Doesn't connect to Cloverfield at all.I think it was just a nod at Carpenter for bein an icon of the horror genre.I mean if I was a director,I'd have to give props to him.He gave us Michael Myers,The Thing (my personal favorite Carpenter movie),Escape From New York,They Live (rediculously awesome long fight seen with Roddy Piper and Keith David), and Assault on Pecinct 13.He's payin his respects.

The statue of liberty scene(the head being tossed) was inspired by the poster for Escape From New York, I think. So yeah, it probably is just a nod in Carpenter's direction.

Well that's cool.Everyone has there opinion.I've always considered all these monster movies a sub section of the horror genre.I mean c'mon.Giant monster shows up in your neck of the woods, begins to destroy everything in site with little to no effort, kills everyone, all the people you love, care about.Destroys your life, what you've worked for years to achieve.Everything that matters to you, gone in a blink of an eye.Dont know about you,but that's pretty damn horrific to me.

I go with the opinion that is paying props to JC. Although there is some of that "six degrees of separation" stuff going on. Some early theories that Cloverfield may have been a sequel to the thing. Feel free to look up the reasons. Some things were because we heard about parasites, cold weather, infections, aliens, mutated things etc. Well then, Kurt Russel was in The Thing. He was also in Escape from New York which was an inspiration for the Statue of Libery head shot.
So maybe Cloverfield 2 will have Kurt Russel fighting Lo Pan reincarnated as MGP in Little China?

You forgot his most important piece of cinema:
Big Trouble in Little China.
(But yeah; fight scene from They Live is amazing. I was once working while it was on, read for a bit, looked up, and realized that almost half an hour had gone past without the fight ending.)
