People don't like the movie before they're expecting everything to be answered for them. No one has any imagination left, because movies are so good at spoon-feeding us all the answers. For instance, I wrote a short story and let a friend read it, but, at the end, I didn't directly answer things...instead, I dropped hints throughout the story and left the end wide open. After all was said and done, I had to explain it all to them. People don't know how to think anymore, and it's retarted.

Ha! I agree totally. All my friends watch the most ignorant ("retarted") dreck, and when I try to get them to watch something smart (what they call "a Joe movie" like I'm the only one in the world who enjoys intelligent film) they all sit there with this bovine expression on their faces. I then have to pause every half an hour to explain what's going on.

Did I mention that I live in the country? That might have something to do with it, but somehow I think it's a universal problem.

Edit: I also don't think that it is a question of what generation someone belongs to. I think that ignorant is ignorant, and that there are just as many examples of slack-jaw cinema 20, 30, 40 years ago as there are today.

IMHO the acting was mediocre, the love story was unbelievable, and even the vehicle for the film... HUD's camera shooting was pulled off poorly. On top of that, I had been following the ARE since day 1, and was expecting a lot more from the film in terms of integration with the story.

In the end, I was enjoying the story of the ARE, and to have the movie be such an insignificant piece of the puzzle (summed up by : Monster attacks NYC, people flee, army attacks back), I ultimately was left totally disappointed, and then some.

On the other hand, like a disney land ride, it was definitely interesting every now and then, but like most dinsey land rides, I ultimately came away from it not feeling anything, and knowing nothing more than I did going into it, besides the fact Rob liked Beth enough to risk his life for her. Wow. Amazing.

I know you kids always get up in arms when I post my opinion on how much I was disappointed by the movie, but get over it. Yes, it was an interesting take on monster movies. Sure, it explored a genre rarely explored (that of the fictional "documentary" movie). Was it original? No. Was it memorable? Hardly.

Of course, that is just how I feel about it. I'm sure a lot of you are right that people had a knee jerk reaction having seen the Blair Witch and a million other monster movies before, but don't blow off their opinions just because it doesn't vibe with your own. People have a right to completely despise what you love. It doesn't make them idiots, retarded, or mindless sheep. They're just people, like you, me, and mr. mcgee.

At the same time, don't knock the people who liked it either.
I found the movie to be great. Not in the top 10 movies of all time or anything, but liked it because of its originality (though you argue that it lacked that). No one's going to see eye to eye here. I agree that people shouldn't jump all over your shit because you didn't like it, but you can't ask for that and in return do just that.

Personally, I have more respect for those who followed the "Experience" beforehand, as all of us here have done, and say they don't particularly like the movie. I have less respect for those who simply went to see the movie and came away not liking it. And, I have no respect whatsoever for those who pass judgement before they've seen it.

I categorize reviews in the following ways:

First, I seperate those who did the Viral Marketing and those who didnt. Within those 2 groups, I categorize them as follows:

Respectable: These are people who, whether they liked it or not, are able to give understandable reasons for liking or disliking the movie. Also, these people, even if they did not like it, do not bash the movie, but simply say stuff like "well, I really didn't like when so and so did this because of this."

Semi-respectable: These people can give somewhat of an explanation of why they did or did not like it. Anyone who bashes the movie (and this is not because i liked it, its because any respectable critic should flat out not bash anything, they should simply state what was wrong and why) gets put in here or the next section.

Not Respectable: These are people who either (a) didnt even see the freakin movie (b) just go either zomfg it was teh wynz.1.>!.1! or zomfg it was teh suxz1!!1!!1! or (c) completely ignore anything else about the movie other then the fact that it made them sick. While I can accept that they were not happy with this, at least talk about the rest of the movie when you review it...

So did you want Hud to run around a city with a mounted tripod? The point of the movie is to show the HUMAN point of view....am I right?

You boys would have a much more enjoyable conversation in the chat room. On IRC chat-solutions.org server the room is #unfiction for general conversation or new trailhead discussions. I think there is a room for 1-18-08 as well, #slusho.
