I think it was ripped off and the scarring is from it hitting the building and so on...

I doubt he swatted it off... A blow strong enough to break the head off in one clean swipe would most certainly knock the entire statue at least a little bit off kilter.
He had to have loosened it somehow, most likely by chewing on it.

Just Clumsy I think the head was just whacked off without any pre thought. you notice in most of the MGP scenes where he is destroying stuff. None of the distructions seems the least bit purposeful. My best guess would be that he smacked it while toying with the Tankership.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Maybe with the tail. When he wrecks the Broklyn Bridge it totaly looked accidental.

I don't think this is feasible. If the tail hit the statue hard enough to knock the head clean off, it would've knocked it off it's base at least a little bit.

Some of us actually had an argument over this. Perhaps he used both hands to drag himself out of the water, which resulted in the head being ripped off. He then threw it.
Perhaps.

is the SOL made out of copper? looked like it was on fire at the claw marks, or very very hot. or could have been made of copper, which when he ripped it up, made it shiny and exposed the copper. just wonderin why it looked so weird

Yeah its copper 100%...There lots of buildings around here that have the same green on the roof....it happens when the copper oxidizes

is you look at any scale pictures made comparing the MGP to the SOL, most of them depict the MGP's hands being too large to cause such a precise mark on the back of the SOL.... his teeth are jagged, but in the movie i don't recall seeing his claws/hands being really sharp...

Nothing on the poster tells us he has claws. He could have just stuck his fingers in the SoL back neck and then pulled his hand up threw the back of her head.
