dead-heading roses

Incidentally, the dead-heading roses motif in Alice's writing is to my mind a dual and combined reference to the rose-painting scene in the Queen of Hearts' croquet game & to her repeated injunction 'off with his/her head'.

Ged
Another thing that was annoying me

Well, I'm not sure what it means, but I've finally got the Ged reference on page 141 of MythObs (or at least, I'm pretty sure I have.)
http://ezinearticles.com/?Fantasy-Book-Review---A-Wizard-of-Earthsea-by-Ursula-K-Le-Guin&id=973958
One of the first fantasy books I ever read, actually...
I suspect that other than being a smart-alec way of 'warping' to his magician phase, it's probably not important, but at least I'm happy now.
Hmm, I wonder who publishes the Earthsea novels...?
Google google google... Aha!

Penguin...

And how can page 208 be on the left, when all other even pages are on the right?

Apologies for ignorance, I've been scrambling to get up to speed in past couple of days - where are you viewing mythobs?
I've read thus far - the stories - the marshayre site (Treacle&Ink), the librarything profile and catalogue.
If I'm missing out on any other sources I'd be grateful for a point in the right direction...

There's a link to the mythological objects scans on page 10, they're spoilered in stages so you can try to work it out for yourself if you like and just use them as hints.

*insert sound of dead horse being flogged here*

Zooming in on the diary image, with the lovely picture of the timehunt/alice-esque hare, you can see that the middle finger of the person holding the page down has been drawn back to ensure the dates on the bottom of the page are visible. It very clearly says the 21st and 22nd of June, marked out as a Monday and a Tuesday.

That's not right for this year, last year, next year... it is right for June 2010, however, and it was true in 2004.

The 19th being a monday was true in 2006 (but not 2007 either), and will not be true again until 2017.

And yes, I have been letting this inconsistency get to me far too much.

June/July

If you look to the far left of that line, it says July, which would give the correct day/date for 2008...
I really think this is errata rather than clue.

King snake

The snake on p140 has the banding of a King snake I think - perhaps hinting at the name of the story's King? Do we have any more progress on a potential 'correct' combination for the fairy tale btw?

King Snakes

I think you're right - but I think it's a Scarlet King Snake - the King of Hearts, perhaps?
http://www.pestproducts.com/images/sckng.jpg

Edit - hmmm... actually I now think it's a California Mountain King Snake. Or maybe there's a lot of snakes that look similar. I might give up on this until a reptologist (is that a word? I don't think that's a word...) turns up.

Now why would they post an update to the Slice story, then pull it off again? another mistake? or maybe Toby wanted to continue the story and Pengrin said no...

Thanks to having read Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events I can tell you that it's a herpetologist that we want Smile

This has annoyed me a bit to be honest - are we supposed to take what Slice said as part of the story or not now? Is that update going to be added again at a later date or will we get no further updates, and if that's the case how much of the story are we missing as a result? Slice's twitter that was added after the blog entry has been removed as well btw

For what it's worth, I think it's worth persuing the tarot card thread as well, as although I was expecting something to do with playing cards in the Alice theme, everything seems to be linking in well to the tarots...

Cocktails
An aside

Herpetologist:

2 parts vodka,
1 dash cobra venom.

Mix well over ice. Strain into Martini glass.

"This man needs a herpetologist!"

I think we should take slice's latest post as part of the game, even though it's been deleted. If it was an accident that it got posted I'd expect some sort of confirmation of that considering the nature of the game and how we're supposed to look in to every detail... I suppose things will become clear as time goes on though.

Back to the story - Tarot cards

As far as I can see there's no reason why Tarot cards can not be related to a game. I believe there are quite a few games that can be played on a Tarot pack.
My only concern is that the Queen of Hearts is such a fundamental character in the Alice story, however, and while there's no problem with the Queen in Tarot, there is a slight deficiency in the heart department.
Unless of course you're talking about French Tarot, in which case you have the 78 cards of 'divinatory' Tarot, and the correct suits for having a queen of hearts, i.e. the standard ones we know and love, but sadly the 'trump' cards (the major arcana) don't have the symbolism that we seek - i.e. while there are 22 of them, only the fool is named specifically - no death, hermit, magician, etc.
This does, I admit, cloud things slightly.
I suppose she could be the Queen of Cups in this case... :?
