Finally I can post!

Now, I can add my tuppence Smile I've just joined, directed through various turns from a competition site to win a library.... This is my first ever ARG, so bear with me...

First of all, Three OMG moments tonight.
First of all the coaster I found downstairs at home has a hare on it,
second (more remarkable) Mum and my brother were talking and Mum asked Gareth if he's seen this film about passing balls etc. online - and then of course I come to read the rest of this thread & find ALISDAIRPARK's link (sorry! don't know how to link back to the post).
Third we get the Guardian. I read G2 section every day and yet somehow I didn't read the article gazmataz linked to, except for the bottom two lines under the article!! Why didn't I read it?- too busy getting up to date on this whole treacle & ink story.....

Now my remarks/questions:

1)Has anyone looked for Slice, Mary Jane or anyone in Second Life? I've tried Parisienne & drawn a blank, but just wondered...

2)James is that a useful name? I ask because MR James wrote the story Slice was based on (& Slice seems to link into Alice's story more than the others) and Alice mentioned watching TV

Quote:
I'm going to turn on the little television in the back room and watch University Challenge, and Newsnight, and the Henry James film

Which film might that be? looked at Radio Times listings for the 8th & University challenge was on, as was Newsnight (but then it's always on! but couldn't see a relevent film (on terrestrial TV, I'm guessing the bookshop doesn't have freeview or a satalite dish!)

3)Are the scratches on the bookshop window done by a[the?] hare?

4)Mary Jane theory did the strange creature that ran in front of the car (if that is what happened) happen to be a hare, or a cat (Claribella-Pussywillow?) - I admit that's probably streatching it a bit...

So that's my contribution for the night - it's been a long day reading all the bits & pieced to get to where everyone else is!

Hi

I can answer that one - it was Wings Of A Dove, with Helena Bonham-Carter. Think it was on BBC1.

Well, while I was waiting for news from the meeting with Jacques, I've been rereading Mythological Objects, and in particular the chapter on Obsidian Mirrors and noticed a couple of things. It will be interesting to find out if any of these things tie in with the new information that is forthcoming from Marsh-Ayre.

The little bespectacled man who is clad in scarlet introduces himself as a mirage:

From wikipedia: The word comes to English via the French mirage, from the Latin mirare, meaning 'to appear, to seem'. This is the same root as for mirror. Like a mirror, a mirage shows images of things which are elsewhere.

Hadn't realised that link the first few times I had read that.

The traveller says "It's only legend that they actually…"

Have not had any luck finding out what mirages are supposed to legendarily do. Any ideas?

However, as an interesting aside, I did find out that a certain type of heat mirage is called a Fata Morgana (that being the Latinised form of Morgan le Fay from Arthurian legend).

When the discussion turns to "safe passage", he pulls out his pocket watch and suggests that although as a mirage he is supposed to be deceptive, he will give the traveller a moment of clarity. Then he turns himself into a slender snake that proceeds to eat its own tail (tale) – ourobouros, a symbol of unity, circularity, rebirth with alchemical, mystical and spiritual significance.

Still mulling this over...

ouroboros

According to this Wikipedia article, the Magician wears an ouroboros around his waist:

Meeting with Jacques... part 2

So.... what did we find?

This was the handwritten note left inside the book for Veebee:

Transcribed reads:
Quote:
H AQUIRED IT FROM A HOUSE CLEARANCE IN THE NORTH OF ENGLAND. SHE WON'T SAY EXACTLY WHERE FROM, BY WHICH I SURMISE THAT THERE MAY BE BEEN SOME MILD DECEPTION ON HER PART. H DID MENTION THAT IT IS PROBABLY ONE OF A PAIR, AND THE ELDERLY WOMAN WHO SOLD IT TO HER WAS "GLAD TO BE RID OF IT".
I SUSPECT H MAY HAVE ASSURED THE OWNER THAT SHE WOULD DESTROY IT.
OUR FIRST EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN FASCINATING. THE MIRROR OPENS A GATEWAY IN THE HUMAN MIND TO A SHARED SPACE. SOMETHING AKIN TO THE JUNGIAN NOTION. THE EXPERIENCE IS UNCONTROLLED; HOWEVER THE NOTES H PURCHASED WITH THE

The other pieces of notes contained the complete rules to a game. The pieces were duplicated quite a few times within the books and Chelic will be writing those up.

In addition to these were much more rare pieces which contained only pieces of the whole in each. The combination of these are as follows:
Quote:
The Paths
Each man in turn must declare their chosen path.

Ahav - The Path of Love - 8 points
Kavod - The Path of Honour - 26 points
Koakh - The Path of Power - 34 points
Adam - The Path of Man -
Mezeg - The Path of Synergy - 50 points
Halakh - The Path of Motion - 55 points
.......... - The Path of Wisdom - 68 points
Mabool - The Path of the Flood -
Lekhem - The Path of Sustainance - 78 points
Melekh - The Path of Kingship - 90 points
Siman - The Path of Passage - 100 points

As you can see, we have almost everything but we are missing a few pieces.

Photos of Jacques, the other handwritten note and more things can be seen on my Flickr
Not added descriptions or anything yet as I'm off to bed now!

EDIT: Flickr descriptions now added Smile

So I guess the comments we have come across about needing more cards relate to this game then?

Ah, we're all Jung at heart... so it's a pathway to the collective unconscious...

