I suggest that everyone look at both forums. Somebody posted something in TSR about the distortion puzzle that may help. It's nothing huge, just a way to look at it.

Hi all. This work thing can really interfere with my detective work.

Okay, so coming to the party late and all, here is what I see as the important things in the distortion puzzle. Tell me if I'm missing anything in this recap:

1. The blue puzzle squares match the blue squares at the bottom, indicating that this is where the answer lies. So we need to figure out how to fill in the puzzle to get this.

2. There are the same number of letters in the mostly-5-letter words as there are in the puzzle, indicating that we probably want to use them to fill in the puzzle.

3. The name of the puzzle is "distortion," which is some kind of hint.

4. There are numbers above three of the letters in the word "distortion", telling us that we probably need some numbers associated with the letters in order to solve it.

5. There are 10 letters in the word "distortion," and one of the numbers above the letters is a 10, indicating that each letter gets a number.

6. There are only 9 groups of mostly-5-letter words, so this doesn't match.

7. There are 9 blue boxes.

8. There are 10 "columns" if you follow the arrow, and each "column" starts above a letter in the word "distortion".

Seems like the numbers above the letters are some kind of offset.

EDIT: I am an idiot who cannot count. I was thinking that if you skip the blue boxes, there are mostly five boxes left in each "column". There are exactly 5 letters in each of the thingummies.

I think you've summed it up quite nicely, carmenmiranda. Two of your statements might be significant--meaning, I hadn't thought of the connection before:

Should we try working under the assumption that one letter from each group of five appears in the blue boxes? The ways I've tried adding letters to the grid thus far didn't take that into account. I don't think. Frankly, I've been doing this so many ways, I'm not certain which way is up anymore (no pun intended).

I looked at the vid again, and thought maybe that the reference "The Sky" with an arrow pointing up and to the right might not just be indicating the direction for the letters, but was a reference to Harry's sketch. So I tried the word "satellite" as the ending of the URL (both with and without ".html" after it), but came up with nothing but the Grimlet page.

That grimlet page creeps me out...
Hmm... The Sky does have something to do with it...
Also, there are six letters in "the sky"....

You know what this distortion business reminds me of? Have you seen those pictures done with perspective? The ones where, when viewed at a certain angle, they look like, oh, a person climbing out of a manhole, but when you see them from any other angle/direction, it all looks a bit off.

I've tried viewing this page at various angles, but I'm on a laptop, and the screen just goes black.

I don't think that's what this puzzle is about, because there are all of these numbers and things, but if someone could look at this puzzle from sharp angles, and just verify that there's nothing to see, I'd appreciate it.

Playfair cipher?

The five groups of five was bugging me, and then I remembered the playfair cipher used in Meigeist. I'm wondering if we have to first put the five-letter pairs in a grid, work out the cipher, and then enter the letters into the table. That might fit the idea of a distortion, since you're first using the playfair cipher, which is "distorting" what you are putting into the grid.

EDIT: I've just realized that it is NINE groups of five. I wonder if there is another way to modify this for a different kind of cipher?

Okay, so Pied Piper mentioned to me that when she highlights the page, she sees "distorted text", which I can't see on my browser.

However, what's been bugging me is that when you look at the code, there are very slight color changes for various letters in the error stuff at the top of the page.

So I've gone through and made the color changes more dramatic, and here are the results. There's definitely a message, as you can see the first line reads "Wendy we must talk."

Who's the squinting expert here? Looks like the second line is "I have been trying to contact you."

Here's a better version, where I have given the background color the same color as the text. You can clearly read "I have been trying to contact you for a very long time."

NOTE: There are some leftover letters.

EDIT: Note to self: Dramatic color differences, fine, but next time try to choose a combination that doesn't make you scream, "Oh, my eyes, my eyes!"

Good pic though. Not sure if the extra letters mean anything.

Sorry about that, but it doesn't show up in my browser at all, regardless of how I highlight it. I've tried everything, and resorted to manually changing the style sheets!

Actually, the correct URL is http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=518166#518166

Would this kind of mistake be a trout of a trout, or some other kind of entity?

EDIT: I'm afraid that I may have unintentionally led carmenmiranda astray on this one. The great thing is, though, that we can use her work to display the text in the wiki! (Which I'm working on, I swear!!!)

I don't see a problem with either, really....
