or parents killing their own offspring.

The comments in the .gif files are interesting

What if you had to pay for your crimes against the earth?
What if you could take anything you wanted?
What if the sky was orange?
What if God abandoned -->you?<--
What if your video games were real?
What if we were the monsters?
What if yo
What if there were no more cellphon
What if your SAT scores were irrelevant?
What if god abandoned
What if there was NO ONE to TELL YOU WHAT to do?
WHAT IF THIS WAS THE LAST WEB PAGE YOU EVER LOOKED AT?

This is really interesting!

Some of my opinions on the statements:

Quote:
What if your video games were real?

I'm not sure if this is just hinting at apocalyptic themes, but it stuck out to me as something like a TINAG statement, hinting that this could be an ARG. I dunno, though.

Quote:

What if God abandoned -->you?<--
What if we were the monsters?

This really demonizes the children--like it's possibly their fault the adults all died/disappeared. Maybe the children are killing the adults, and that's what the adults need to kill the kids (the source code message). Just wild speculation.

Quote:

What if your SAT scores were irrelevant?
What if there was NO ONE to TELL YOU WHAT to do?

These three seem to be saying that this 'whatever-it-is' is aimed at teens--people who are cellphone-obsessed, nervous over SATs, and in need of guidance.

---

Sorry if this was obvious. Just wanted to note my opinions. Smile

I think this is a fair call. The series of 12 books (January-December) definitely has a hefty helping of ARGibility TM with the whole apocolyptic good vs evil slant. So it could be the basis for something like this (a little too early to tell, but it sure fits with what little is known)

There was also a coded script within the book's plot and a $2000 sweepstakes giveaway.

And the phrase "you told me mom and dad ran away" suggests the possibility of siblings (Sarah & Josh)

And solar flares it were...

Quote:
Synopsis

JANUARY 1999

On New Year's Day, it happens:

Over six billion people die within twenty-four hours.
The stunned survivors are left to fend for themselves in a world where chaos reigns. A world with no rules, no order...and no adults.

Because the only people left are teenagers

As the new year dawns, a reported "massive solar flare" causes power failures all over the globe and adults and children everywhere to melt into piles of "black goo."

Only young adults are spared, among them a quartet of drunken high school kids in suburban Seattle, two teens whose fake IDs have gained them entry to a New York City nightclub, a cocky resident in a Texas hospital, a pair of tough-talking inmates in a Pittsburgh jail, and Sarah and Joshua Levy, two American siblings visiting Jerusalem.

Sarah and Joshua desperately search the ancient scroll of their granduncle Elijah for clues to the apocalyptic event. A sweepstakes is announced at book's end with a $2000 prize to be awarded at the start of the year 2000.

Four groups are followed; all seem to be looking for the Chosen One, except for Josh and Sarah, who have some kind of scroll that needs a code in order to decipher the prophecies.

[snip]The "special" teenagers have visions that lead them West.[snip]

The agents of the awakened Demon Lilith plot to destroy the Visionaries, the special teenagers who have the power to destroy her.

Something is watching them. Something ancient. Something evil. Something that has waited for centuries for its time to arrive....

Although I've never read or even heard of the 'Countdown' series until now, the more I hear about it, the more I feel like it's connected to this website. All the parents are dead (from the title), and from the source we can deduce that the infants/children are dead too--like the description Caterpillar posted says, only young adults are left (which matches some of the messages referring to SATs, cell phones, etc.).

In a completely different direction...
