woe in forests

I hate trees & slopes & the sun & everything else about the unpredictable outside!!

I spent two & a half hours trying to find the shard in Glos to no avail. In fact, the batteries in both my sat nav & the Ipaq ran out before I could find it! I feel like such a failure & that I've let you all down Crying or Very sad

but I will try to convince my husband that he wants to spend tomorrow afternoon looking for this shard & if he doesn't, I'll try again next week on my own.

I think the reason I couldn't find it was because the woods were quite dense, so I couldn't walk from a to b, I had to go round in a circle which confused me & up & down slopes & over streams & I forgot which way North was Embarassed I even tried to recruit some dog walkers to help me

I might try the one south of Bristol on Monday as it looks like it's in the open more.

If anyone has any useful hints about how to do better then please pm me!

Edit : my lovely, lovely husband has agreed to help so maybe we'll find the shard tomorrow!!

You poor thing. Don't be ridiculous, you have NOT let us down!!! Believe me, I feel your pain. I am a letterboxer; letterboxing is in some ways like geocaching, one of the differences being that you use clues (most of the time) instead of coordinates. (There are several other differences as well.) And there have been boxes where the clues were accurate and simply directions (rather than containing a puzzle to solve) that have taken me several outings to find, and I've been doing this for a few years.

I've done some geocaching, too. Remember that there's a margin of error in all of the coordinates you're given and some caches are just really hard to find. From your description of the area, you happened to have been searching for a hard geocache. So you don't beat yourself up over this.

Woohoo!!! In my experience, two searchers is almost always better than one, because you can bounce ideas off of each other.

some hints for caching... tree + GPS = bad. Any find of tree cover will greatly affect the accuracy of the unit. basically the GPS needs line of sight to satellites, so when there is stuff in the way (trees, cliffs, building, etc) they will be blocked or worse, bounced. it is best to try open areas first so you get a feel for the way they hidden the shards. when using a GPS in tree cover try heading towards GZ (ground zero) from a number of different directions and then average it out. you will find that it will eventually lead you to one place more often. also allow for up to a 10 metre margin of error, so circle outwards from where the GPS is leading you if you can't find it. If you have any questions feel free to PM me or use one of my IMs.

Just my 2 cents, but I used my Car Sat Nav TomTom, took couple readings (like compass bearings) with no tree cover (as Jabba mentions), and used rudimentary triangulation using easily recognizable things on the ground, like a distinctive tree, or a bench. It was after the 3rd reading that I spotted the hide thingy, but TomTom was a bit all over the place when I went under the tree cover, so don't believe it's lies! Damn you liar TomTom!

still no joy

another day, another afternoon trapesing around woods & finding nothing...

I did take some photos & I've put them on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/20915268@N04/sets/72157604984824449/

I really got my hopes up as we found a 'hobbit house' tied together with string but there wasn't anything in it. I'm starting to feel like someone else may have found it first.

Not to be baffled by this, I'll give the one south of Bristol a go & if I can come up trumps there, I'll go back later in the week to this one.

Better luck next time, eh?

EDIT: Loved the photos, especially the one with sticks that looked like letters.
Well, drat. I'm sorry, I know how disappointing looking and not finding is. Maybe the PMs will read your post and can go check to see if it is still there, since they live in the area.

I'm going to post an APB on this box on the IG forums, and see if someone can tell us they have it. Hopefully, they'll all take the time to report in.

Crossing my fingers for your finding the next one--it certainly sounds more promising.

Please don't feel too dis-heartened Setters, it certainly has all the hallmarks, what with hobbit houses and weird letter twigs, but judging from your photos you had your work cut out, looks like some really dense woodland there.

Thank you for taking the time from your weekend to try though and you never know it may be 3rd time lucky. Smile

As PiedPiper said, perhaps the PM's (*COUGH* PM's *COUGH*) could find some way of confirming the Shard is actually still there?! I SAAAID, PERHAPS THE PM'S...... *COUGH*

The two Pat and Dave videos on theskyremains.com
I've finally figured out how you can see them if you missed them

If you have solved the game up to the shards and keys point but you missed viewing both of the Pat and Dave videos that load after solving puzzle 8, read on.

Log into the TSR website as usual. When you get there, click on the "Home" link in the side panel at the left. Once that page has loaded, paste the following text into the URL address right after "pm.cgi?" and before "session=" to view Pat and Dave's first uploaded video:

action=member&temp=PnD2B&

Hit your "return" key and then once the page has reloaded click the triangle play button on the video.

To get to the second video, follow the above procedure only paste in this text instead:

action=member&temp=PnDOrnot3B&

Please note: The "section=" and the gobbledygook text after it contains data which adds up to your user name and password and (I think) where you are in the game. That's why I can't just give you a URL to click on--then everyone would be logging in as me!

I *think* that you'll only be able to view the videos if you've solved all of the puzzles up to the sharks and keys puzzle first.

Have fun. Personally, I find the first video the funniest. You just gotta love Pat's explanation of childbirth...

Hey there, I am thinking that the PMs have given us a clue here. On the sky remains filing cabinets for the pages, the page for Shard 4 says that there is a shard there, while at the Shard 6 location it says, "An encoded message from Sam indicates that there may be Physical evidence at these co-ordinates."

I think maybe the aforementioned letters ARE the clue.

EDIT: Scratch that, I'm an idiot. Unless there were 12 letters....

At last!

Well, I did it!! I found a shard - number 11! The pics are on flickr again - http://www.flickr.com/photos/20915268@N04/sets/72157604984824449/ I did record the tape on to my camera & the sound is shocking as I was using my headphones & walkman (I know, I know - I'm just glad I still had it!!) It's on YouTube somewhere under Shard 11 - The Sky Remains & my username is missmillie393

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The letters were B & A as they're not very clear in the photo.

The postage label said "Shard 11/21 Letters/Originals 11" on one side & "She's caught our travelling souls and flown them to the next place." on the other side

The tape was labelled Shard 11 & the content was
"So here I am, Sam Skinnery, still alive. I'm looking round this big old house with wisteria growing up the front and I'm thinking who would leave a place like this empty? And I'm looking inside at room after room still with all it's books and furniture, nice stuff, old stuff collected from all over the world. I'm looking at all the photographs on the walls and at all the little personal items left lying round and I start to get a terrible chill. This place was abandoned suddenly. Where are they now, the previous occupants of Wisteria House? And then I find a little notebook, a diary, and I read the name inside - Wendy Skinnery."

Also there was a letter from Harry Skinnery dated 2008 - typed version attached.

The down side was I lost my camera case & spare battery!! I'm just not cut out for this Wink

Yay, setters! And how wonderful, after your frustration with the last one!

Fantastic!

And, can I say how great it is that you didn't give up? Well done, you!
