Cool

Probably. But there hasn't been anything new in...well forever. Doesn't feel like we're wasting board space when you see all the other crap that's at the top of the thread list.

For anyone who doesn't know anything about game design, this game will never actually release, and if it does, it won't be for another 4 to 5 years. Trust me on that, building a game from the ground up like this can never be accomplished by a bunch of inexperienced people who met over the internet like this. I've seen it 10 x 10^42 times, and trust me when I say this simply will never play out. Not bashing anybody, it's just the unfortunate truth with a project this massive (and yes, doing what they are doing is VERY massive)

That said, I can't wait for an actual paid developing company to take a shot at a Cloverfield game.

Actually, considering they are using the Half-Life engine, they already have most of the 'hard part' of the game done.

While yes, it will not be out for a year or two years, no game takes 5 to 6 years to make unless certain things further or prolong the release.

Why should I trust you? You're just a name on a forum, where are your credentials?

I've seen fangames fail, I've seen them release, this one has as much chance as any of them do.

You've seen the videos they released right? You're not just commenting whilst knowing fuck all about what you're talking about, right?

Actually, I HAVE seen the videos they've posted. A couple hours in the Source Engine, with a few edits in Hammer. Not too difficult. Plus, they've added a whole bunch of stuff in editing the video, not the game.
They haven't actually scripted anything besides a couple of pretty basic Trigger Events and covered the mistakes/incomplete parts with *dramatic lighting* (hehe...no biggie. I do it all the time)

eh...guess you didn't ask me. Just figured since you asked for the opinion for someone with experience in the field of Video game design, that I'd throw my hat into the ring.

But just to show that i AM paying attention now, i have to say this:
The wiki that you just brought up, in the legal issues area, is talking about fanmade games that were made by taking elements from existing games, or just changing minor elements of the existing game. In this case with Cloverfield, The official video game for Cloverfield hasnt even been made yet, so i dont see why this would qualify under that category. I would have to say that if Paramount pictures ltd. Decides to take Brad and company over at 1-18-08news.com to court for makin a totally standalone fanmade game, they would be in relatively uncharted territory. Im not so sure that this would be something that is so easily taken down...

You did read the bit where it said Fox got an Aliens fangame using the Quake engine taken down didn't you?

Yeah i read that bit man, but what I got from that was that the Aliens game that used the Quake engine to develop it got caught up in a lawsuit cuz of the fact that they basically created the aliens game by using Quake. They just changed a few things here and there, but the meat and potatoes of the game still screamed Quake. Now, as far as the Cloverfield Fanmade Game, its completely StandAlone. It is being done as a Complete original, it is not ripping anything off from a pre-existing game, which means that there is no type of risk of copyright infringement, at least as far as a game goes. The concept for the game, as far as the games storyline goes, is original for the most part, too. They took the essential aspects of the movie and incorporated them into the game, but the storyline follows a different path altogether. So unless Paramount and Bad Robot get down to the nitty gritty and make a game before this one is released, i highly doubt that Paramount is gonna do anything to take this game offline. Besides, JJ is allllll about the fans. I mean, dont get me wrong, i know, and we all know that the money plays a HUGE part in what hes doing, but like it was said before, The game is FOR the fans, and it wont be sold as far as i know. And as long as the game doesnt stand to threaten the Marketability of any future game that Paramount/Bad Robot puts out, and prevents them from making a HUGE profit, I seriously doubt that Paramount is gonna play the role of the bastard child of Fox, and follow suit with them in being complete assbags, and take something down that is no more than an homage to the amazing work that they have done. If anything, they should be giving these guys praise, and thank them for keeping interest in Cloverfield alive, while they twiddle their thumbs and think of their next move, and what they will be releasing next. Once again though, this is merely my opinion, and anyone and everyone can feel free to flame me, or tell me im full of crap or whathaveya, im just a peon, lol.

Uh, Fox shut it down not because they were using Quake but because they were using Fox's intellectual property, Aliens.

Holy shit dude, 4-5 years?? what fangames are you talkin about man?? i mean, these guys are makin this game in leaps and bounds. I mean, theyve only been at it for a month or two, and look what they have gotten done already. They have gotten through the extremely difficult part already, and its not just a handful of people workin on it, you would actually be surprised at how many people they actually have on their team. Join the forums at 1-18-08news.com, and check into it. You should probably do somethin like that before you run around and tell everyone what complete lack of faith and enthusiasm you have for what they are doin over there. Im not bashin u or nothin man, but its kind of depressing to see this kind of cynicism about something so awesome.

Besides which, you'll need Half Life 2 to play this game as it's using the same engine and is basically a total conversion.

I didnt know about them using the half life 2 engine, but at any rate, the rest of what i said, at least I think so, is still in the right though. JJ and Paramount , or at least JJ, are not complete assholes. The ARG that was developed was made totally for the fans, so that they could get into the experience, and even obsess about it, and they succeeded in stride with that. So im sure they very possibly even anticipated the making of a fanmade game for this film. If they were to take something like this, and have it shut down for no other reason than that they are complete assholes, then they would be making a bold, bold statement to us fans here, that the money is in fact, all they give a shit about, which in turn, would probably cause them to lose quite a bit of their fanbase with this movie, because we are all pretty much like a very twisted, very belated family all involved in this thing, in that any one of us could strike up a conversation with any other one of us Clover-heads, and talk for fuckin hours about the movie, the ARG, the sequel, ect. So JJ even allowing something like that to happen, just doesnt seem plauseable in my opinion. I think , like i said previously, that JJ is proud if anything at what has been accomplished. This game is nothing more than a tribute, and a GIGANTIC thumbs up, pointed directly at Abrams and his crew for makin this movie.

--and YES, i am aware that i have just made the longest run-on sentence in the history of UF, lol.
