Docs found - Aid in Understanding Plot

Well with these latest "documents" (code cracked by ehsan, docs found by grumpyboy)....I think it gives us a better understanding of what's going on. I think some may have guessed, but here we have some official inside docs to support any SPEC.

CLASSIFIED
Eyes Only - Memorandum - 23 June 1982

To: SECEF
From: ##########
Subject: Corroboration of intelligence gathered from SPECTRUM regarding Tabas, Iran earthquake.

Summary:
Intelligence has confirmed that a failure by Soviet Project SPECTRUM (Soviet Ministry of General Machine Building, Project Designation 2371), a weapons research project with the goal of transporting solid matter backwards in time and retrieving it intact, was the cause of the massive Iranian earthquake on September 16, 1978.

Based on current intell, SPECTRUM is currently 2 years ahead of similar efforts in the United States (Attachment A).

Experiments conducted by the Soviets on September 16, 1978 resulted in a catastrophobic earthquake in Northern Iran. The earthquake completely leveled the town of Tabas and surrounding villages, resulting in an estimated 25,000 deaths (Attachment [illegible])

An agent undercover in the USSR has [illegible] made contact with Ivar Turgenev, a scientist central to SPECTRUM. Turgenev disclosed two memos pertaining to SPECTRUM and the investigation surrounding the earthquake (Attachments C/E, Translations, Attachments D/F).

Specific Details: The following facts derive from our assets within SPECTRUM and independent intelligence from our agents and allies:

- Reports from agents in Yazd confirmed the arrival of a Soviet Tupolev 114 three hours ahead of all other Soviet relief flights into the Yazd airport. Based on the approximate flight path calculated by our analysts, the plane was airborne within moments of the disaster. The plane was unloaded in the hangar and four trucks were seen shortly thereafter leaving Yazd. Reconnaissance photos show the convoy traveled directly to the geographic epicenter of the earthquake. The team was seen scouring the rubble, photographing objects recovered from the excavation. All equipment and personnel were on a returning flight within 16 hours of arrival to destinations unknown.

-Analysts later confirmed that at 13:39 on 16 Sep 1978, SPECTRUM researchers determined they were the immediate cause of the Tabas, Iran earthquake. SPECTRUM reported that their experiment was started at 13:30 local Iranian time. At 13:40 the experiment was terminated due to an error in calculation that resulted in the loss of measuring instruments related to the experiment (Attachments C/D).

- Subsequent information provided by Turgenev confirms that the recovery team positively identified fragments of the measuring device at the precise epicenter of the earthquake (Attachments E/F).

- It is believed that upon the start of the experiment at SPECTRUM, the instrument was transferred incorrectly, resulting in a spatial-time fold, depositing the instrument in a very seismically active area roughly 250 meters below the surface. The spatial-time fold, paired with the already unstable terrain, is believed to be the cause of the earthquake. The earthquake measured between 7.4 and 7.8 on the Richter scale, resulted in 40,000 casualties, including an estimated 25,000 deaths (Attachment G).

-The earthquake is anomalous for several reasons. First, the measured aftershocks were considerably milder than those typical of such a major seismic event. Second, the epicenter did not fall directly onto any known fault lines. Finally, the epicenter depth was inconsistent compared to the measurements of the subterranean strata.

Risk Assessment: SPECTRUM has solved a number of issues that continue to frustrate our own project team. Currently, they are measurably ahead of us in quantum field generation, human experimentation, and retrieval of test subjects. If they solve their accuracy and reliability issues, they will have a potent weapon capable of making our entire military obsolete.

Recommendations:
1. Immediate action should be taken to bring our technology up to par by exploiting our assests within SPECTRUM.
2. Turgenev should be considered a candidate for immediate defection and given incentive to leave USSR by either threatening exposure or negotiation.
3. SPECTRUM should be targeted for urgent action by assets within the Ministry of General Machine Building. It should either be killed admistratively, or through outright sabotage.

Did anyone notice that the turgenev files found here, thanks to EricL1st

from nru.us/hackers, look like notes on time travel?

RenZepolian:

These files were found several days ago, and we've been trying to determine their purpose ever since. If you search the forums for "turgenev" I'm sure the thread where they're being discussed will turn up...
