The thing about critics is that more often than not, they analyse a movie by whether they personally liked it, instead of whether it was actually a "good" movie.

Of course, then you get into the whole issue of what construes a "good" movie...

Are you kidding me? Most of the critics actually liked Cloverfield. Surprised me.

Gee i hope so, but i dont think that MGP is gonna be ssuch a hit in america as Godzilla is in Japan. Now dont get me wrong, i love this movie and love this ARG and everything, but unless the sequel(s) explains to people that have no clue bout this backstory, and also if it doesnt make the monster better, an example is powers, i love this so dont call me a hater, but i just dont think others will think of this as a hit, and when i say others i mean people who arent aware of the backstory, and there are more "others" than us. i hope some of you understand what im trying to say cuz i jus noticed that towards the end i was getting a little confusing.

i think some people disliked the movie because it was left so open. it was this awesome monster flick, people getting eaten and attacked and beth is hot lalala whatever, then BOOM, it was over. people were like, wtf, where's my neat, tied up ending?!

but for us, it's different.. the movie is a piece of this big puzzle we're trying to sort out, so we all loved it. it was amazing to see everything play out in the movie, when we already knew mostly what was going on before and during the movie. make any sense?

i personally thought the movie was amazing. my bf doesn't understand my continued obsession with it, but he enjoyed the flick thoroughly.

Pretty sure I was drunk when I posted that, or on my way there...because I don't remember posting it. Plus the time of the post would make sense.
But...I definitely described my feelings correctly.

I dunno, it was weird. I was running down an alley to get into a friend's house, it was cold out, and I just heard my feet scuffling and I was like...wow...Cloverfield.
Being that I hadn't seen any of these actors in any other movie, I dunno. I bought into it really easily, it felt like I was watching something that actually took place. Thus..."surreal".
I dunno, I'm ridiculously infatuated with this movie.
Different strokes for different folks.

i am the biggest movie snob anyone will ever meet, and i definitely think a movie should be judged on whether or not it is "good" or not (as opposed to myself enjoying it... again, call me a snob)
for instance AVPR - i thoroughly enjoyed it (i am an AVP geek), but it's a shit-ass movie.

cloverfield on the other hand- damn fine movie. from every aspect of what i think a "good" movie should have, cloverfield shattered my expectations.
camera work, character development, actual emotions in a "horror" movie, yadda yadda yadda. i don't want to turn this into an infatuation post, but i feel that the critics brushed this thing off from the get-go (critics can't go in with a good mindset when they hear the words "blair witch" tied in any way to a project)

I agree with your differentiation between "good" and "I liked it"

I think Cloverfield, however, falls into the category of "you'll like it if it suits your taste." For example, if you thought the monster looked really dumb, you probably didn't like the movie. I don't really think it could be called "good," I think it's more of whether you liked it or not.

Many people complained that it "didn't have an ending" or that the monster's origin, intentions, etc. where not explained. In terms of a strong storyline (traditionally necessary for a good movie), I'd say it could be considered a bad movie. If one can look at it as just an experience (i.e., not a traditional movie), that view may change.

Lots of people seem unable to do so, unfortunately.

You're putting Cloverfield in the same league with Anchorman, Bruce Almighty and Big Daddy? Seriously? Neutral

Anchorman is the only good one besides Cloverfield...but Cloverfield belongs nowhere near all those movies.

I thought that, but didn't wanna sound like a dick. Then you said it without sounding like a dick. Hmmm...

Also, to Stunt:

Those are comedies, man. Whether or not you enjoy them entirely depends on your sensahuemer. (For the record, Adam Sandler can go jump in a lake, as long as he never surfaces.)

Ebert is notorious for rating movies based on personal prefference. Even going so far as to state that the movie is good but he can't give it a good review because he doesn't like the genre (which... duh... why even review it then)

A friend and I argued for hours after the movie was over because he kept claiming that the movie "didn't have an ending" and I kept trying to explain to him that the tape WAS the movie. The movie was not about the tape. I can sort of understand a bit of frustration with people who just went to see the movie without knowing anything else about it. A lot of people probably didn't even think the movie was going to be filmed entirely in first person. Several recent films have utilized the shaky digital camera effect.

I agree though. It stupid to not be able to differentiate between a good movie and one you didn't like. Like I hate Batman Begins, but that doesn't mean the movie sucked.
