I too, assumed that Hud was in pieces. All we see is his head and maybe upper torso. But i was under the impression that it had been established early on that MGP in fact, ate people. Didn't Marlena say that early on? something to the effect of: "It was eating people. It ate people." After of course, she first eye-witnessed it. Unless I misunderstood.

The problem is, we don't know how it was eating people. I get the distinct impression that, with the speed the monster moved up Broadway past the bodega that we still have yet to see how the monster actually eats. I think Hud was a "test chew".

I too had noticed the rather nasty sounds as Hud is being munched on. I get the distinct impression that Hud was bitten in half, his upper body lying outside the gum line. The sound was very gruesome, and seemed horrifically painful. I think this event was done and in this way to seal our desire to see MGP die. The whole 'it's a baby' theory allowed for sympathy for the monster, but when Hud gets it that pretty much goes away.

Heh...checked out his myspace page lately?

Body type: 2' 6" / Body builder

That just changed recently (it was 6'2"). I'm guessing the viral folks decided to have a little fun. Poory guy.

I never got any hint of sympathy for the monster. I just assumed the writers did what they did to Hud to give us the ultimate POV shot of a monster victim. Wholehearted agreement though...that scene was just sick, wrong, and disturbing. I liked it Smile (okay, like maybe too strong, I appreciated the writers for taking a chance and going there).

Don't you think there would have been blood coming out of his mouth if he had been chomped in two. Hell, I didn't even see a drop of blood. I think a monster 25 stories tall chewing someone into bits and the remains crashing to the ground would make a bit more of a mess. My vote is that one way or another, Hud survived.

C'mon Hud has to live, the friggin guy is money. People would pay for a sequel just to see him again.

I think I might sound like/be a sell out if I said I would see the second movie for him... But I'm pretty sure I would! Laughing

If you look closely, you do see a very quick splash of blood just as MGP chomps Hud in two.

Hud (Or as I perfer, HeadsUpDisplay) was easily the most enjoyable character. That said: I hope that if there is a sequel, HUD did not survive. That would not do justice to the character I had enjoyed and it would demean the scene in which he becomes MGP's snack.

The challenge I have for the writers is this: Make us another character as lovable as HUD was. Not "The Same" but "As Lovable".

HUD will live on on the Cloverfield DVD..

My .02.

Cool

I'll try to remember to keep my eye out for the splash next time I see the film, Leith. *shudder*

As for a sequel... Maybe they saved his brain! His scull did seem pretty thick. Wink

Robo-Hud 2.0.

Yeah, there really is -10% of seeing him in a sequel. We have Rob saying at the end that it killed Hud, anyways.

I guess the thing that puzzles me the most is why MGP walked away...

Yep and from what I've read the original draft for the screen was intended to be "gory and bloody" and rated R. (google the article out there...there are too many to find it and link here.)
So the blood in that scene, or the seeming lack thereof was within PG13 standards I am assuming. Either way that scene was powerful!

EDIT: According to Drew Goddard it was originally to be a hard R rating!

I wanted a hard R too! Although I was impressed with how good it was at PG-13, still....hard R coulda made it so much more.

Here's hoping for the unrated DVD.

You guys just need your extra bloody Hud chomping, eh? I was happy with the rating and the fact they kept it from looking like a slasher film.

Oh come on, it woulda been nice to see body parts of people who got munched on in the street. Or a few people get torn apart in the streets by those parasites. Maybe a couple popping in full view.

woulda been sweet.

Indeed. I have very high hopes for the DVD release. Besides, this movie was already horrifying. I don't know why they even bothered with pg-13 to begin with. Should have just gone all out.

A friend of mine pointed out that there would have been MANY more f-bombs dropped in reality. More swearing would have added to the believability in my opinion.

"holy fucking shit, jesus fuckin christ, oh my fucking god, lets get the fuck outta here" etc etc would have been commonly heard phrases, I'll wager!
