hm.... I like... might ave to read through at some point and attempt to develop a timeline ... great idea, hijacking a real life event and sci-fi-ing it.

OOG, GameJack.. wait, there isn't even a game going on... then just.. FAKE.
Take a look at this code from the old page on google cache:
Code:
<applet>
<param>
<param>
OK now that might be gibberish to you. But what it's saying is that the page is using a random text generator made in 1998 by some Eric dude. It doesn't take much to realise that this isn't a pro Bungie job (they'd probably at least make their OWN random text generator).
Feel free to tell the guys at the bungie forums that it's fake. I'm too lazy to signup there

I kind of figured it's not a Bungie related project after they locked the topic, plus the fact that the admins apparently knew nothing about it. Most people at Bungie's forums are continuing to play it as a non-Bungie related Halo based ARG.
I noticed that Java applet to, so I highly doubt Microsoft would take applets from computer geeks

Actually...
1) there's no game to hijack. it's new
2) the code is a separate applet the designer chose to use -its date of creation means nothing to the content of the page
3) Eric Harshbarger was affilliated with Mind Candy. That doesn't mean Eric is involve with this, but it certainly means whoever made this is most likely knowledgable of Perplex City and/or Mind Candy and/or ARGs
4) I'm a web developer, it's not gibberish to me OTOH, Unfiction doesn't show HTML, so your quote shows nothing sigificant. What you meant to quote was this:
Code:
applet code=RandomText2ech.class width=380 height=14 archive=RandomText2.jar
param name=COPYRIGHT value="RandomText applet, Copyright 1998, Eric Harshbarger"
param name=AUTHOR value="Eric Harshbarger, http://www.ericharshbarger.org"
...
param name=MESSAGE.0 value="** Alert **"
param name=MESSAGE.1 value="Invalid Date/Time"
param name=MESSAGE.2 value="Date predates Mission Date"
param name=MESSAGE.3 value="Running System Diagnostics"
/applet
which simply indicates a process for making the text animate from random text to those strings, using Eric's previously designed applet.

My question - regarding what MrToasty says re: the Morse code (over in MulletMan's thread) - is simple:
How do we contact the Mercury Slipspace probe?
EDIT: Also, mecuryss.net is now reading "Power Failiure: Insufficient Power" (sic).

Yeah. Not much has changed over this whole time.
I think it went: "Saving up power for databurst", Random text generator, "Insufficient power"
Seems they're having power problems.

MercurySS.net now says:
Quote:
Power Fa11ure: Insufficient Power
this number 11 seems to be related to the 11 found in the video found on the mercuryss.net website:
http://i269.photobucket.com/albums/jj41/AKA_The_Titan/MercurySSSymbol.jpg
also notable is the symbol next to the 11, which shows up in the spectogram from earlier:
http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/8206/screenshot2zg5.png
not sure what to do next since apparently the number has some sort of significance.

11?
That's ridiculous. That's not even funny.

Alright, I'm going to jump into this one. Evidently the last post in this thread was 4 days ago and no one has put together the new information showing on this site? Sloppy, sloppy!
Here's what I'm seeing:
There's a logs panel. I didn't see anyone referring to the logs panel in previous posts, so I'm assuming this is part of the "new information". Here is the data presented as it's shown on the web site:

So what we have here is a probe from the future. MercurySS COM Probe UNSC-7236.R333.1384.N581.1261.7783.Y313.
As for the logs, it tells us at the beginning that the log owners are unknown, and both the Helios and Mercury logs are inter-mixed. However, all logs posted look to be from the Mercury probe.
Helios was watching a Covenant invasion on Aegroto 7. It de-cloaked and was going to jump out of the area when it was hit by fire. Helios sent out Mercury SS, a com probe I believe, to send a message to to UNSC asking for reinforcements because the current UNSC force on the planet was wiped out.
Mercury came online after the hit and found its powerplant, jump drive, propulsion, and countermeasures were not working. It was able to repair everything and had enough power for two jumps.
Mercury scanned all networks and did not find any familiar signals. This tells me Helios was interrupted during the jump process and Mercury ended up in an area of space it wasn't supposed to be in. It did a scan and found it was 59 AU from the Sol system, but it's astronomical data did not match up with where it was.
Mercury did a galaxy scan and found the nearest ones were the Milky Way and Andromeda.
For some reason, it didn't have enough power to jump straight to Earth or Mars from its location, but it could jump to Andromeda Galaxy first (no destination given), then to Earth in the Milky Way Galaxy. However, this caused it to travel in the path of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy.
It jumped and made it, but collided with a US Military spy satellite in orbit around Earth, damaging its maneuverable thrusters. It did a time sync, and found either it was January 8th, 2008 or August 1st, 2008, depending on how you look at the date stamp. It states the date it synced up with is less than preset date/time, so this tells up Mercury has travelled from the future into the past, and blames the black hole encounter for it.
Mercury then decided to do a data dump before it self-destructs and attempts to contact someone on Earth. It does a scan and chooses the United States SETI listening post to send its transmission of "Greetings" to. It detects an outgoing message to the US government and assumes it is an early warning system from its transmission to the post. Mercury will now re-send the "Greetings" message every 30 seconds.
Also, combing through that Bungie.net forum post on all of this, MercurySS is posting over at http://www.praetoriaguard.com/search.php?search_author=MercurySS
That's what I've pieced together from the information on the site.

thanks for the outline, it's helpful. I actually archived the contents of the current site as soon as I heard it was updated
I haven't decided yet whether to put a page for it on the halo wiki (halo.wikibruce.com) as it doesn't seem related to iris at all, and its "argishness" is still up in the air
*shrug*

I was just thinking - we should create users on the www.praetoriaguard.com forum and then we would be able to send private messages to MercurySS through the site without having to worry about other people commenting.
Perhaps the probe would respond in that fashion, since it doesn't seem to respond to forum message posts.
