Through the looking glass

I second someone going to have a look in the British Library. You may want to check out Alice through the looking glass too. They seem to be switching between the two books quite a bit.

A Wild Hare

I have been puzzling over the cryptic sentence "Where four creatures are gathered -- and I think, inexplicably, of a convent I once heard tell of, San Miguelion de los Mercados -- but the creatures are not important."

The syntax is so strange, I'm sure there is some clue buried there. I have been trying to work out anagrams for San Miguelion de los Mercados, but there are so many variations because so many letters (even excluding "lions", if that's what the last part means) ... I'm getting nowhere.

But I noticed the odd presence of the word "conventIon" in the middle there, and then I found that the London Book Fair started today ...

I don't want to start someone off on a fool's errand, but it might be worth checking out Penguin's booth at the Fair, no? (At Earl's Court, through Wednesday).

PS: I don't know, maybe not. Looking at the website, it doesn't look like LBF would be a very accessible place to invite participation. I don't want anyone to go to any trouble or expense, it just seemed like an interesting coincidence.

Yup, Gem_Star gets the credit for the find, way back on page 35 I think. Have fun catching up, you've just caught your first Trout !! Wink

I thought i'd solved something brilliant then! No, just following the link with the other players in the Lawrence and Terry story - but I guess I was the one to post first. Wink

Yeah I'm sure there's something there too, not found anything though.

I'm still fairly sure this is a joke referring to the Perplex City card - just something to be enjoyed, surely?

I agree with Wukka - it's a little joke, I'm sure. I think the 4 creatures that Marsh-Ayre is picturing are the human face, lion, ox and eagle that appear on the World tarot card:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_(Tarot_card)

These remind MA of the convent of the San Miguelion de los Mercados described in the Perplex City card Wukka found because that convent has a painting in it showing an angel, lion, bull and eagle, pretty much the same four creatures:

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13276

That's my theory anyhow.

OOG:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Naomi Alderman designed that puzzle card, and I think she may also be the writer behind Marsh-Ayre's posts...

Nevermind

So, please delete/excuse my previous posts. I had no idea I was supposed to know something about other ARGs that one of the authors had written for before this one (?). I guess the joke's on me.

That's why I don't think it's a clue - I don't think they do expect you to know about the game before - it's just a nice in-joke for those that do!

(Which admittedly I didn't: I found it accidentally mis-typing into google...)

The "where four creatures are gathered" could always also refer to Trafalgar Square: 4 lions, right?

Any conventions or stuff going on around there?

Idea Dorcas couldn't have got hold of Thor's Hammer, could she? (as mentioned on the index page of Mythological Objects). Very handy for smashing things to smithereens.

Nice thought! I've just checked though, and (to my surprise) there are only three creatures: the 'fourth plinth' is an art installation point:

http://www.london.gov.uk/trafalgarsquare/

...but that begs the question: what sits there now? The site above appears to be out of date, so well worth a look, london people?!

Next event is St George's day celebrations on the 23rd April, apparently: probably not a go-er.

This is all probably nothing of course. But I am now intrigued by the Fourth Plinth (next in line to the Third Power, maybe Wink ).

jb

PS. Nice one cabbage! Thors Hammer, now *that's* an artefact.

Is it not still that weird armless woman then? I can't say I'm a fan of the things they choose to go on the plinth... the pigeon hotel one was about the only one I liked but I don't like the pigeons!

The Emin woman might still be there, I think they are choosing the new one this month.

All this Art.......I have searched and searched for the picture on Ray & Lynns hallway floor, I can't find anything that even looks like it, yet it seems somehow familiar.....
Any thoughts?

It's the little things that bug me you know.....!

But what is a pigeon hotel without pigeons?

On my previous post, discovered a neat coincidence for fans of the fundamental interconnectedness of all things, in the Dirk Gently novel The Long Dark Teatime Of The Soul, St Pancras doubles up as Valhalla.
