I wouldn't worry. Fridays number has it a relative close 4th (6.6 to 4.0 mil). Not to mention depending on who budget numbers (25 to 35 mil) you read they made all their money back plus 100% profit over last weekend. So it wont affect a sequel.

If anything this puts a little bit more pressure on the next movie, but as a downside- it'll be a bit [if not completely] 'mainstream.'

Who cares? Everyone already saw it, and it already smashed box office records for January.

Not really. I dont think movie sales have been that great this year. The sequel would only have to be really mainstream IF the budget increased significantly over the first. So maybe if they only add 10 mil to the first budget for the second it could still be done. Though I don't think (and hope) the second is done like the first.

I hope they don't make a sequel to be like the first one. Only filmed from first person by someone with a video camera. Yes, it was a very good idea but if the second one is done like this, it could potentially ruin it if it isn't done right.
I'm all for subconsciously thinking I'm really there but I don't want a repeat of the first.
I just know, I shelled out $45 into seeing this movie so if they do make a sequel, it's gonna have to be so much better than the first to make me see it 4 times and pay for someone to go along the way.

Going back to the title of this thread... You should have just said "Every movie doesn't do so good this weekend."

The most any one movie made last friday was Meet the Spartans with 6.6m Cloverfield was only 2m or so behind, so compared to the other movies, Cloverfield is still doing very well.

You need to look at it by comparing how well Cloverfield does compared to the rest of the movies, not JUST compared to how much it made before.

I can't believe ANYONE would go see Meet the Spartans. It looks absolutely horrible.

Meet the Spartans is a lot like Rocky V. When you open up the DVD or VHS box, all you will find located inside is a big turd.

Ok... Box Office Mojo has put up their estimates for the entire weekend... I'll post em here so we can compare when they get the actual numbers.

-=Cloverfield=-
Friday: $4,132,000
Saturday: $5,513,000
Sunday: $3,055,000
Weekend Total: $12,700,000
Overall Total: $64,294,000

-=Rambo=-
Friday: $6,700,00
Saturday: $6,700,00
Sunday: $4,750,000
Total: $18,150,000

-=Meet the Spartans=-
Friday: $6,875,000
Saturday: $7,650,000
Sunday: $4,200,000
Total: $18,725,000

As you can see, Cloverfield is still holding up remarkably well for having this huge load of movies come out. Also, those other movies wont even make half as much as Cloverfield did the first weekend.

On a final note... at this rate, it looks like cloverfield might still hit the 100m mark before its theater run is over.
