It increments on every page load, and doesn't seem to mind what the page is (I've tried /test.html /work.html /string.html /blue.html /honey.html). I'm suspecting it's a timestamp of some sort.

It's also an actual 403 error, so I think the chances of the reference number actually meaning something are slim.

That's no guarantee; in .NET I can set any error code I want, even ones that don't really exist, and still return page content irrespective of the error.

I disagree. At the very least, one portion of it is incremental. Which could be a tracker of visitors.

You can code the website to return whatever you want. While most times you'd want the same message for 403, you could just as easily reference a page which displays different information to each person.

I should have said "the chances that the reference number means something in terms of gameplay." However, I've been known to be wrong once or twice - please investigate away!

I'm new to this, but I got a box ...

Ok, so I got a box. I'll post pictures & details soon.

One question: are we sure the numbers on the photos aren't just reference numbers for those photos in the Olympic Museum Collection? Hate for us to burn too much on a red herring -- any way to find this out?

Also just tossing this into the mix ... I was included because answered an invitation Jane McG posted on Twitter:
http://twitter.com/avantgame
specifically here: http://twitter.com/avantgame/statuses/750501942

She posted it seven days ago, and it said this: "who wants a rabbit hole? if you have time to play the best ARG ever email me a physical mailing address ASAP. jane @ avantgame dot com"

(it's a public post in her twitter page, so it should be ok for me to quote that here).

On Feb 23 she posted this " making secret things for you"

Don't know if this helps or not, but I didn't see mention of it yet on the forums. I'm going to check out the wiki now ... would it make sense to post my pics here or just on the wiki?

I'll go ahead and add some of the info here:
My location: Phoenixville, PA (basically, Philadelphia)
Message on Box: "Curiouser and curiouser ... 03.03.08"
Message in string: Same as others on the URL side, and "You will soon demonstrate great cleverness." on the other side.
String color: light green and white
Poster: same as others -- the 1920 Olympics
Address on box: T.L. Ring, 1020 Olympic Way , San Francisco, CA 94110
Pictures & Messages:

Picture 1.
Message: "March 3, 2008 Find her ..."
Image: Stadion front
Number: RAAIM057

Picture 2.
Message: "March 4, 2008?? Find the others ... "; "March 5, 2008?? Find him ..."; "March 11, 2008?? Find the secret..."
Image: Empty stadium, with woman in white in bottom right corner
Number: RAAIM072

Picture 3:
Message: "August 24, 2008 Save the world."
Image: Stadium full of people (or, from what I can tell, all men, looking at photographer)
Number: XAALN032 [EDITED TO CORRECT -- I had M instead of N]

There you go Smile

ok i'm totally fascinated by this one. I'm on board to follow along. I doubt if I'll get a box, as I haven't ever given my address to anyone...

As it stands right now, the only bit of input I can provide is a little more insight into the colour of the olympic rings... I remember reading when I was a kid, that the colours of the olympic rings represent the five colours that appear most frequently on all the flags of the world. Not sure if that's helpful or not, but it's a little more backstory I guess...

So at this point, is anyone trying anything with the codes from the photos at all? I'm a little confused as to how those codes are appearing... can someone describe them further? Like, are they handwritten on the back of the photos, or is it printed, etc? Can someone please post some close-up photos of the codes? I think that may help in determining if they are relevant or not.

I'll scan mine in a mo' so you can see what some of them look like.

On my pictures, the codes on the bottom of the card is... Not part of the picture but part of the printing of the picture... If you know what I mean.

It's similar to how you see copyright notices on printed things. I believe, but have not had time to confirm, that the code is the image's ID number for the organization that archived them. If we can find a way to access that database, we might be able to get more information about the image itself. (Who took it, where, when, etc.)

so could the colours of the 'clews' as received be the colours of the flag of a country?

Of minor interest -

(and addlepated would know this is she had gone to Michaels for yarn instead of stealing this one for her daughter)

The yarn is Lily brand "Sugar n' Cream" yarn. Available in lots of multicolor skeins (like we are receiving) and solid colors. 100% cotton. May not be a lot more to it than that, but I would note that the colors are actually numbered and have names. Could they use numbers they can't control for a game code? My white/beige/baby blue mix is Wesport, color number 02012.

And BTW, when they removed the skein label to anonymize them you lost a free knitting pattern on the back of the label!

i love the idea of this tyiing into Jane McGonigal's "alter your reality" project... and I love the idea of this tying in to eTech... i'm going to do some digging into eTech to see if there's anything relevant there...

I'm also going to dig into the photo codes too... at the moment I don't think they're relevant though...

I don't know, but that site www.ilikestring.com strikes me as odd, in the sense that it could be from an IG character. Seeing those pictures in that site gave me the sensation that later on in the game all those who received the packages are suppose to knitt something.

There were 29 countries in the 1920 Olympics. Have we had 29 boxes show up? I would think there would be conflicts with that. How would we know US from UK from France from Netherlands from Norway (all of them are red, white and blue)... or Japan from Denmark from Monaco from Switzerland (all red and white).

but here's an interesting couple of facts

Quote:

Though this year was the first that the official Olympic flag was flown, not many were there to see it. The number of spectators was so low - mainly because people could not afford tickets after the war - that Belgium lost over 600 million francs from hosting the Games.

More than 2,500 athletes competed, representing 29 countries.

this is also really cool... on the olympic museum site, read how they describe the musem.... tell me it doesn't sound like a description of an ARG too... crazy cool connection...

there's two pages to look at... this is from the first one, found here...

http://www.olympic.org/uk/passion/museum/index_uk.asp

"It all begins with a paradox. It is (almost) invisible and yet, once seen, it is never forgotten. Better still, it draws one back, simply because its incredible diversity cannot be assimilated in one go.

Such is the Olympic Museum Lausanne that we invite you to discover during a virtual tour."

The second one is from here, which is a link to the virtual tour of the museum. http://www.olympic.org/uk/passion/museum/virtual/index_uk.asp

"AN ARCHITECTURAL SUCCESS

The best proof that the Olympic Museum is a true architectural success is the fact that you cannot see it. When approaching visitors ascend through the park from the shores of Lake Geneva, the museum is only gradually revealed one floor at a time."

again, honestly, I doubt it has any specific in-game relevance, but if ever there was a building that sounded like an ARG... it's this place!!!
