No wait, he's talked to the Oracle? So he's Neo then? and the mirror is the matrix... Confused

EDIT: on a more serious note, do we need to write more stories to let him know who his queen is?

Isn't that something he ought to know himself?

Going back to the names of the brothers, don't we already know one name, and just have to find the other one? Edit, maybe not, since the caterpillar says that their true names are hidden...

Possible "Brother"?

Quote:
Dee found he was able to use it for such communications, but he could not write down what he would see during his visions. It became necessary for Dee to have an assistant write down what he saw and heard, and Dee found him in Edward Kelly.

Edward Kelly was born in 1555 in the county of Lancashire. Nothing is known about his early life, but after being convicted of counterfeiting, he was sentenced to the pillory at Lancaster where he lost his ears. Then he moved to Worcester, becoming an apothecary and an alchemist, gaining a reputation for being a sensualist. While Dee sought knowledge for knowledge's sake, Kelly only was interested how it could make him rich. Kelly was famous for claiming to have discovered the Philosopher's stone, and a deep knowledge of necromancy. He was also well known as a con man, having duped many people. Upon meeting Dee, Kelly looked into the convex crystal and nearly every time he did so, he seemed to have wondrous visions. Although Dee was very intelligent and learned, he was also too trusting. Kelly not only saw visions of angels, but also of devils whose task was to destroy the two men. Dee was so convinced of the truth of these visions that he transcribed them verbatim and they can be found in the book: 'A True and Faithful Relation of what passed between Dr. Dee and some Spirits'. Now, Dee claimed to have finally found the elixir vitæ in the ruins of Glastonberry Abbey, and with the elixir and the spirits, Dee's fame spread throughout Europe attracting many curious visitors, including Albert Laski, a Polish nobleman. Laski invited the two men, along with their wives and children to return with him to Poland, so they all went.

For several years after 1583 Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelly lived in Trebona in Poland, the home town of Albert Laski, who sponsored their alchemical researches. In about a year, Laski's fortune was spent, and the men began to travel about Poland and Bohemia, from city to city finding new people to dupe. These travels went on until 1587, when in Prague Dr. Dee's health began to fail and when Kelly and Dee had a falling out because of Kelly's new explorations of a book called The Necronomicon, that frightened both Dee and his family.

Quote:
(this book does exist and was the basis of Kelly and Dee's Endochian magic, Crowley's The Book of the Law and H.P Lovecraft's Cthulthu Mythos)

Anything sounding familiar here....?!

Quote:
Shortly after that Dee returned to England along with his family. As for the final fate of Kelly, he continued to attempt to dupe people in Germany, claiming that he had the philosopher's stone and the elixir vitæ as before, but not finding as much interest as before. Eventually he was arrested as a heretic and a sorcerer in Prague, and again in southern Germany. But, after the second imprisonment he attempted to escape from his prison, only managing to fall and brake two of his ribs and both legs. He died in 1593 due to his injuries.

Dee returned to England, welcomed by Elizabeth and the court then went back to his home in Mortlake. Dee found his house ransacked with many of his possesions stolen or destroyed. Elizabeth gave him 2,000 pounds for the damage.

Oh look, a Queen!!

Laughing

EDIT: Mortlake = Deathlake. Nice

EDIT2: You know what? It's probably better if I just post the link to the Bio, it's the same one I posted way back, but this is easier than everyone trawling back through everything!!

http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/Bios/JohnDee.htm

Cool

EDIT 3: I am also liking the Tweeds as possibles ,(sorry, changed my mind on that one!) and very much liking Cabbage's idea

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Dan & Adrian

For one thing, if you look back over the chat logs for " Your Place and Mine" , there were a few times when someone tried to slide things into the chat....

Erm, another weird possibility has crossed my warped mind.....

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Could Bella actually be a man? The Grin without a cat (ref claribella-pussywillow) The Man in the mask. The opponent? Remember Jaques said "Bella is… and Marsh-Ayre, 'e never noticed zat…." ,could that be what he was trying to tell Alice? I know Jaques always calls Bella "She", but "she" does seem to disappear & re-appear a lot. Remember Jaques "Doctor" card, and the fact that Bella needed him to give her creative gifts? Or should I see a doctor & have my head examined? Laughing

EDIT 4: The mouse hates it when Alice mentions cats or dogs.
Quote:
Mouse: Alice meets the mouse while swimming in the pool of tears. He hates cats and dogs, and he begins to tell Alice a disturbing story about being put on trial. He is very sensitive.

Well the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Adrian and Dan

thing was kind of a joke, though not beyond the realms of possibility. Curiouser things have happened...

But here's someone's name who keeps coming up, so I might as well mention it; best to get all ideas out into the open, I say.

