Yeah they'd probably be the people hired to "put up" the ads... But, they're a legit OOG company.

I ran a search for OBay on their site and got nothing.

FWIW, there was a very ARGish billboard(never lead anywhere) here in good ol' New Albany, IN a while back. 99.999% sure it was in reference to the Caesar's Indiana casino, merely said, "Caesar, you're fired! --The Donald." While Trump wouldn't take credit for the signs(there were rumors that CI was going to become a Trump casino), it was followed by one reading "Donald, you're hired!" Both signs had a telephone number at the bottom that lead to a message- IIRC, "Here is your clue- a dog is the only animal that barks, and eggs are round for a reason." Both signs posted by CBS Outdoor, who I believe told a local reporter, "Lady, I don't even know what the sign says, I just put the damn things up." Very interesting, I'll be keeping an eye on this.

Donald Trump billboard, Obay ads

Hey, I'm new here, so you'll have to forgive the brief entry.

About the billboard you mentioned above, the meaning I can glean is "don't crack under pressure" (figuratively). Barking at people (orders) is never good, and eggs are round since the shape is uniform in distributing pressure - so it can stand up to more pressure 'without cracking' (lierally). No idea where it goes from there.

Second, I am assembling said information on a post I made on Reddit. You'll have to pardon the deep-links and sporadic nature of the information, but I was piecing things together as I went along. Most significant quote I found so far was this:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Not sure if this is a spoiler, but I'll protect it nonetheless.

"One person on the TorCamp mailing list wrote that a colleague doing consulting work for a nearby college says that it's an ad campaign for Ontario colleges."

And congrats, this has reached #1 on Reddit. I want a poster on my wall. Twisted Evil [/spoiler]

After reading this thread, and looking up what I can, and scrolling over the last spoiler, I think it makes sence...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Sounds like a "if you have your own mind, come to our colleges" / "send your kids here so they get smart" type thing

Culture Jamming???

From http://mgerskup.blogspot.com/

There's been a lot of hubbub lately about these Obay ads that have been appearing around Ontario. People have been confused as to their intent and what they're meant to advertise; so I thought I would clear up some of the confusion.

These ads were my attempt to culture jam against culture jamming. Culture jamming usually takes on the form of turning media against its intended purpose; using the media to satire that which it was originally intended to portray. This is an attempt to turn that concept on its head, and satirize the concept of using media to satirize that which it was originally supposed to represent. Confusing? Perhaps.

Sadly, Obay is not a real product, and I'm sorry to all those whose hopes I had raised through this campaign.

The wikipedia OBAY article is appropriately modified.

I call BS here - it cost huge wads of money, who's that guy to pay for trying to undermine cultural foundations this way?

I've gone over the thread and numerous web references trying to lay out the trail of info over the net. Really, nothing much has been confirmed officially yet. I've posted a few threads in the Flickr group to clarify some of the mystery, so here's what I posted:

Quote:

What's known

Ads contain the phone number: 1-888-you-obay
- Youtube audio of the recorded message
- download the audio recording
- Transcript:
"Thank you for calling 1-888-YOU-OBAY. There's nothing worse than a child who won't do what they're told. You raise them, feed them, cloth them, sit through their violin recitals; and how do they pay you back?? They go ahead and think for themselves!

It's not right and it's not what you had in mind... Thankfully there's OBay! A new remedy from the makers of 'WhyBecauseIsaidso' And 'NotUnderMyRoof'

Is your child ignoring your subtle suggestions? Are they not getting the hint when you tell them what to do!? It's time for OBay; Are they making important life decisions without listening to your valuable irriputable input!? Hello OBay! OBay works where other parental controls, like shouting, don't. Just one dose and you'll see a difference... Your truculant teenagers will be transformed into dosile pussycats, open to your thoughts, your ideas and most importantly the future you've mapped out for them.

So order your supply of OBay today... Because YOUR Wish is YOUR command!"

24hrs.ca reports the connection with CBC Outdoor, a marketing firm, and a quote from a spokesperson:
"It's a teaser campaign, I can't say any more than that. The next phase will be revealed in a couple of weeks." - (Feb 15, 2008)

Media / community coverage links

Timeline:
1) Joey Devilla reports the mystery
2) Toronto.24hrs.ca reports the CBC Outdoor connection
3) Torontoist digs around and speculates a college connection
4) Mitchell Gerskup confesses to the ad campaign (almost undeniably joking)

Discussion:
* Unfiction forums (here)

Other:
* Obay search on Flickr
* Obay Flickr group

That's a great compilation there. Unfortunately, I think that means that there's not much to do aside from wait for "phase 2" of the campaign.

Has anyone received a response to their phone messages?

Not the ad campaign, I mean since your phone call.

This looks interesting!

I just read through the 4 pages, this looks very interesting.

Guess we wait for phase 2. When does that happen?

The proper monty python answer to the question is "thats a rather personal question, isn't it?"

Seriously, I documented when I left the message in this thread at the bottom, I think, of page 1. Valentines day, last thursday. So a week tomorrow.
