I've been noticing the Haters....

I like to see that everyone in this site was pleased with the outcome. We all spent a lot (some more than others) of time trying to decipher the movie. After waiting for a while, we finally got the answers and were rewarded with a good movie experiance.

Au Contraire...

People at my school and around work who obviously didn't try to find out about it beforehand said that it was crap....why...I don't know.

Do they dislike it because it's an original...different kind of movie?

People don't like the movie before they're expecting everything to be answered for them. No one has any imagination left, because movies are so good at spoon-feeding us all the answers. For instance, I wrote a short story and let a friend read it, but, at the end, I didn't directly answer things...instead, I dropped hints throughout the story and left the end wide open. After all was said and done, I had to explain it all to them. People don't know how to think anymore, and it's retarted.

The same thing has been going on at my school. I would go there wearing my Cloverfield shirt (you can find them at Hot Topic), and people would say "that movie sucked, it was totally Godzilla." Then, I would give them a blank stare, and tell them to go see the movie again, and not be such a retart (couldn't resist). Some people would ask me what the monster is, then proceed to tell me that it is from space or that it is Godzilla or something like that. IT GETS GODDAMN ANNOYING. Yeah, those are the people who are in love with Hannah Montana (god help us all). They need to get a life.

*Turns rant off*

Shocked

Agreed...Hollywood has significantly dumbed down everyone who watches movies these days...Which is why tarantino movies dont always do great...or why every movie without a car chase, shooting, or fight scene every two minutes is disreagrded as crap...

Example: I showed a few friends of mine a clockwork orange...they hated it besides the fight scene in the beginning...people cannot think any more

Same

I wouldn't automaically label all the haters as mindless retards, but yeah, there definitely are a few.

Told some people at my work to go on opening night as i was doin, went in monday expecting to have a lot to talk about. I find out that they left RIGHT as MGP shows up because by then they were all feeling motion sickness. Bullshit! Then one of those guys comes over, says "what did the monster look like?" hahahaha. Well there's only one place to see him dum dum.

Other friends of mine went, said they didn't like it cause they sat too close and nothing made sense. So it's not for everyone, but to shrug it off with Godzilla/Blair Witch comparisons (holy shit i'm sick of hearing that) is the mindless retard route.

I dunno, if everyone were intelligent and creative, no one would be.

Heres my take on it...

This movie is typically either Love it or Hate it, would most of you agree? Ok, now... which of those two groups is more likely to be more vocal about it? Haters. Therefore you hear a lot more people say how much they hate it, but look at the average score it has on (please dont kill me for mentioning this place) IMDB, around an 8/10.

Another thing, I tend to find the people who loved it can explain what they liked MUCH better people who hated it can explain why they disliked it. You rarely see a positive review thats just like "ZOMG ITES LIEK TEH WYNZ!1!!!1111 100/10 stars!1!", whereas you see quite a few, "OMG. This movie made me sick, I give it zero stars" or, "IT WAS GODZILLA, I HAET IT11!!!"

Don't expect the mindless masses raised on being spoon fed all information without arriving at it on their own by thinking to like Cloverfield. It's not made for them, it's made for people who use their brains to comprehend what's around them.

As for anyone saying "it's Godzilla", you could try to reason with them by pointing out it's totally non-reptilian, non-dinosaur characteristics - or you could just hand them the incomprehensible response "No dumbass, it's a HUGE F*ING LION! A komodo dragon raped Nala from the Lion King and the baby they made is PISSED!" - hopefully resulting in the implosion of their addled mind. More likely though, they'll just call you stupid without attempting to reason and resort to the usual adolescent insults relating to your lineage or sexual preference. Your response to that is your own choice, but generally something like "Hey, that's what your sister said it was - but I don't know how she could tell facing away from the screen on her knees." will generally be understood by even the most weak-minded, and make others laugh at them.

Remember, Play Nice is the rule here - but out in the meatspace the rules are essentially yours. Wink

The lights were out when I took my shots at your sister.
She likes it in the dark.

films are not art anymore they're advertising. art doesn't make money advertisements do. ever wonder why there are so many commercials on tv? i know what you're thinking to make money right wrong to make everyone stupid.

Lots of classic films bombed at the B.O. and/or were panned by critics. Think Blade Runner...

Anyways, I loved the film. Totally blew me away. Some films are just ahead of their time, maybe after a few years people will realize what a gem Cloverfield is.

Well, I've been away for a couple of weeks.

I finally saw the movie the other day. At least half the people in the theater left in the middle of the film- after the first attack. While the actors were kindof meandering from place to place with their completely pointless (other than Hud) dialogue. Not too sure why they left although a few people were booing a bit. As I was in New York they may not have liked the images of the city being destroyed, but I think they were more bored than upset with the film.

(I stayed to the extreme end of course. Two other people did as well and they seemed annoyed with the tiny clue at the end..lots of credits to sit through for something so hard to catch.)
I thought this movie dragged in places, and the characters weren't engaging enough in the film to make you care about them. I thought the acting was atrocious. But the little monsters were pretty good and the final look at the monster was worth it I guess.

I'm not sure whether people who followed this online got that much more out of the story. I think that following the story had to make you feel more connected with the movie, more invested in it and more excited about it.

Not much of the online campaign was relevant or necessary to understand the story, but I did feel like I knew the characters and recognized them instantly on the screen. I was very sad at the end and found the final scene from Coney Island very bittersweet.

Perhaps the people who followed this online were monster movie fans, or fans of a certain kind, who would have loved this kind of monster film whatever it was? Hard to say for sure. The trailer was compelling and peaked people's interest but not everyone bothered to folllow this through to the end.

I don't think I'm a fair judge though. From moderating this forum, I knew everything that was going to happen before it happened so I can't claim to have been surprised.

Perfect example of just how odd the consumer market is:
Children of Men: 70,050,000 gross in theaters world wide
Budget 76,000,000

The benchwarmers: 59,843,754 gross in domestic theatres, not world wide i couldnt find it.
Budget 33,000,000

RIDICULOUS

People now a days would rather watch another hideous movie/culture spoof movie with 10,000 hit and deliver joke's, or the 500th sequal to american pie.
