[OFF TOPIC...Sorta] Monster Movie Questions?
Ask me here. (If it's got a monster in it, I've probably seen it)

Seriously, I consider myself something of an expert on monster movies, particularly Godzilla, as you may have noticed from my previous posts in other areas.

So, any questions you have about anything related, I will attempt to answer.

If I am not sure about the answer, I will not be an asshole, I will let you know that I am not sure. Wink

Not really a question, but I'm also a monster movie lover. I've always said that my favorite film is where "a brilliant yet beautiful ____ has to team with a tough and hardened _____ to stop a giant _____ from destroying ______." It's a surefire hit everytime, and it works for so many movies:
The Blob
Relic
King Kong
Mimic
Etc, etc.

I wouldn't put King Kong in that group. Also, I think the whole "brilliant yet beautiful" chick with "tough and hardened" guy is kinda corny. So many movies try to add in a semi-love story where it generally isn't necessary. If it's a monster movie, I wanna see a monster, not a love story.

Question: If I loved cloverfield, what other movies do you reccomend?

Monster movies I remember seeing:
King Kong
The Host
American Godzilla
Cloverfield (duh)

*EDIT* BTW, If possible... list them in order of highest effects quality (such as Cloverfield) to lowest, (such as like... Power Ranger type effects.)

Have you seen The Descent? I think part of the fun of Cloverfield was that it was real people thrust into a terrifying, over-the-top situation and it took the time for you to get to know the people. The Descent did the same thing and it terrified me (but I'm claustro and ork-phobic)

Well, it really just depends on your specific tastes. As I grew older (I'm only 20, though), my tastes really changed. For example, I used to hate The Evil Dead (not really a monster movie, but a horror movie to be sure) but now it is one of my favorite horror movies. I'm the type who'll watch a monster movie even if I am sure I'm not gonna like it just to see the monster.

Movies I really like:

Gojira (I know it's kinda cliche to say the original is better, but there really is no question. The American version, Godzilla, King of the Monsters! is basically just another '50's monster-on-the-loose movie, albeit still better than many)
Destroy All Monsters (more monsters than any other Godzilla movie expect Final Wars, which wasn't very good)
Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (the only fantasy Godzilla movie, but better than most of the series)
Godzilla X Mothra X MechaGodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S aka Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S (I really don't know why I like this one so much)
The '90's Gamera trilogy (if you've seen any of the originals, these are totally different)
King Kong (only the original, remakes were not good; King Kong vs. Godzilla is the only Godzilla comedy that I enjoy)
The Host (if they had stuck to either comedy or seriousness, I think it would have been better, though)

More later...

I have seen The Descent, but my viewing was interrupted repeatedly by people talking and passing through the room, so I'd have to watch it again. From my first viewing I honestly have no opinion whatsoever. (I could love it or hate it on my next; my first was in that bad of conditions)

Also, if you're not a Buffy fan, you should give it a try. No HUGE monsters, but the guy who wrote Cloverfield, Drew Goddard, also wrote for Buffy and the tone and dialogue are very similar.

Godzilla

You know what? If a post is about a specific movie/series or something like that, put the name of the category in the subject line (like I did). That way if anyone comes here looking for info on a specific movie, they don't have to sort through everything. Assuming this thread keeps up, of course. Razz

Now, since I've labelled this post as a "Godzilla" post, I'll toss out some random, but interesting, trivia that most people probably don't know:

Godzilla is typically grey, not green; the first green Godzilla was (arguably) in Godzilla 2000
Godzilla's height is anywhere from 50 meters (about 165 ft) to 100 meters (about 315 ft), depending on which movie you are watching
The original Gojira really isn't a monster movie; it's a drama with a monster in it. The focus really is on the characters, and it's probably the only one with characters that you may remember ('cept maybe Capt. Gordon in Final Wars--he was my favorite Very Happy )
Mothra, Rodan, Baragon, Manda, Gaira, the Meganulas, King Kong, Varan, Gorosaurus, and Kamoeba(s?) all appeared in other movies before showing up in the Godzilla series.
Godzilla made several apperances (along with Ghidorah and Gigan) in a Power Rangers-style superhero show called Zone Fighter, which seems to go along chronologically with the original Godzilla series.

I've been meaning to, not for the monsters or Drew Goddard, but because I've recently been converted into a Joss Whedon fan (Firefly will do it for you; if you've not seen it, buy it, I absolutely guarantee you will not be disappointed, no monsters, but great humor/adventure. He also writes Astonishing X-Men for those interested, which has become a new high point in X-Men comics. Yes, I am also a huge Marvel fan. And, yes, I am going way off topic. Apologies.)

Glad to hear that you're a Joss convert. If you get really into Buffy or Angel, you should also check out the comics. Each series is continuing in season 8 and 6 respectively in comic form, and there are some great monsters in there, like a Cloverfield-sized Michelle Tractenberg. *shudder* Scary.

Michelle Tractenberg is pretty hot. Does Joss write the comics, and, if so, is it necessary to watch the show first, or could one just jump into the comics (buying the comics would be cheaper than buying multiple seasons of a show, and I don't got much [any] money)?

hehe, I hear ya. just like the show, Joss Whedon is the EP but writes and directs a lot of the issues. He's really closely involved so all the issues have the "Joss" feel.

And yea, they wrote the comics so that you can just dive in, but it certainly helps to have seen both shows since there are a fair amount of references to past seasons. Try catching Angel on TNT in the morning to catch up, and I think FX still shows Buffy on Saturday and Sundays.

Thanks, man. With all my college stuff going on, it's not all that easy to follow any show, but I'll try to catch some if possible. I haven't seen Serenity or read any of those comics yet, though, so that's definitely more of a priority for me.

What about...

The Relic. I thought it was a good movie and a great book.

The monster may not be as 'big' as some of the others but it's damn scary, or at least the thought of something like that.

Smile
