I have to say that from the photos, I can understand how hard it would have been to find! Leaf litter is the worst as it can hid little holes and all sorts unless you rummage through it all, because murphy's law... the bit you left unturned will be hiding the cache in a sneaky little nook. it was baptism by fire for you into geocaching!

3rd time lucky!

Well, I did go back to Glos as I was nearby for work & it would have been rude not to...

And - drumroll - I actually found the shard!! It was right near where I'd been all along.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Bad news though, the tin was missing so there's no letters. There were about 6 names in the geocache record book though, so I'm not sure if someone may have taken it as there was a fake dog poo & a marble in there instead?!

The tape was in there though labelled Shard 6 1968
"There's only a few minutes to go now - everyone who is still here, it's gone kind of quiet. I really thought we might be able to make them change their minds today. I thought if we could get on the news they'd realise that this time tomorrow there'd be no more news (faint gunshots in background)

The letter from Harry was the same & the photos are in flickr again - http://www.flickr.com/photos/20915268@N04/sets/72157604984824449/

The label said 'Regina most low' on one side & 'Shard 6/20 letters/originals 6 on the other

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm not sure how much this helps us but maybe we need to think about what the writing on both sides of the labels means. Does each shard actually have another meaning which is 20 letters long in this case? And the originals, are they letters not used before?

If someone pms me how to update the wiki, I'll get on the case

setters, I applaud you. Rock On

But, I hope the PMs have an alternate means of getting the necessary info to us, because I don't think we will be able to collect all the caches and as it was just demonstrated, parts are missing.

Hopefully, Pied-Piper can figure out the two letters like she did for the others. But the tin missing could also present another problem. The letter we need for the main shard/key puzzle may actually come from the name on the tin and not the phrase on the back of the tag (just specking, cause I'm not sure, it may come from something else altogether.)

Again, I applaud you.

That sounds a lot like someone has posted this cache on the official groundspeak website - which would be really bad news for us, because normal geocache rules means you remove some contents of the cache, and replace them with your own.

I will have a search now for it, and make sure someone hasn't unintentionally listed it.

I was right. There is a cache listed on geocaching.com which shares the EXACT same co-ordinates as shard number 6.

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=81b058a7-ad54-457d-8343-5070d9793121

That explains why the contents of our cache are missing. Can the next person that sees Hazel, kindly throw your GPS at her for not bothering to check that her co-ords didn't co-incide with someone elses?

I've been able to view the records for this cache, and have found the user that has taken our swag - I'll be messaging him and see if we can organise some sort of dead-drop.

Setters and Jedi, you are both heroes! That is fantastic! I cannot believe you went back for it, setters--I probably would have thrown my toys out of the pram and given up.

And Jedi, super well-done for tracking it down!

Weirdly, one of my workmates came up to me yesterday and said, "Oh, just to warn you, we might be asking you to go to Holland next week." He wasn't sure where yet, and it may or may not pan out, but usually when we have to go to Holland, it's the Amsterdam/Rotterdam area. It would be just too funny if my company paid for me to go pick up a shard.

I checked all the other cache co-ordinates, just to be on the safe side. One of the state-side ones is pretty close to another cache, but judging from the logs on the website, nobody has stumbled across it by accident yet.

I think we were just especially unlucky with shard 6 because the co-ordinates given were an EXACT match. The cache owner did make mention that he wasn't able to get an exact lock, so those are "best as" co-ordinates, but still - the fact that they exactly match the co-ordinates posted by TSR is unfathomably coincidental. Pat and Dave would no doubt call this "a sign", but I checked the cache owner, and the member that found our goodies, and they're both long-standing members with well fleshed out profiles and histories of finding and planting caches of their own, so if they ARE in-game characters, they're not "acting" - they really are what they claim to be.

Good grief--I have network problems for ONE DAY, and I miss everything!

I second carmenmiranda on the kudos--hooray for setters, intrepid rookie geocacher! And thank goodness you thought of ways to track down the box, Jedi--inspired.

As for figuring out what the two letters are supposed to be in the cache, I don't know if there's a way to do that. I haven't found an exact correlation between the letters in a cache and which cache they are left in. Not saying there isn't one, because I haven't actually tried to find one. Yet. But one thing that makes me wonder if there is one is that we've got that one "odd man out" box with two of the other boxes listed in it, which tends to muddy the waters.

Oh, also, welcome zinc! Of course you're welcome! We don't know where half the shards are anyway, but there's always plenty of other solving stuff that we get stumped on and can use all of the brain power we can get!

No response so far.

I put a comment on the cache page, warning people that there is another cache in the same area, and I got a response from the cache owner which simply said "How do you know it's not the one you're looking for".

That threw me a bit, as the paranoid maniac in me thought this was suggesting that the coincidence was intentional - and the users name was SamuiT - so I thought maybe it was Sam Skinnery - but then I remember that posting TSR stuff on Geocaching.com is a breach of the T&C's, and that SamuiT's profile dates back to 2006 with lots of caches to validate it as being a real person.

The response from the cache finder is the one we're really after, since he has our precious contents - or he may even have relocated them to another cache already. It's difficult to say.

Wiki Update 5/18/08

I've just finished updating "Trailhead" and "Wendy's Story" on the wiki, and have also posted audio files for the last two transmissions from Poliakov. If anyone can take a minute to look through the first two items to make sure I didn't forget anything, that would be great.

I tried to make everything non-spoilered so as not to ruin the game for any new players. If you see something that doesn't look right, let me know.

This feels like it's going slow. I mean, we got four (?) caches so far out of sixteen? If all of them are required, it's gonna be a long time...

And is the TSR main page coming up blank for anyone else?
