Cool, are you serious?

Absolutely not, monster fights killed the Godzilla series.

You stole my picture. Eh, it's put to good use.

This thread has become a spawning ground for Godzilla lovers. Please, someone do us all a favor and delete it.

This is a Cloverfield forum, not a Godzilla forum. Since it has been confirmed that Godzilla has nothing to do with Cloverfield, your posts about Godzilla are consider spam.

So, unlike me, you actually have a reason to be quiet.

Some of you need to lighten up.

Well since this subject is clearly labeled SPEC and the title shows what it is about, not a single one of you bitching about it should even be reading it then let alone posting in it. I never understood why people who think a post shouldnt be somewhere or should die would take the time to exasperate the problem by continuing to read and post in it. Who cares where this thread is and isnt suposed to be and who cares if someone has what seems like an asinine idea? Some of you need to get off your high horses just because you dont like what someone wants to talk about. This is a forum for discussion of ALL aspects of the Cloverfield movie and speculation about where things are or COULD be going no matter how rediculous that speculation is, are a part of that. I agree that what this thread is about will never happen, its just peoples opinions and coming up with something else to talk about since the movie has been pretty much dissected to the point of inanity. The fact of the matter is JJ Abrams has said over and over this movie is a direct result of Godzilla and its influence. Secondly Godzilla dominated this genre of film so I see no issue with comparisons and people having a little fun with it.

anyone else feeling the heat from above?

im going to use this topic to talk about MGP's arms because i don't feel like making a new topic when im sure one exists.

i wasn't really sure how his arms were shaped, kind of like a praying mantis/gorilla type shape. given that, it would get decimated in a fight with pretty much anything that was bipedal. even something on all 4's like a giant lion. but i guess it would be really nice to get some insight on MGP's mindset because you really have to humanize/personify the monsters that are usually featured in kaijus. by that i mean you can tell if they are senseless destroyers or misunderstood heroes.

well, i'm sure that some where a post exists talking about its body structure, and i didn't feel like putting the aim on my forehead. in any case, it was a good way to mesh the two together.

Well, if nothing else ATT is resiliant and can withstand a large amount of punishment. It's also been labeled a "baby" so God only knows what the adult version is capable of. Also, it might have seemed clumsy because of it's youth and the fact that it was in a confusing situation. Regardless, it's still pretty strong and it's got a tail, that's always usefull for fighting and when it was on all fours it seems more like it took a gorilla like stance, honestly I'd have to see it one more time to get the image burned into my head completely but I noticed it had two very strong looking arms and two thinner arms I suppose if it ever achieved proper balance it could be a force to be reconed with.

Seriously? I expected more of a witty response than that. Especially since you are very protective of your Godzilla beliefs.

The idea of monster on monster is something that should be reserved for the past, because it's an idea of the past. If we put MGP up against somebody else, that wouldn't be very original, would it? No, it wouldn't, because that has already been done before with other (lesser) monsters.

Play nice Smile

Much respect Oli, and I mocked 1-800Slushomakesyouhappy as much as anyone, but this thread is not saying Cloverfield is a Godzilla film, or a remake, or a surprise 'Zilla film, etc. Just mentioning Godzilla in this forum does not make a thread OT, especially as JJ listed Godzilla specifically as an influence in the film.

In fact, since this thread is actually focussed on MGP, comparing him to Godzilla, and speculating on the whether the future of the Cloverfield franchise will emulate the genre formula established by Godzilla, I'd say this thread is 100% on-topic.

God help us all.

I don't think MGP is really malicious in nature so he could never really be a fighting machine against any godzilla type monster, one of my favorite scenarios is to imagine cloverfield had the government not started laying to mgp the second he stepped foot on manhattan.

Heh. It wasn't really meant to be witty. I have several motivation posters featuring that expression. I used it because it makes me laugh whenever I see it.

Also, saying Giant monster fights are a thing of the past is like saying gangster movies, buddy cop comedies, WWII dramas, and Cowboy movies are old and shouldn't be done anymore. Which is ridiculous. Giant monster battles are classic. Just because something has been done before doesn't mean it should never be done again. Otherwise we'd have nothing, to inculde inspiration for new things.

i should change that comma to a semicolon or period. what i meant to say was that MGP isn't really a "villain" so to speak and for that reason couldn't really hold its own against a monster that Godzilla is typically pitted against.

the second part was me talking about what it would have been like if MGP just kind of surfaced in Manhattan and wasn't attacked by the goverment and was just walking around.

Oh I don't know about that. It is just a baby after all. It could concievably grow to be even larger. Godzilla has fought all kinds of bull@#%. Giant Preying Mantis, Giant Moths, Giant Armadillos, That furry thing, Gigan (what the hell is Gigan anyway?), Three headed dragons, Giant Crawdad/hermit crab/shrimp monsters, chinese myth dragons from henry zhou's textbook, and 100 different kinds of Mecha Everybody. I think ATT would fit right in given some time and practice.

I think that would have been interesting (him just walking around.) I think that would have been a unique way to look at it from an FPP. This giant thing walking around, looking around and touching stuff. Kind of like that semi peacful final scene when it's just standing in the park looking around right?
