My opinion is that the 1-18-08 site and the images on it are part of what I call a META, or overall site, about the film and the promotion. The vast majority of people who were intrigued by the 1-18-08 tag probably googled that name and just went to the official site. Having images on that site with different dates than 1-18-08 would be confusing, I think. Why have a date on the images on all is a good question, but maybe they felt that most images have some kind of a date stamp on them so they needed to include one.

The question of how the military got to Manhattan so quickly has been debated since the early days of this promotion. I'm going with Kona's "this is the movies" explanation as the most likely. After all, once I accept the concept of a huge parasite riddled sea monster invading Manhattan, I'm pretty much willing to suspend disbelief for the rest of the ride.

1-18-08.com seems to be semi-promotional for the film with small (if any) clues for any backstory. (I'm speaking as of right now. There could be posts later that progress it further.)

I do have mixed feelings about the "suspend my disbelief" comment. The entire ARG + Movie + everything else seems to lean on facts. It's hard to imagine a giant monster, yes, but does that make it 100% undeniabily factually impossible? HIGHLY improbable, yes, but there's no certainty in ANYTHING (other than everyone dies [that's an RL fact]).

If JJ Abrams wanted you to go along with it just becaue "it's a movie, enjoy it", why would all of this stuff be going on? Yes, it's a great story but it makes you think about What If...?

-What if someone had a weapon powerful enough to demolish an entire city?
(The Atom Bomb)

-What if someone was able to conquer most of Europe and kill millions of people?
(Hitler)

Sorry about that rant, just my opinion.

Back to the military, my stance is they knew it was coming. Now I want to know why there was no warning to the general public. To stop city-wide chaos? (as if a monster attack on the city would freak people right the hell out?)

google Fort Hamilton, its right across Brooklyn, yes they could have got from there to Manhattan in the time they did, if you don't think that they could you need to reassess or military.

Dont forget, in times of disaster, the US military recalls everyone, whether you are off duty or a retiree

Keep in mind that there are several places in new jersey where national guards are stationed

Ask anyone enlisted and they will tell you

BTW i am emphasizing national guard because of the attire worn by the military in the movie, besides they are the first to act on homeland soil