John Dee was interested in Hermetic magic / philosophy:

Quote:

(Wikipedia)
Hermes Trismegistus

Hermes Trismegistus (Greek: Ἑρμῆς ὁ Τρισμέγιστος, "thrice-great Hermes"; Latin: Mercurius ter Maximus) is the syncretism of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth.

...Both Thoth and Hermes were gods of writing and of magic in their respective cultures. Thus, the Greek god of interpretive communication was combined with the Egyptian god of wisdom as a patron of astrology and alchemy. In addition, both gods were psychopomps; guiding souls to the afterlife.

And if you remember way back when we found that Greek word that meant inspiration, and some of the entries in Mythological Objects, there are some connections with the ancient Classical world already.
Will try to find out some more...

have a shrewd idea who my enemy is – or rather my enemies – and the fact that one of 'em's supposed to have been dead for 400 years and the other's supposed to be fictional just makes them more dangerous in my book. So to speak.

If one of M-A's enemies is supposed to be fictional, then doesn't that rather rule out Dan and Adrian, or is that a puzzle too, and one of them doesn't exist? Smile The same with any real life connections with Dee, for that matter. Could it be a character from one of the stories?

Quote:
"Yees," it said. "You're rather stuck, aren't you? Well. You'll need help from the outside – I see you've already got that in place, good man. And you'll need a Queen. A Queen's the only piece that can move freely about the board, d'you see?"

Alice (and Dorcus) could be the help from the outside, which implies that the Queen is already in the mirror. This is probably Hattie, unless Alice (my first thought as Queen, purely because of reading The White Knight so much!) is now in the mirror - we still haven't heard from her have we? Is she in a coma too?

At least it seems that the Mirror people will help M-A if he finds the brothers' names.

I've met them in the same room at the same time so I can confirm neither is fictional Wink

Are you forgetting us as well? We provided him with the knowledge of the card he needed to get next as well as alerting Alice to his predicament, I'd say we're helping Smile

She is the only one in a coma and I don't think there is any doubt that Hattie is to be the queen - which explains why we haven't found out anything about her since she has been in the mirror. I was expecting an appearance from Slice at some point though to be honest.

So, do we write more stories to tell THM that Hattie is his queen and Tweedledum and Tweedledee are the brothers real names? Or do we tell Alice that this is what he needs to know....?

Well I think we go back to what's been said ages ago. If Dee has a brother the chances are his name is Dum.
It's maybe too obvious that the real names are TweedleDee and TweedleDum, so perhaps we should search the stories or the new web-pages for clues as to someone called Dum.

EDIT: there is a website on Google Search simply called Tweedle. It doesn't appear live yet and there's no cached results. It may be nothing... or everything.
http://www.tweedle.co.uk/
I'll keep checking it for a while.

tried googling "Nasser-Yamamoto" got links to this thread, and http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/, One thread of which gives all the competition answers and made me mad, like all my hard (yet enjoyable!) work discovering the stories and having fun was being cheated somehow....

Anyway has anyone seen the submission form for the competition? or is there going to be a seventh question, just for us? Very Happy

There is no submission form... the entry method is described in the competition rules.

And as for the forum, and their stupid competition spoiler... I've thrown in a red herring... worth a try... any one else feel free to join in, the more confusion the better!

tweedle.co.uk

The domain was registered in 2005, so I don't think it's relevant here. You can use the whois form on nominet.org.uk to get this sort of information.

It was nothing, but this site seems altogether more hopeful...

http://www.tweedlepress.com/

EDIT: or maybe not, but I rather like the Peggins cards! I saw that and thought it's too close to Penguins to be coincidence.

One of these days, Alice ...

I hope this isn't just too obvious, but don't we already know the identities of the two brothers? We've been talking about them for some time. One is dead and one is fictional.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(Tweedle) John Dee and (Tweedle) Dr. Doom/Dum

So the real riddle is what is meant by "true names". Right?

yeah, but i'm thinking the true names are tweedledum and dee, and we just figured it out before we had to...After all it hasn't really been relevant before now what their names were, someone (I'm afraid I can't remember who Confused ) was just thinking around the story and joined the dots, and once it was thought of it seemed obvious Very Happy

dr doom was given us by dorcus, so I doubt that's his 'true' name, and john dee was quite plain to see once we looked for a magic mirror...especially since the caterpillar seems to assume we know him as john dee already by throwing 'one who's been dead for 400 years' when talking of the brothers.

Thanks for the roundup doublecross! it gets a bit annoying crawling through loads of links every time you want to check something Smile

Perhaps from the caterpillar's point of view, the true names are the Alice story names, TweedleDum and TweedleDee.