Wikipedia: Chokhmah, also sometimes transliterated chochma or hokhmah (חכמה) is the Hebrew word for "wisdom". It is cognate with the Arabic word Hikmah, which also means 'wisdom'.

Plates

That Wedgwood plate is a Jasperware plate featuring Aurora and the Chariot of Dawn:

http://www.uniquecollectable.com/items_for_sale.htm

Which makes me think that the plate on Ray and Lynn's Flickr page might also be a Wedgwood.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/25071430@N08/2360870410/

It looks like lustreware, and Wedgwood had a series once called "Fairyland," which seems appropriate, but I can't locate this particular pattern ...

EDIT: The Chariot is one of the Major Arcana: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chariot_(Tarot_card)

Yes, it looks that way. Although it is similar to the scoring system in many of the games I have researched, it is different. I still have time to research more, so I will get on it tomorrow.

Thanks for everything, guys, you did a sterling job! The report & photos are ggggrreeaatt!!

Now, we have some work to do!
xx

I have searched and searched for that plate. It is nowhere to be found. Looking at it carefully, it actually looks like it has been mainly handpainted, but the bamboo pattern is definitely a transfer print, possibly with painted gold edges. In short, it looks like a bought plate that someone has added extra decoration to at home.
An annoying distraction, but is it just a distraction?

I haven't looked yet, but Slice apparently has a character there, parisienne alluded to that. One of the numerous things I plan to look at tomorrow!

The snake is also often linked to the Magician card, either as a belt, or as the caudacus, which we know today as a symbol for the medical services.

Has anyone read "The Haunted Dolls House"? This really reminds me of it, when the new owner of the house asks the vendor where it came from.

Also, has anyone looked into Strawberry Hill? The haunted doll's house reminded Dillet, the buyer, of Strawberry Hill. Have a look, it's fascinating, and leads us full circle back to Dr Dee's Mirror. I'll go get some links for you to peruse....

Here's the Rules of the Game. It is spread over 5 pieces of paper.

Quote:
RULES OF PLAY.

Dr. John Dee's Tarot is played with all of the Major Arcana but only the Face cards of the Minor Arcana. In the Final Reckoning of the game, the Minor Arcana are worthless, unless you wish to play the fool.

1. DEALING THE CARDS.

Each player is dealt 6 cards, which they may inspect, before each declaring their path. The players may choose to stick or stray from their path. If at the end of the game they attain their path with 6 or less of the cards in their hand (Lot), the player then receives points to double their path's value. Straying from your chosen path is only recommended if the player holds a higher hand than double their path's value.

(end of part 1)

2. CALLING A DUEL.

Once each player has declared their path, the player to the left of the dealer may choose any other player and call a Duel. Each Dueller must sacrifice a card blind, when both cards are upon the table they are turned over and the owner of the highest card wins the Duel. (it must be noted that the cards in the Duel are discarded and cannot re-enter the game. Also note that Aces are high unless played against a Knave) The Duel must be performed even if the players hold no Minor Arcana cards. A Major Arcana card beats a Minor Arcana card no matter what it's value.

3. SWAPPING OF CARDS.

The winner of the Duel is the Taker and asks the loser, who is the Giver, for a card to be swapped,

(end of part 2)

(cont'd), they can ask for a card by it's name, chapter or house. If the giver holds the card asked for they must swap it with the Taker. This is done blind by placing the cards face down in the middle of the table. The Taker may choose any of their cards to swap with the Giver. If the Giver holds more than one card of the chapter of house asked for, then they may decide which card to give up. If the giver does not hold the card asked for then they decline to swap, unless they wish to Make a Fool of the Taker.

(end of part 3)

4. PLAYING THE FOOL

If the Giver holds the Fool card, they may Make a Fool of the Taker by giving them this card - even if the do in fact hold the card asked for. After the swap both players pick up a card from the Deck so that they once again hold 6 cards. The turn is now over and the next player may call a Duel.

5. THE FINAL RECKONING

The game is over once all the cards in the Deck are used up or all the players are in agreement to call the final reckoning. All players show their cards and put forward the cards in their hands they wish to be judged for the Final Reckoning - these cards are called the Lot. The values of the Lots are determined by either the total of the cards presented or the doubled value of the chosen path if obtained. Whomsoever has the highest valued Lot wins.

(end of part 4)

Fools's Gold

If at the end of the game the player holds The Fool plus a royal household of the minor arcana which is The Ace, The King, The Queen, The Knight plus THe Knave of the same suit The Fool shall be valued at his higher value of 22 points. The Path of the Fool is worth 44 points if attained.

The other handwritten note says:

Quote:
H WILL NOT STAY AWAY FROM THE MIRROr. D AND I HAVE HAD TO LOCK IT AWAY FROM HER, ALTHOUGH SHE IS EVEN NOW SEARCHING THE SHOP FOR IT. WE SUSPECT THAT CERTAIN MINDS ARE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE EFFECTS; H HAS LONG HARBOURED THE DESIRE TO PAINT, AND SINCE TESTING THE MIRROR HAS FOUND HER FLUENCY AND SKILL MARKEDLY INCREASED. D, WHO PROFESSES HERSELF WITHOUT CREATIVITY, SEEMS ALMOST IMMUNE.

FOR MYSELF, I AM INCREASINGLY CONCERNED WITH THE WARNINGS GIVEN BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER. H SAYS THAT THE ELDERLY WOMAN WAS MUCH PLAGUED BY A PERSON WHO WISHED TO TAKE THE MIRROR, BY FORCE OR GUILE. I WONDER
