There was a pressure buildup in her head, which is the explanation to the bleeding eye socket. When they were taking her away, she popped.

That's it. Boom. Pow. Her brain exploded. POP!

Lizzy Caplan is gorgeous. Not too keen on those Stuff pictures though, I like her hair shorter.

And I agree that anyone saying she "might not be dead" has something severely wrong with them.
Although I can see how some people might believe that, being that when I saw the movie the first time I didn't notice her INFLATE. But those pictures show it perfectly.

I agree with one of the previous posts though... Looking through the MySpace's of everyone just makes me feel...unsettled. It's a strange feeling.
But...Marlena. Yeah. Awesome.

Edit: Also wanted to add...someone said she looked like a crackhead. I actually thought she looked a lot better when she was "sick" or "infected" or whatever. Mainly because she got paler, and...I like it when girls are pale.

I agree with your taste, 11808 ^_^

Also, I loved Marlena, she was my favourite female, and second favourite overall after Hud. I could identify with her at the start when this random guy she's barely met is clearly taken with her and she's really out of her element, and loved how she turned around & went traipsing about a monster-filled city with strangers and bashed the hell out of the parasitic Hudlover.

Marlena was awesome.....that picture of her inflated almost makes it worse then actually watching it.

I'd have to say that my favorite pic of her is the one where she has a straw in her mouth and is looking off to the side from her myspace. Someone has it as their forum avatar.

I hate that she died, but I loved how they made it right after she started to open up to Hud. The impact was just that much more brutal....

I hope we see more from her in future movies.

I just did an image search for Lizzy Caplan and all I can say is she is a chameleon. Just changing her hair makes her look like a totally different person.

I'm actually her biggest fan.

Hell, if giant crabs were attacking me, I hope my girlfriend'd beat 'em back. Hopefully, however, she'd shoot 'em.

Marlena's death was definitely the hardest one for me. I totally identified with her character and found her to be the most real. Maybe because she was the only one who died directly as a result of saving someone else making it even more tragic. She oozed chutzpah! Wink

Hello all, I am new to the forum here. Cloverfield has definitely captured my imagination, and I look forward to mulling things over with the rest of ya!

Now, concerning Marlena, it seems that its written in stone that her head exploded once she got into the tent. However, my initial reaction to that event was that she was killed by the MPs. ( military police, of course..) Everyone seemed very concerned that she had been bitten, and they dragged her away. I know it looked like her head popped, but I had considered the possibility that the blood splat came from one of the MPs putting a bullet thru her head to avoid whatever would have happened otherwise.

Did anyone else consider this?

In order for the blood to splash on the plastic wall the way it did, the gun would have to be fired at the front of her head, thereby shooting a hole into the back of her head. Said bullet subsequently shoots through the plastic after leaving her skull and strikes someone else in the quarantine.

Not gonna happen.

That's simple carelesness on the military's part, and those soldiers should be trained in basic gun control. The splash damage alone is enough to tell us that she wasn't shot. The only way to safely fire a shot into her head would be from behind in this scenario, otherwise you risk hitting the HAZMAT guys. If she was shot from behind, the blood would note have hit the plastic wall in that fashion.

It's really a common sense thing here. We see her getting sick, bleeding from the eyes, and then she bloats up real quick in an unatural fashion. This results in her sudden explosion. I really don't think the filmmakers intended for it be viewed as anything othat than that. Every aspect of the scene in question leads us to the point that Marlena exploded and that's that.

Me personally, I was happy to see it happen 'cause I've believed it was her that explodes from the first time we saw the picture of the HAZMAT guys carrying her around. To me, it was an "I told you so" moment.

OK, sounds reasonable, and most likely. However, we are left to wonder what happens to those who are bitten......aside from the obvious death of the victim. Surely something even worse happens, as everyone was quite alarmed when they discovered she had a bite wound.....

But seeing a monster from the very deep deep ocean breathing just fine on land is an ok stretch of the imagination? Or that the same monster from the planet earth could resist damage to it that would have destroyed the most hardened object on earth. Thats fine to. But if someone sees a character taken behind a screen and sees some blood splatter, and thinks they could still be alive, well thats just being dumb? Confused

Well she was either taken behind the screen because
A)it would have been too graphic for a pg-13(us) 15(uk)
B)To Save Money-Too expensive for special effects
C)That she didn't infact die and that it was someone else.
